GENESIS:  CHAPTER 1

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 1

In the beginning, Elohim created the heavens and the earth.
2 And the earth was empty; void.  And darkness was over the face of the deep, and The Spirit of Elohim was moving over the face of the waters.
3 Then Elohim said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
4 And Elohim saw the light was good, and Elohim divided the light from the darkness.
5 And Elohim called the light day, and the darkness He called night.  And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
6 Then Elohim said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.”
7 And Elohim made the expanse, and divided the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse; and it was so.
8 And Elohim called the expanse heaven.  And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.
9 Then Elohim said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so.
10 And Elohim called the dry land earth, and the gathering of the waters He called seas; and Elohim saw that it was good.
11 Then Elohim said, “Let the earth bring forth herbs, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit after their kind, with seed in them”; and it was so.
12 And the earth brought forth herbs and plants yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them after their kind; and Elohim saw that it was good.
13 And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.
14 Then Elohim said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to divide the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years;
15 and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens, to give light on the earth”; and it was so.
16 And Elohim made the two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; the stars also.
17 And Elohim set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth;
18 to rule the day and the night, and to divide the light from the darkness, and Elohim saw that it was good.
19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.
20 Then Elohim said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the heavens.”
21 And Elohim created great whales and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and Elohim saw that it was good.
22 And Elohim blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”
23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.
24 Then Elohim said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind:  Cattle and creeping things, and beasts of the earth after their kind”; and it was so.
25 And Elohim made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and Elohim saw that it was good.
26 Then Elohim said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27 And Elohim created man in His image; in the image of Elohim He created him; male and female He created them.
28 And Elohim blessed them, and Elohim said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
29 And Elohim said, “Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree that has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you.
30 And every beast of the earth, and every bird of the sky, and every thing that creeps on the earth that has life, and every green plant for food”, and it was so.
31 And Elohim saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good, and there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 2

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 2

Thus the heavens and the earth, and all their hosts, were finished.
2 And by the seventh day Elohim finished His work that He had made, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work that He had made.
3 Then Elohim blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work that Elohim had created and made.
4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created; in the time that YEHOWAH Elohim made the earth and heaven,
5 and every shrub of the field, and every herb of the field, before they had sprouted, for YEHOWAH Elohim had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to till the ground.
6 But a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
7 Then YEHOWAH Elohim formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living breathing being.
8 And YEHOWAH Elohim planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed.
9 And out of the ground YEHOWAH Elohim made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden; and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 And a river flowed from Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four heads.
11 The name of the first is Pishon, which flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
12 And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and the onyx stone are also there.
13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it flows around the whole land of Cush.
14 And the name of the third river is Tigris, it flows east of Assyria.  And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 Then YEHOWAH Elohim took the man and put him into the Garden of Eden to till it and tend it.
16 And YEHOWAH Elohim commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree from the garden you may freely eat,
17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
18 Then YEHOWAH Elohim said, “It is not good for the man to be alone.  I will make a suitable helpmate for him.”
19 And out of the ground YEHOWAH Elohim formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them.  And whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.
20 The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the heavens, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a suitable helpmate for him.
21 So YEHOWAH Elohim caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place.
22 And YEHOWAH Elohim made into a woman the rib that He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.
23 And the man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of man.
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.”
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 3

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 3

Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field that YEHOWAH Elohim had made.  And he said to the woman, “Surely, has Elohim said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden?'”
2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden,
3 but from the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, Elohim has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.'”
4 The serpent said to the woman, “Surely, you will not die!
5 For Elohim knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened and you will be like Elohim, knowing good and evil.”
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and that the tree was coveted to make wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made for themselves aprons.
8 And they heard the voice of YEHOWAH Elohim walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of YEHOWAH Elohim among the trees of the garden.
9 And YEHOWAH Elohim called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”
10 And he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.”
11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
12 And the man said, “The woman whom You gave me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.”
13 Then YEHOWAH Elohim said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
14 And YEHOWAH Elohim said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field.  On your belly you will go, and dust you will eat all the days of your life,
15 and I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
16 To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth.  In pain you will bring forth children.  Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
17 And to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; cursed be the ground because of you.  In toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.
18 Thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and you will eat the herbs of the field.
19 In the sweat of your face you will eat bread, till you return to the ground; for from it you were taken.  For you are dust, and unto dust you shall return.”
20 Now the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
21 And YEHOWAH Elohim made coats of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.
22 And YEHOWAH Elohim said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil.  And now, lest he stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever…”
23 Therefore, YEHOWAH Elohim sent him away from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken.
24 And He drove out the man.  And at the east of the Garden of Eden He set cherubim, and the flaming sword that turns every direction, to guard the way to the tree of life.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 4

