AMOS:  CHAPTER 1

AMOS:  CHAPTER 1

The words of Amos, who was among the herdsmen of Tekoa, which he saw in visions concerning Israel in the days of Uzziyeh king of Yehudah, and in the days of Jeroboam son of Yehash, king of Israel; two years before the earthquake:
2 He said, “YEHOWAH roars from Zion and utters His voice from Jerusalem, and the pastures of the shepherds mourn, and the summit of Carmel dries up.”
3 Thus says YEHOWAH, “For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn back, because they have trampled Gilead with sharp instruments of iron.
4 So I will send fire upon the house of Hazael, which will consume the castles of Ben-hadad.
5 I will also break the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the valley of Aven, and him who holds the scepter, from Beth-eden; so the people of Syria will go exiled to Kir,” says YEHOWAH.
6 Thus says YEHOWAH, “For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn back, because they exiled all in captivity, to deliver them to Edom.
7 So I will send fire upon the wall of Gaza, which will consume her castles.
8 And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him who holds the scepter from Ashkelon.  I will even turn My hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines will perish,” says Adonay, YEHOWAH.
9 Thus says YEHOWAH, “For three transgressions of Tyre, and for four, I will not turn back, because they delivered up all in captivity to Edom and remembered not the covenant of brotherhood.
10 So I will send fire upon the wall of Tyre, which will consume her castles.”
11 Thus says YEHOWAH, “For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn back, because he pursued his brother with the sword, while he cast off all compassion; his anger tore perpetually, and he kept his anger forever.
12 So I will send fire upon Teman, which will consume the castles of Bozrah.”
13 Thus says YEHOWAH, “For three transgressions of the sons of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn back, because they ripped open the women with child in Gilead, in order to enlarge their borders.
14 So I will kindle a fire on the wall of Rabbah, which will consume her castles, with shouting in the day of battle, and a storm on the day of tempest.
15 Their king will go into exile, he and his princes together,” says YEHOWAH.

AMOS:  CHAPTER 2

AMOS:  CHAPTER 2

Thus says YEHOWAH, “For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn back, because he burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime.
2 So I will send fire upon Moab, which will consume the castles of Kerioth, and Moab will die in tumult, with shouting and the sound of a trumpet.
3 I will also cut off the judge from her midst and slay all her princes with him,” says YEHOWAH.
4 Thus says YEHOWAH, “For three transgressions of Yehudah, and for four, I will not turn back, because they have despised the law of YEHOWAH and have not kept His commandments.  And their lies have caused them to err, after which their fathers walked.
5 So I will send fire upon Yehudah, which will consume the castles of Jerusalem.”
6 Thus says YEHOWAH, “For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn back, because they sell the righteous for silver and the beggar for a pair of shoes.
7 Panting after the dust of the earth on the head of the weak, they pervert the way of the humble, and a man and his father go in to the same maiden in order to profane My holy Name.
8 And they lay down beside every altar; upon clothes taken as pledges, and in the house of Elohim they drink the wine of those condemned.
9 But I destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of cedars and whose strength was as the oaks, but I destroyed his fruit above and his roots below,
10 and I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.
11 And of your sons I raised up some to be prophets, and some of your young men to be Nazarites.  Is this not so, O sons of Israel?” declares YEHOWAH.
12 “But you gave the Nazarites wine to drink, and you commanded the prophets to speak no more.
13 Behold, I am pressed under you as a wagon is pressed down when filled with sheaves.
14 Therefore, flight will perish from the swift, and the strong will not strengthen their might; nor shall the powerful deliver his soul.
15 Neither will he stand who wields the bow, and the swift of foot will not escape, nor will he who rides the horse save his life.
16 And even the courageous-hearted among the warriors will flee naked in that day,” says YEHOWAH.

AMOS:  CHAPTER 3

AMOS:  CHAPTER 3

Hear this Word that YEHOWAH has spoken against you, children of Israel; against the entire family that He brought up from the land of Egypt:
2 “You only have I chosen among all the families of the earth, therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.
3 Can two walk together unless they have made an agreement?
4 Will a lion roar in the forest when they have no prey? Will a young lion cry out from its den unless it has a capture?
5 Can a bird be ensnared in a trap on the ground when there is no noose? Will a snare spring up from the earth when it captures nothing at all?
6 Shall a trumpet be blown in a city and the people not tremble? If evil occurs in a city, has not YEHOWAH done it?
7 Surely Adonay YEHOWAH does nothing unless He reveals His secret counsel to His servants the prophets.
8 The lion has roared, who will not be afraid? Adonay YEHOWAH has spoken, who can but prophesy?
9 Proclaim in the castles in Ashdod, and in the castles in the land of Egypt, saying, ‘Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria and see the great confusion in their midst, and the oppression in their midst.’
10 They do not know how to do what is right,” declares YEHOWAH.  “They store up violence and desolation in their castles.”
11 Therefore, thus says Adonay YEHOWAH, “An adversary; even one surrounding the land, will subdue your strength and will plunder your castles.”
12 Thus says YEHOWAH, “As a shepherd snatches two legs, or a piece of an ear from the lion’s mouth, so shall the children of Israel be rescued from the corner of a bed in Samaria, and from a couch in Damascus!
13 Hear you, and testify against the house of Jacob,” says Adonay YEHOWAH, the Elohim of hosts,
14 “In the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon it, I will also visit the altars of Bethel, and the horns of the altar will be cut off, and they will fall to the ground,
15 and I will strike the winter house and the summer house; and the houses of ivory will perish, and the great houses will come to an end,” says YEHOWAH.