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 4

And the man knew his wife Eve, and she conceived and begat Cain, and she said, “I have acquired a man child from YEHOWAH.”
2 And again, she begat his brother Abel.  And Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
3 And it came to pass in the course of time that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground unto YEHOWAH.
4 And Abel also brought of the first-lings of his flock; the choicest part thereof.  And YEHOWAH had regard for Abel and for his offering,
5 but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard.  And Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell.
6 And YEHOWAH said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?
7 If you do well, will you not be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin crouches at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.”
8 And Cain spoke with Abel his brother.  And it came to pass when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
9 Then YEHOWAH said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I know not. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
10 And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying unto Me from the ground.
11 And now be cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
12 When you till the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; you will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”
13 And Cain said to YEHOWAH, “My punishment is too great to bear!
14 Behold, You have driven me this day from the face of the ground, and from Your Face I will be hidden.  And I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
15 And YEHOWAH said to him, “Therefore, whoever kills Cain, it shall be revenged upon him sevenfold.”  And YEHOWAH put a mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him would slay him.
16 Then Cain went out from the presence of YEHOWAH, and settled in the land of Nod; toward the east of Eden.
17 And Cain knew his wife and she conceived, and begat Enoch; and he built a city, and he called the name of the city after the name of his son Enoch.
18 Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad begat Mehujael, and Mehujael begat Methushael, and Methushael begat Lamech.
19 And Lamech took to himself two wives:  The name of one was Adah, and the name of the second, Zillah.
20 And Adah begat Jabal;  He was the father of those who dwell in tents and breed cattle.
21 His brother’s name was Jubal; and he was the father of all those who play the harp and organ.
22 And Zillah also begat Tubal-Cain, the forger of all tools of bronze and iron.  And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.
23 And Lamech said to his wives, Adah and Zillah, “Hear my voice, you wives of Lamech; give heed to my speech, for I have slain a man for wounding me, and a young man for bruising me.
24 If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy and seven fold.”
25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she begat a son, and called his name Seth, saying, “Elohim has appointed me another seed in place of Abel, whom Cain slew.”
26 And to Seth, to him also was born a son, and he called his name Enosh.  Then men began to call upon the Name of YEHOWAH.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 5

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 5

This is the book of the generations of Adam:  In the day when Elohim created man, He made him in the likeness of Elohim.
2 Male and female created He them, and He blessed them, and called their name, “Man” in the day when they were created.
3 And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image, and called his name Seth.
4 Then the days of Adam, after he had begotten Seth, were eight hundred years, and he begat sons and daughters.
5 So, all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.
6 Seth lived one hundred and five years, and begat Enosh.
7 And Seth lived eight hundred and seven years after he begat Enosh, and begat sons and daughters.
8 So, all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years; and he died.
9 Enosh lived ninety years, and begat Cainan.
10 And Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years after he begat Cainan, and he begat sons and daughters.
11 So, all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years; and he died.
12 Cainan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalalel.
13 And Cainan lived eight hundred and forty years after he begat Mahalalel, and he begat sons and daughters.
14 So, all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years; and he died.
15 Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and begat Jared.
16 And Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years after he begat Jared, and he begat sons and daughters.
17 So, all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years; and he died.
18 Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and begat Enoch.
19 And Jared lived eight hundred years after he begat Enoch, and he begat sons and daughters.
20 So, all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years; and he died.
21 Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begat Methuselah.
22 And Enoch walked with Elohim three hundred years after he begat Methuselah, and he begat sons and daughters.
23 So, all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years.
24 And Enoch walked with Elohim; and he was not, for Elohim took him.
25 Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and begat Lamech.
26 And Methuselah lived seven hundred and eighty-two years after he begat Lamech, and he begat sons and daughters.
27 So, all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years; and he died.
28 Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and begat a son.
29 And he called his name Noah, saying, “He shall comfort us from our work and from the toil of our hands; from the ground that YEHOWAH has cursed.”
30 And Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years after he begat Noah, and he begat sons and daughters.
31 So, all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years; and he died.
32 Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 6

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 6

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them,
2 that the sons of Elohim saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and took themselves wives of all that they chose.
3 And YEHOWAH said, “My Spirit shall not stay this course with man eternally, for indeed he is also flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”
4 And in those days there were giants on the earth, and also afterward, when the sons of Elohim came in to the daughters of men, and begat young to them.  These were the valiant men of old; men of renown.
5 And YEHOWAH saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6 And YEHOWAH repented that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him in His heart.
7 And YEHOWAH said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land; from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the heavens, for I repent that I have made them.”
8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of YEHOWAH.
9 These are the generations of Noah:  Noah was a righteous man, perfect in his generation; Noah walked with Elohim.
10 And Noah begat three sons:  Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11 And the earth was corrupt before Elohim, and the earth was filled with violence.
12 And Elohim looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.
13 And Elohim said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is full of violence because of them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
14 Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; with rooms you shall make the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch.
15 And this is how you shall make it:  The length of the ark three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.
16 A window shall you make for the ark, and finish it a cubit from the top, and the door of the ark shall you set in its side; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks.
17 And behold, I, even I will bring a flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall die.
18 But with you I will establish My covenant, and you shall enter the ark; you and your sons and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.
19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort you shall bring into the ark, to keep alive with you; they shall be male and female.
20 Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind; two of each will come to you to keep alive.
21 And take of all food that is eaten, and gather it to yourself, and it shall be for food for you and for them.”
22 Thus Noah did according to all that Elohim had commanded him; so he did.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 7

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 7

Then YEHOWAH said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for you I have seen righteous before Me in this time.
2 For every clean beast you shall take by sevens, the male and his female; but of the beasts that are not clean, two, a male and his female;
3 also of the birds of the sky, by sevens, male and female, to keep seed alive on the face of all the earth.
4 For in seven days I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy from the face of the land every living thing that I have made.”
5 And Noah did according to all that YEHOWAH had commanded him.
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of water came upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him into the ark, because of the water of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts and beasts that are not clean, and birds and everything that creeps on the ground,
9 there came into the ark two by two unto Noah, male and female, as Elohim had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the water of the flood came upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day all the fountains of the great deep broke forth, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain broke forth upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.
13 On the very day Noah and Shem and Ham and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, came into the ark;
14 they and every beast after its kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every fowl after its kind; every bird of every sort.
15 And they went into the ark to Noah by twos of all flesh in which was the breath of life.
16 And they went in; male and female of all flesh went in, as Elohim had commanded him; and YEHOWAH shut him in.
17 And the deluge came upon the earth for forty days, and the water increased and lifted up the ark, so that it was lifted above the earth.
18 And the water prevailed and increased greatly upon the earth, and the ark floated on the face of the water.
19 And the water prevailed exceedingly upon the earth, so that all the high mountains everywhere under the heavens were covered.
20 And the water prevailed fifteen cubits higher, and the mountains were covered.
21 And all flesh that moved on the earth died; birds and cattle and beasts and every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth, and all mankind.
22 Everything that was on the dry land, in whose nostrils was the breath of The Spirit of Life, died.
23 And every living thing that was upon the face of the ground was destroyed; from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky were destroyed from the earth. And only Noah remained, together with those that were with him in the ark.
24 And the water prevailed upon the earth one hundred and fifty days.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 8

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 8

And Elohim remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark, and Elohim caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided.
2 And the fountains of the great deep and the windows of heaven were closed, and the rain from the sky was restrained.
3 And the water retreated steadily from the earth, and at the end of one hundred and fifty days the water abated.
4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat.
5 The water abated steadily until the tenth month, when on the first day of the tenth month, the tops of the mountains became visible.
6 And it came to pass at the end of forty days that Noah opened the window that he had made in the ark,
7 and he sent forth a raven, and it flew here and there until the water was dried up from the earth.
8 And he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the water had abated from the face of the land,
9 but the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, so she returned to him into the ark, for the water was on the face of the whole earth.  Then he put out his hand and took her, and brought her into the ark to himself.
10 And he waited yet another seven days, and again he sent forth the dove from the ark.
11 And the dove came to him in the evening time, and behold, in her beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf.  So Noah knew that the water was abated from the earth.
12 And he waited yet another seven days, and sent out the dove, but she returned to him no more.
13 And it came to pass in the six hundred and first year, on the first day of the first month, the water was dried up from the earth.  And Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and behold, the surface of the ground was dry.
14 And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry.
15 And Elohim spoke to Noah, saying,
16 “Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and your sons’ wives with you.
17 Bring forth with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you; fowl and beasts and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, that they may breed abundantly on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.”
18 And Noah went forth, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him.
19 And every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl; everything that moves on the earth, went out by their families from the ark.
20 And Noah built an altar to YEHOWAH, and took of every clean animal, and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
21 And YEHOWAH smelled the sweet odor.  And YEHOWAH said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground on account of man, for the imaginings of man’s heart is evil from his youth.  But I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.
22 While the earth remains, seed-time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night, shall not cease.”

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 9

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 9

And Elohim blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.
2 The fear of you, and the dread of you, will be on every beast of the earth and on every fowl of the sky, with everything that creeps on the ground, and all the fish of the sea.  Into your hand they are given.
3 Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; even as the green herb, I have given you all things.
4 Only you shall not eat flesh with its life; its blood.
5 Surely the blood of your life I will require; from every beast I will require it.  And from every man, and from every man’s brother, I will require the life of man.
6 Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man his blood shall be shed, for in the image of Elohim He made man.
7 And you, be fruitful and multiply.  Breed abundantly upon the earth, and multiply on it.”
8 And Elohim spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying,
9 “Behold, I establish My covenant with you, and with your seed after you,
10 and with every living creature that is with you:  the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, of all that has gone out of the ark; every beast of the earth.
11 I establish My covenant with you, that all flesh shall never again be cut off by the water of the flood, neither shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth.”
12 And Elohim said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I am making between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, throughout all generations:
13 I set My bow in the clouds, and it shall be for a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.
14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring clouds over the earth, that the bow will be seen in the clouds,
15 and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the water shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.
16 And the bow shall be in the clouds, and I will look upon it to remember the everlasting covenant between Elohim and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”
17 And Elohim said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
18 Now the sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem and Ham and Japheth; and Ham was the father of Canaan.
19 These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the whole earth was populated.
20 And Noah began caring for the ground and planted a vineyard.
21 And he drank of the wine and became drunk, and uncovered himself in his tent.
22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside.
23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laying it upon their shoulders, walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were turned away, that they saw not their father’s nakedness.
24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and learned what his youngest son had done to him.
25 And he said, “Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be to his brothers.”
26 And he said, “Blessed be YEHOWAH, The Elohim of Shem, and let Canaan be his servant.
27 May Elohim enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be his servant.”
28 And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.
29 And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years; and he died.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 10