AMOS:  CHAPTER 4

AMOS:  CHAPTER 4

Hear this Word, you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria; who oppress the poor; who crush the needy; who say to your lords, “Come, and let us drink!”
2 Adonay YEHOWAH has sworn by His holiness, “Behold, days are coming upon you, when you will be taken away with meat hooks, and your remnant with fish hooks,
3 and you will go out the breaches, each one straight before her, and you will be cast out of the castle,” declares YEHOWAH.
4 “Come to Bethel and transgress.  At Gilgal multiply transgression, and bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes every three years,
5 and offer a thank offering also with leaven, and publish and proclaim your freewill offerings, for this you love, you children of Israel,” declares Adonay, YEHOWAH.
6 “But I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and the want of bread in all your homes, yet you have not returned to Me,” declares YEHOWAH.
7 “And I also have withheld the rain from you, yet three months from harvest, causing rain on one city, while on another city I would not send rain.  One part would be rained on, while the part not rained on would dry up.
8 So two or three cities would wander to one city to drink water, but would not be satisfied.  Yet you have not returned to Me,” declares YEHOWAH.
9 “I have struck you with blight and mildew, and the locust has devoured the increase of your gardens, vineyards, fig trees and olive trees, yet you have not returned to Me,” declares YEHOWAH.
10 “I have sent among you pestilence after the manner of Egypt.  Your young men have I slain with the sword.  I have taken away captive your horses, and I have made the stench of your camp rise up in your nostrils.  Yet you have not returned to Me,” declares YEHOWAH.
11 “I have overthrown you, as Elohim overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a firebrand snatched out from the burning, yet you have not returned to Me,” declares YEHOWAH.
12 “Therefore, thus I will do unto you, O Israel, and because I will do this unto you, prepare to meet your Elohim, O Israel.
13 For behold, He Who forms the mountains and creates the wind, and declares unto man what is His thought; Who makes the morning into darkness and treads on the high places of the earth, YEHOWAH Elohim of hosts is His Name.

AMOS:  CHAPTER 5

AMOS:  CHAPTER 5

Hear this Word, which I take up for you as a dirge, O house of Israel:
2 “The virgin of Israel has fallen; she shall rise up no more .  She is forsaken on her land, with none to raise her up.”
3 For thus says the Adonay YEHOWAH, “The city that goes forth with a thousand, will have a remnant of one hundred, and the one that sends out a hundred will have ten remaining to the house of Israel.”
4 For thus says YEHOWAH to the house of Israel, “Seek Me and live!
5 But seek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, nor cross over to Beersheba, for Gilgal will certainly go into exile and Bethel will come to naught.
6 Seek YEHOWAH and you will live, lest He break forth like a fire in the house of Yehseph and devour it; and there be none to quench in Bethel,
7 for you have turned justice into wormwood, and cast righteousness down to the earth.
8 Seek He Who made Pleiades and Orion and turned the shadow of death into the break of day; Who also turns day to night; Who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the surface of the earth, YEHOWAH is His name:
9 He strengthens the oppressed against the mighty, so that the oppressed comes forth upon the fortress.
10 But you hate those who rebuke in the gate, and abhor those who speak uprightly.
11 Therefore, because you trample the poor, and take from them tributes of grain, while you built for yourself houses of well-hewn stone; you will not dwell in them, and though you have planted pleasant vineyards, you will not drink of their wine.
12 For I know your abundant transgressions and your mighty sins.  You afflict the righteous, accept bribes and turn aside the poor in the gate.
13 Therefore, the wise shall keep silent at that time, for it is an evil time.
14 Seek good and not evil, that you may live, and thus may YEHOWAH, Elohim of hosts be with you, just as you have said!
15 Hate evil, love good and establish justice in the gate!  It may be that YEHOWAH, Elohim of hosts may be gracious to the remnant of Yehseph.
16 Therefore,” thus says YEHOWAH, Elohim of hosts, Adonay, “There is wailing in all the broad places, and in all the highways they say, ‘Alas! Alas!  And they shall call the farmer to mourning, and those skillful in lamentation to wailing,
17 and in all the vineyards shall be wailing, because I will pass through the midst of you,” says YEHOWAH.
18 “Woe unto you who desire the day of YEHOWAH!  To what end is the day of YEHOWAH for you? For it will be darkness and not light;
19 as when a person flees from a lion and a bear meets them, or goes into the house, leans their hand against the wall, and a serpent bites them.
20 The day of YEHOWAH will be darkness and not light; deep darkness with no brightness in it.
21 I hate; I reject your feast days!  Nor do I delight in your solemn assemblies.
22 Though you offer burnt offerings and bloodless offerings unto Me, I will not accept them, nor will I regard the peace offerings of your fattened beasts.
23 Take away from Me the noise of your songs.  I will not her the sound of your lyre.
24 But let justice roll down like water and righteousness like a mighty river.
25 Did you offer unto Me sacrifices and grain offerings in the wilderness for forty years, O house of Israel,
26 while you also carried along the tabernacle of Molech and the image of Chiun; the star of your elohim, which you made for yourselves.
27 Therefore, I will make you go into exile beyond Damascus,” says YEHOWAH, Whose Name is Elohim of hosts.