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 10

Now these are the generations of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah; and sons were born to them after the flood.
2 The sons of Japheth:  Gomer and Magog and Madai and Javan and Tubal and Meshech and Tiras.
3 The sons of Gomer:  Ashkenaz and Riphath and Togarmah.
4 The sons of Javan:  Elishah and Tarshish, Kittim and Dodanim.
5 By these the countries of the nations were dispersed to their lands; every one according to his language, according to their families, into their nations.
6 The sons of Ham:  Cush and Mizraim and Put and Canaan.
7 The sons of Cush:  Seba and Havilah and Sabtah and Raamah and Sabteca.  And the sons of Raamah:  Sheba and Dedan.
8 And Cush begat Nimrod; and he began to be mighty on the earth.
9 He was a mighty hunter before YEHOWAH, therefore it is said, “As Nimrod, a mighty hunter before YEHOWAH.”
10 The beginning of his kingdom was Babel and Erech and Accad and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
11 From that land he went forth into Asshur and built Nineveh and Rehoboth-Ir and Calah,
12 and Resen, between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city.
13 And Mizraim begat Lud and Anamim and Lehabim and Naphtuhim
14 and Pathrusim and Casluhim (from whom came the Philistines) and Caphtorim.
15 And Canaan begat Sidon; his firstborn, and Heth
16 and the Jebusite and the Amorite and the Girgashite
17 and the Hivite and the Arkite and the Sinite
18 and the Arvadite and the Zemarite and the Hamathite.  And afterward the families of the Canaanite spread abroad.
19 And the borders of the Canaanite extended from Sidon, as one goes to Gerar, as far as Gaza; as one goes to Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zeboim, as far as Lasha.
20 These are the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, by their nations.
21 And to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, children were born.
22 The sons of Shem:  Elam and Asshur and Arphaxad and Lud and Aram.
23 The sons of Aram:  Uz and Hul and Gether and Mash.
24 And Arphaxad begat Shelah, and Shelah begat Eber.
25 And to Eber two sons were born; the name of one, Peleg, for in his days was the earth divided, and his brother’s name, Joktan.
26 And Joktan begat Almodad and Sheleph and Hazarmaveth and Jerah
27 and Hadoram and Uzal and Diklah
28 and Obal and Abimael and Sheba
29 and Ophir and Havilah and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan.
30 And their dwelling was from Mesha as one goes to Sephar; a mountain to the east.
31 These are the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, by their nations.
32 These are the families of the sons of Noah according to their genealogies, by their nations; and out of these the nations were dispersed on the earth after the flood.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 11

And the whole earth used one language and one speech.
2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there.
3 And they said one to another, “Come, let us make bricks and kindle them through burning.”  And they used brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.
4 And they said, “Come, let us build for ourselves a city, with a tower topping in heaven, and let us make for ourselves a name, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
5 And YEHOWAH came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men were building.
6 And YEHOWAH said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have one language, and this they begin to do.  And now nothing they imagine doing will be impossible for them.
7 Come, let Us go down and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”
8 So YEHOWAH scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth, and they stopped building the city.
9 Therefore its name was called Babel, because YEHOWAH confused the language of the whole earth there.  And YEHOWAH scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth.
10 And these are the generations of Shem:  Shem was one hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood,
11 and Shem lived five hundred years after he begat Arphaxad, and he had sons and daughters.
12 Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, and begat Shelah;
13 and Arphaxad lived four hundred and three years after he begat Shelah, and he had sons and daughters.
14 Shelah lived thirty years, and begat Eber;
15 and Shelah lived four hundred and three years after he begat Eber, and he had sons and daughters.
16 Eber lived thirty-four years, and begat Peleg;
17 and Eber lived four hundred and thirty years after he begat Peleg, and he had sons and daughters.
18 Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu;
19 and Peleg lived two hundred and nine years after he begat Reu, and he had sons and daughters.
20 Reu lived thirty-two years, and begat Serug;
21 and Reu lived two hundred and seven years after he begat Serug, and he had sons and daughters.
22 Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor;
23 and Serug lived two hundred years after he begat Nahor, and he had sons and daughters.
24 Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begat Terah;
25 and Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after he begat Terah, and he had sons and daughters.
26 Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor and Haran.
27 And these are the generations of Terah:  Terah begat Abram, Nahor and Haran, and Haran begat Lot.
28 And Haran died before the face of his father Terah in the land of his birth; in Ur of the Chaldeans.
29 And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves.  The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, a daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.
30 And Sarai was barren; she had no child.
31 Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his sons’ son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law; his son Abram’s wife, and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan.  And they came as far as Haran, and dwelt there.
32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah died in Haran.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 12

Now YEHOWAH said to Abram, “Depart from your country, and from your family, and from your father’s house, to the land I will show you,
2 and I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and so you shall be a blessing.
3 And I will bless those who bless you, and curse those who curse you.  And in you shall all the families of the earth be blessed.”
4 And Abram departed as YEHOWAH had spoken to him; and Lot went with him.  And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed Haran.
5 And Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his nephew, and all the possessions they had acquired, and all the persons they had obtained in Haran, and they went forth to the land of Canaan; and they came to the land of Canaan.
6 And Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.
7 And YEHOWAH appeared to Abram and said, “To your seed I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to YEHOWAH Who had appeared to him.
8 Then he moved from there to the mountains east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east.  And there he built an altar to YEHOWAH, and called upon the Name of YEHOWAH.
9 And Abram journeyed on, continuing toward the south.
10 And there was a famine in the land, so Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was grievous in the land.
11 And it came to pass when he came near to enter Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, “Behold now, I know that you are a beautiful woman.
12 And it will come to pass, when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they will kill me, but they will keep you alive.
13 Please say that you are my sister, so that it may go well with me because of you, and that I may live on account of you.”
14 And it came to pass when Abram came into Egypt; the Egyptians beheld the woman, that she was very beautiful.
15 The princes of Pharaoh saw her and commended her to Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house.
16 And he treated Abram well on her account, and gave him sheep and oxen and male asses and male and female servants and female asses and camels.
17 But YEHOWAH plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.
18 And Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me she was your wife?
19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for my wife? Now behold, here is your wife, take her and go.”
20 And Pharaoh commanded men concerning him, and they escorted him away with his wife and all that belonged to him.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 13

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 13

And Abram went up from Egypt; he and his wife and all that belonged to him, and Lot with him, towards the south.
2 And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver and in gold.
3 And he went on journeys from the south as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai;
4 to the place of the altar, which he had made there at first.  And there Abram called on the Name of YEHOWAH.
5 Now Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.
6 And the land could not support them, that they might dwell together, for their property was so great that they were not able to remain together.
7 And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s flocks and the herdsmen of Lot’s flocks.  And the Canaanite and the Perizzite were dwelling then in the land.
8 So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no quarrel between you and me, or between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brethren.
9 Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me; if to the left, then I will go to the right, or if to the right, then I will go to the left.”
10 And Lot lifted up his eyes and beheld all the valley of the Jordan, that it was well-watered everywhere; before YEHOWAH destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah; like the garden of YEHOWAH; like the land of Egypt as one goes to Zoar.
11 Then Lot chose for himself all the valley of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. Thus they separated from each other.
12 And Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled in the cities of the valley, and moved his tents as far as Sodom.
13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked and exceeding sinners against YEHOWAH.
14 And YEHOWAH said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Lift up now your eyes and look from the place where you are; northward and southward and eastward and westward,
15 for all the land that you see, I will give to you and to your seed forever.
16 And I will make your seed as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, then your seed can also be numbered.
17 Arise, walk about the land through its length and breadth, for I will give it to you.”
18 Then Abram moved his tents and came and dwelt by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and there he built an altar to YEHOWAH.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 14

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 14

And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goy,
2 that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar.
3 All these joined together in the valley of Siddim, which is the Salt Sea.
4 Twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, but the thirteenth year they rebelled.
5 And in the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him, came and defeated the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim and the Zuzim in Ham and the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim,
6 and the Horites in their Mount Seir, to El-paran, which is by the wilderness.
7 And they returned and came to En-mishpat, which is Kadesh, and struck all the country of the Amalekites, and the Amorites, who dwelt in Hazazon-Tamar.
8 And the king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah and the king of Admah and the king of Zeboim and the king of Bela, which is Zoar came out, and they joined in battle against them in the valley of Siddim;
9 against Chedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of Goy and Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings against five.
10 Now the valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled and fell into them, but those who survived fled to the mountains.
11 Then they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their food, and departed.
12 They also took Lot, Abram’s brother’s son, and his goods, and departed, for he was living in Sodom.
13 And one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, for he dwelt by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner.  And these were allies with Abram.
14 And when Abram heard that his relative was taken captive, he led out his trained men, born in his house; three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them as far as Dan.
15 And he divided himself against them by night; he and his servants, and struck them, and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus.
16 And he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his relative Lot, with his goods; and also the women, and the people.
17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him, after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s valley.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine.  Now he was a priest of El Most High,
19 and he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram of Elohim Most High, possessor of heaven and earth;
20 and blessed be Elohim Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him the tithe of all.
21 And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give the people to me and take the goods for yourself.”
22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted up my hand to YEHOWAH Elohim Most High, possessor of heaven and earth,
23 that I will not take a thread or a sandal thong, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you would say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’
24 I will take nothing beside what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me:  Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre.  Let them take their share.”

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 15

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 15

After these things the word of YEHOWAH came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not fear, Abram, I am your shield.  Your reward shall be exceedingly great.”
2 And Abram said, “O Adonay YEHOWAH, what will you give me, since I am childless, and the steward-heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”
3 And Abram said, “Since You have given no seed to me, one born in my house is my heir.”
4 Then behold, the word of YEHOWAH came to him, saying, “This will not be your heir, but he who will come forth from your own body; he shall be your heir.”
5 And He led him outside and said, “Look now toward the heavens, and number the stars if you are able to number them.”  And He said to him, “So shall your seed be.”
6 And he believed YEHOWAH, and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.
7 And He said to him, “I am YEHOWAH who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess.”
8 And he said, “O Adonay YEHOWAH, how will I know that I will possess it?”
9 He said to him, “Bring Me a heifer of three years old, and a she-goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”
10 And he brought unto Him all these and divided them in two, and laid each half opposite the other, but the birds he did not divide.
11 And when birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
12 Now when the sun was setting, deep sleep fell upon Abram, and behold, a horror of great darkness fell upon him.
13 And He said to Abram, “Know for certain that your seed will be strangers in a land that is not theirs; enslaved and afflicted four hundred years.
14 But also that I will judge that nation who enslaves them, and afterward they will come out with many possessions.
15 And you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried at a good old age.
16 And in the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.”
17 And it came to pass, when the sun had set and it was dark, behold, a smoking oven and a fiery torch passed between the pieces.
18 On that day YEHOWAH made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your seed I give this land, from the river of Egypt as far as the great river; the river Euphrates:
19 the Kenite, and the Kenizzite, and the Kadmonite,
20 and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Rephaim,
21 and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Girgashite, and the Jebusite.”