AMOS:  CHAPTER 6

AMOS:  CHAPTER 6

Woe to those who are at ease in Zion; who are secure in the mountains of Samaria; the designated leaders of the nations, to whom the house of Israel comes.
2 Pass over to Calneh and see, and from there go to Hamath the great; then go down to Gath of the Philistines.  Are they better than these kingdoms, or is their territory greater than yours?
3 You that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near;
4 who lie upon beds of ivory and stretch out on couches, and eat lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall,
5 and chant to the sound of the lyre, and contrive songs for themselves, like David,
6 and who drink wine from sacrificial bowls, and anoint yourselves with the finest of oils, but have not grieved over the destruction of Yehseph;
7 therefore now you will go into exile, among the first of the exiles, and the banquet of those stretched out will pass away.
8 Adonay, YEHOWAH, has sworn by Himself, YEHOWAH Elohim of hosts has said, “I loathe the arrogance of Jacob, and hate his castles.  Therefore I will deliver up the city with all that is therein,”
9 and it shall come to pass, if ten men remain in one house, they will die,
10 and a man’s uncle, and he that should burn him, will lift him up to carry his bones from the house, and will say to one who is in the innermost part of the house, “Is anyone else with you?” And that one will say, “No one.” And he will answer, “Remain silent, for we may not mention the Name of YEHOWAH,”
11 for behold; YEHOWAH commands that the great house be smashed and the small house be fragmented.
12 Shall horses run upon the rocks? Or does one plow them with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into poison, and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood;
13 and you who rejoice in Lo Debar, say, “Have we not by our strength taken Karnaim?”
14 “But behold, I am going to raise up a nation against you, O house of Israel,” declares YEHOWAH, Elohim of hosts,” and they will afflict you from the entrance of Hamath to the torrent of the Arabah.”

AMOS:  CHAPTER 7

AMOS:  CHAPTER 7

Thus Adonay YEHOWAH showed me, and behold, He formed a locust-swarm in the beginning of the shooting forth of the latter growth.  And behold, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowing.
2 And it came to pass, when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, that I said, “O Adonay YEHOWAH, forgive me please!  By whom shall Jacob stand, for he is small?”
3 And YEHOWAH relented of this: “It shall not be,” says YEHOWAH.
4 Then Adonay YEHOWAH showed me, and behold; Adonay, YEHOWAH called to contend by fire, and it consumed the great deep and consumed part of the inheritance,
5 and I said, “Oh, Adonay YEHOWAH, please cease! How can Jacob stand, for he is small?”
6 And YEHOWAH relented of this.  “This too shall not be,” said Adonay YEHOWAH.
7 Then He showed me, and behold, Adonay stood upon a wall made with a plumb line; with a plumb line in His hand,
8 and YEHOWAH said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then Adonay said, “Behold I will set a plumb line in the midst of My people Israel, and I will not again pass by them any more.
9 The high places of Isaac will be desolated and the sanctuaries of Israel will be laid waste, and I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”
10 Then Amaziyeh, the priest of Bethel, sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel.  The land is unable to endure all his words.
11 For thus Amos says, ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will certainly be exiled from its land.'”
12 And Amaziyeh said to Amos, “Go, you seer, flee away to the land of Yehudah and there eat bread, and prophesy there,
13 but prophesy not again any more at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary and the king’s court.”
14 And Amos answered and said to Amaziyeh, “I was no prophet, nor am I the son of a prophet, for I am a herdsman and a gatherer of sycamore figs.
15 But YEHOWAH took me from following the flock, and YEHOWAH said to me, ‘Go, prophesy unto My people Israel.'”
16 Therefore, hear the Word of YEHOWAH: “You are saying, ‘You shall not prophesy against Israel, nor shall you speak against the house of Isaac.’
17 Therefore,” thus says YEHOWAH, “Your wife will be a whore in the city, your sons and your daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be divided by a line, and you yourself will die in a land that is unclean.  And Israel will surely go from its land into exile.”