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 16

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 16

Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, bare him no child, and she had an Egyptian handmaid whose name was Hagar.
2 So Sarai said to Abram, “Now behold, YEHOWAH has restrained me from bearing. Please go in to my handmaid.  It may be that I will obtain children through her.”  And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
3 And Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar, her Egyptian handmade, after Abram had dwelt in the land of Canaan ten years, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife.
4 And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived.  And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
5 And Sarai said to Abram, “My wrong be upon you!  I gave my handmaid into your bosom, but when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes. YEHOWAH judge between you and me.”
6 But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your handmaid is in your hand, do to her what is good in your sight.”  And when Sarai treated her harshly, she fled from her face.
7 Now an angel of YEHOWAH found her by a spring of water in the wilderness; by the spring on the way to Shur.
8 And he said, “Hagar, Sarai’s handmaid, from where have you come, and where are you going?” And she said, “I flee from the face of my mistress, Sarai.”
9 And the angel of YEHOWAH said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself to her hand.”
10 Moreover, the angel of YEHOWAH said to her, “I will greatly multiply your seed, that they will not be numbered for the multitude.”
11 And the angel of YEHOWAH said to her, “Behold, you are with child, and will bear a son, and you shall call his name Ishmael, because YEHOWAH has heard your affliction.
12 He will be a wild ass of a man; his hand against every man, and every man’s hand against him, and he will live to the east of all his brothers.”
13 Then she called the Name of YEHOWAH Who spoke to her, “You are the El Who reveals Himself”, for she said, “Am I alive here even after seeing Him?”
14 Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15 So Hagar begat Abram a son, and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar begat, Ishmael.
16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar begat Ishmael to Abram.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 17

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 17

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, YEHOWAH appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am El Almighty, walk before Me, and be perfect,
2 and I will fulfill My covenant between Me and you;  I will multiply you exceedingly.”
3 And Abram fell on his face, and Elohim talked with him, saying,
4 “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of many of nations.
5 No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of many nations.
6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings will come forth from you.
7 I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and your seed after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be Elohim to you and to your seed after you.
8 I will give to you, and to your seed after you, the land of your sojournings; all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession.  And I will be their Elohim.”
9 And Elohim said to Abraham, “You shall keep My covenant, you and your seed after you in their generations.
10 And this is My covenant which you shall keep between Me and you, and your seed after you:  Every male among you shall be circumcised.
11 You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you.
12 He that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you; every man-child in their generation.  Also, he who is born in the house, or who is bought with money from any foreigner, who is not of your seed;
13 he who is born in your house or who is bought with your money must be circumcised, and My covenant will be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.
14 But the uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”
15 Then Elohim said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but name her Sarah.
16 And I will bless her, and I will give you a son by her.  Then I will bless her, and she shall be nations.  Kings of peoples will be of her.”
17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man one hundred years old? And will Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear?”
18 And Abraham said to Elohim, “Oh that Ishmael might live before You!”
19 But Elohim said, “Sarah your wife will indeed bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac, and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant; for his seed after him.
20 As for Ishmael, I have heard you.  Behold, I will bless him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him greatly.  Twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.
21 But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this appointed time next year.”
22 And when He finished talking with him, Elohim went up from Abraham.
23 And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all who were born in his house, and all who were bought with his money; every male among the men of Abraham’s household, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin on the very same day, as Elohim had said to him.
24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
26 On the very same day Abraham was circumcised, and Ishmael his son,
27 all the men of his household, who were born in the house or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 18

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 18

And YEHOWAH appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, while he sat at the tent door in the heat of the day.
2 And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing before him. And when he saw, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the earth,
3 and said, “My Master, if now I have found favor in Your sight, please do not pass by Your servant.
4 Please let a little water be brought, that You may wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.
5 And I will bring a piece of bread, that You may refresh yourselves.  After that You may go on, since You have visited your servant.”  And they said, “So do, as you have said.”
6 So Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Quickly kneed three measures of fine flour, and make cakes.”
7 Abraham also ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to a servant who hurried to prepare it.
8 And he took butter and milk and the calf, which he had prepared, and placed it before them.  And he stood by them under the tree as they ate.
9 Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “Behold, in the tent.”
10 And He said, “I will certainly return to you at this time next year, and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son.”  And Sarah heard at the tent door, which was behind Him.
11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old; well advanced in age.  It had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.
12 And Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have become old shall I have pleasure, my lord also being old?”
13 And YEHOWAH said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I indeed bear after I have become old?’
14 Is anything too difficult for YEHOWAH? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah will have a son.”
15 Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh”, for she was afraid.  And He said, “No, but you did laugh.”
16 Then the men rose up from there, and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to send them off.
17 And YEHOWAH said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing,
18 since Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him?
19 For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, to keep the way of YEHOWAH; to do righteousness and justice, so that YEHOWAH may bring upon Abraham what He has spoken about him.”
20 And YEHOWAH said, “The outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and their sin is very grievous.
21 I will go down now, and see if they have done entirely according to the cry, which has come to Me; and if not, I will know.”
22 Then the men turned away from there and walked toward Sodom, while Abraham was still standing before YEHOWAH.
23 And Abraham drew near and said, “Will You indeed destroy the righteous with the wicked?
24 What if there are fifty righteous within the city, will You indeed destroy it and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous who are in it?
25 Far be it from You to do such a thing; to slay the righteous with the wicked, that the righteous should be as the wicked.  Far be it from You!  Shall not the Judge of all the earth do justly?”
26 And YEHOWAH said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place on their account.”
27 And Abraham answered, “Behold now, I have taken it upon myself to speak to Adonay, although I am dust and ashes.
28 But what if the fifty righteous are lacking five, will You destroy all the city because of five?” And He said, “If I find forty-five there, I will not destroy it.”
29 And he spoke to Him yet again and said, “What if forty are found there?” And He said, “I will not do it on account of the forty.”
30 Then he said, “Oh let Adonay not be angry, and I shall speak; what if thirty are found there?” And He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
31 And he said, “Now behold, I have taken it upon myself to speak to Adonay; what if twenty are found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it on account of the twenty.”
32 Then he said, “Oh let Adonay not be angry, and I shall speak only this once; what if ten are found there?” And He said, “I will not destroy it on account of the ten.”
33 And YEHOWAH went away as soon as He had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 19