AMOS:  CHAPTER 8

AMOS:  CHAPTER 8

Then Adonay, YEHOWAH, showed me, and behold, a basket of summer fruit.
2 And He said, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.”  Then YEHOWAH said to me, “The end has come for My people Israel.  I will not again pass by them anymore.
3 The songs of the temple will turn to howling in that day,” declares Adonay YEHOWAH. “Many dead bodies; everywhere!  They shall cast them out in silence.
4 Hear this, you who swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail,
5 saying, ‘When will the new moon be gone, so that we may sell grain; and the Sabbath, that we may set forth the corn, making the ephah small and the shekel great; and to falsify with deceitful scales,
6 that we may buy the weak for money and the needy for a pair of shoes, and sell the chaff of the wheat?’
7 YEHOWAH has sworn by the pride of Jacob, ‘Surely, I will never forget any of their deeds.
8 Shall not the land tremble for this, and all who dwell in it mourn? It will rise up like the Nile, and it will cast up and sink down like the Nile of Egypt.
9 And it will come to pass in that day,” declares Adonay YEHOWAH, “That I will make the sun go down at noon, and make the earth dark in the fullness of day.
10 And I will turn all your festivals into mourning, and your songs into lamentations; and I will bring sackcloth upon everyone’s loins, and baldness upon every head.  And I will make it as mourning for an only son; and the end of it will be as a bitter day.
11 Behold, days are coming,” declares Adonay YEHOWAH, “When I will send a famine on the land.  Not a famine for bread, or a thirst for water, but rather for hearing the Word of YEHOWAH.
12 They will stagger from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east; they will go to and fro to seek the Word of YEHOWAH, but they will not find it.
13 In that day the beautiful virgins and the young men will faint from thirst,
14 and they who swear by the sin of Samaria, who say, ‘As your elohim lives, O Dan,’ and, ‘As the way of Beer Sheba lives,’ even they will fall and not rise up again.”

AMOS:  CHAPTER 9

AMOS:  CHAPTER 9

I saw Adonay standing above the altar, and He said, “Strike the capitals so that the thresholds will shake, and cut them in the head; all of them!  And I will slay the remainder of them with the sword; there will not be a fugitive who will flee, or a refugee who will escape.
2 Though they dig into hell, from there My hand will take them, and though they ascend into the heavens, from there will I bring them down.
3 Though they hide on the summit of Carmel, I will search them out and take them from there, and though they conceal themselves from My sight on the bottom of the sea, from there I will command the serpent and it will bite them.
4 And though they go into captivity before their enemies, from there I will command the sword, and it will slay them, and I will set My eyes against them for evil and not for good.”
5 Adonay, YEHOWAH of hosts, is He Who touches the land so that it melts, and all those who dwell in it shall mourn, and all of it shall rise up like the Nile and sink down like the Nile of Egypt;
6 He Who builds His upper chambers in the heavens, and has established His vault upon the earth; He Who calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out on the face of the earth; YEHOWAH is His name.
7 “Are you not as the children of Ethiopia to Me, O sons of Israel?” declares YEHOWAH. “Have I not brought up Israel from the land of Egypt; the Philistines from Caphtor, and Syria from Kir?
8 Behold, the eyes of Adonay YEHOWAH, are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth; only I will not totally destroy the house of Jacob,” says YEHOWAH.
9 For behold, I command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations as grain is shaken through a sieve, but not the least grain will fall to the ground.
10 All the sinners of My people will die by the sword; those who say, ‘The calamity will not overtake or fall upon us.’
11 In that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof, and I will raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old;
12 that they may possess the remnant of Edom, and all the nations upon whom My Name is called,” declares YEHOWAH Who does this.
13 “Behold, days are coming,” declares YEHOWAH, “when the plowman will overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes those who sow the seed; when the mountains will drip sweet wine, and all the hills will melt away.
14 And I will restore the prosperity of My people Israel, and they will rebuild the ruined cities and live therein; they will also plant vineyards and drink their wine, and make gardens and eat their fruit.
15 And I will plant them upon their land, and they will not again be rooted out from their land, which I have given them,” says YEHOWAH Elohim.