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 19

And the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, as Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed his face down to the earth,
2 and he said, “Behold now, my lords, turn in, please, into your servant’s house, and spend the night, and wash your feet, that you may rise early and go on your way.” They said however, “No, but we shall spend the night in the open area.”
3 And he urged them greatly, so they turned in unto him and entered his house.  And he made a feast for them, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
4 But before they lay down, the men of the city; the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old; all the people from every quarter,
5 and they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who have come in to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have relations with them.”
6 But Lot went out at the door to them, and shut the door behind him,
7 and said, “Please, brethren, do not act wickedly.
8 “Behold now, I have two daughters who have not known a man.  Let me bring them out to you, and do to them as is pleasing in your sight, only to these men do nothing, for therefore have they come under the shelter of my roof.”
9 But they said, “Stand back!” And they said, “This one came as a stranger, and now he is acting like a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them.”  And they pressed hard upon the man; against Lot, and came near to breaking the door.
10 But the men stretched forth their hands and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut the door.
11 And they struck the men who were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves to find the doorway.
12 Then the men said to Lot, “Who else have you here? A son-in-law, and your sons, and your daughters; whoever you have in the city, bring out of this place,
13 for we are about to destroy this place, because the cry of them is great before the face of YEHOWAH.  And YEHOWAH has sent us to destroy it.”
14 And Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who married his daughters, and said, “Up, get out of this place, for YEHOWAH will destroy the city!” But to his sons-in-law he seemed as one that mocked.
15 And when morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Up, take your wife and your two daughters who are present, lest you perish in the iniquity of the city.”
16 And while he lingered, the men seized his hand, and the hand of his wife, and the hands of his two daughters; YEHOWAH being merciful to him, and they brought him out, and put him outside the city.
17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, one said, “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you, and do not stay anywhere in the valley.  Escape to the mountains, lest you perish.”
18 But Lot said to them, “Oh no, my Masters!
19 Behold now, your servant has found favor in your eyes, and you have magnified your loving-kindness, which you have shown me by saving my life, but I cannot escape to the mountains, lest some evil overtake me and I will die.
20 Behold now, this city is near to flee to, and it is a little one.  Please, let me escape there (is it not a little one?) that my life may be saved!”
21 And he said to him, “Behold, I accept you concerning this request also, to not overthrow the city of which you have spoken.
22 Quickly, escape there, for I cannot do anything until you arrive there.”  Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
23 The sun had risen over the earth when Lot entered Zoar.
24 Then YEHOWAH rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from YEHOWAH out of heaven,
25 and He overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and whatever grew on the ground.
26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
27 And Abraham arose early in the morning, to the place where he had stood before YEHOWAH,
28 and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the valley, and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace.
29 And it came to pass, when Elohim destroyed the cities of the valley, that Elohim remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt.
30 And Lot went up from Zoar, and dwelt in the mountains, and his two daughters with him, for he feared dwelling in Zoar.  And he dwelt in a cave; he and his two daughters.
31 Then the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is not a man on the earth to come in to us after the manner of the earth.
32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and let us lie with him, that we may preserve our seed through our father.”
33 So they made their father drink wine that night, and the firstborn went in and lay with her father, and he did not know of her lying down or her rising.
34 And it came to pass on the next day, the firstborn said to the younger, “Behold, I lay last night with my father.  Let us make him drink wine tonight also, then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve our seed through our father.”
35 So they made their father drink wine that night also, and the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know of her lying down or her rising.
36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.
37 The firstborn begat a son, and called his name Moab.  He is the father of the Moabites to this day.
38 And the younger also begat a son, and called his name Ben-ammi.  He is the father of the sons of Ammon to this day.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 20

Now Abraham journeyed from there toward the south country, and settled between Kadesh and Shur, and then sojourned in Gerar.
2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister;” so Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.
3 But Elohim came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man, because of the woman you have taken, for she is married.”
4 But Abimelech had not come near her, and he said, “Adonay, will You also slay a righteous nation?
5 Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’  In the integrity of my heart, and the innocence of my hands, I have done this.”
6 Then Elohim said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart, and I also kept you from sinning against Me.  Therefore, I did not grant you to touch her.
7 Now therefore, restore the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you will live.  But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die; you and all who are yours.”
8 Therefore, Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants and spoke all these things in their ears, and the men were greatly afraid.
9 Then Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? And how have I offended you that you have brought on me, and on my kingdom, a great sin? You have done to me deeds that ought not to be done.”
10 And Abimelech asked Abraham, “What have you seen, that you have done this thing?”
11 And Abraham said, “Because I thought, surely there is no fear of Elohim in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.
12 Moreover, she is indeed my sister; the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife.
13 And it came to pass, when Elohim caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, ‘This is the kindness that you will show to me:  Wherever we may go, say of me, “He is my brother.”‘”
14 And Abimelech then took sheep and oxen and male and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and restored to him Sarah his wife.
15 And Abimelech said, “Behold, my land is before you, dwell wherever it pleases you.”
16 And to Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver. Behold, it is your vindication before all who are with you, and before all men; and she was reproved.”
17 And Abraham prayed to Elohim, and Elohim healed Abimelech and his wife and his handmaids, so that they begat,
18 for YEHOWAH had closed up all the wombs of the household of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 21

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 21

And YEHOWAH remembered Sarah as He had said, and YEHOWAH did for Sarah as He had promised.
2 So Sarah conceived and begat a son to Abraham in his old age; at the appointed time of which Elohim had spoken to him.
3 And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah begat to him, Isaac.
4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as Elohim had commanded him.
5 Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
6 And Sarah said, “Elohim has made me laugh, and everyone who hears will laugh with me.”
7 And she said, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would have a nursing child? Yet I have born him a son in his old age.”
8 And the child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.
9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking.
10 Therefore she said to Abraham, “Drive out this handmaid and her son, for the son of this handmaid will not be an heir with my son Isaac.”
11 And the matter grieved Abraham greatly because of his son.
12 But Elohim said to Abraham, “Do not be grieved because of the lad and your handmaid. Whatever Sarah says to you, listen to her, for through Isaac your seed shall be named.
13 And the son of the handmaid I will also make a nation, because he is your seed.”
14 Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread, and a skin of water, and gave them to Hagar, putting them on her shoulder; and with the boy, sent her away.  And she departed and wandered about in the wilderness of Beersheba.
15 When the water in the skin was used up, she cast the boy under one of the bushes,
16 and she went and sat down opposite him, about a bow-shot away, for she said, “Do not let me see the boy die.”  And she sat opposite him, and lifted up her voice and wept.
17 And Elohim heard the voice of the lad, and an angel of Elohim called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What ails you, Hagar? Do not fear, for Elohim has heard the voice of the lad where he is.
18 Arise, lift up the lad and hold him by the hand, for I will make him a great nation.”
19 Then Elohim opened her eyes and she saw a well of water, and she went and filled the skin with water and gave the lad a drink.
20 And Elohim was with the lad, and he grew, and he dwelled in the wilderness and became an archer.
21 He dwelled in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took for him a wife from the land of Egypt.
22 And it came to pass at that time that Abimelech and Phicol, the general of his army, spoke to Abraham, saying, “Elohim is with you in all you do!
23 Now therefore, swear to me here by Elohim, that you will not deal falsely with me or with my son, or with my sons’ son.  But according to the kindness that I have done unto you, you shall show unto me, and unto the land in which you have sojourned.”
24 And Abraham said, “I swear.”
25 But Abraham reproved Abimelech because of the well of water that the servants of Abimelech had violently taken away.
26 And Abimelech said, “I do not know who has done this thing, neither did you tell me, nor did I hear of it until today.”
27 And Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and both of them made a covenant.
28 And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves,
29 and Abimelech asked Abraham, “Why have you set these seven ewe lambs by themselves?”
30 And he said, “That you will take these seven ewe lambs from my hand, that they may be a witness to me, that I dug this well.”
31 Therefore he called that place Beersheba, because there the two of them swore an oath.
32 So they made a covenant at Beersheba, and Abimelech and Phicol, the general of his army, rose up and returned to the land of the Philistines.
33 Abraham planted a grove of trees at Beersheba, and there he called on the Name of YEHOWAH; the Everlasting El.
34 And Abraham sojourned in the land of the Philistines many days.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 22

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 22

Now it came to pass after these things, that Elohim attempted to establish an adventure with Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Behold, here I am.”
2 He said, “Take now your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriyeh, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.”
3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son.  And he split wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went to the place of which Elohim had told him.
4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar,
5 and Abraham said to his young men, “Sit here with the ass, and I and the lad will go yonder, and we will worship and come again to you.”
6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife, and they both walked on together.
7 And Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.”  And he said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
8 Abraham said, “My son, Elohim will provide Himself the lamb for the burnt offering.” So the two of them walked on together.
9 And they came to the place of which Elohim had told him, and Abraham built an altar and arrayed the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand and took the knife to slay his son,
11 but an angel of YEHOWAH called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
12 And he said, “Stretch not your hand against the lad; neither do anything to him, for now I know that you revere Elohim, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind, a ram caught in the thicket by his horns.  And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son.
14 And Abraham called the name of that place, “YEHOWAH will provide”, as it is said to this day, “In the mount of YEHOWAH it will be provided.”
15 And the angel of YEHOWAH called unto Abraham a second time from heaven,
16 and said, “By Myself I swear, declares YEHOWAH, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son,
17 I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and as the sand of the seashore.  And your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies,
18 and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
19 So Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba, and Abraham dwelled at Beersheba.
20 And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, “Behold, Milcah also has born children to your brother Nahor:
21 Uz his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,
22 and Chesed and Hazo and Pildash and Jidlaph and Bethuel.
23 Bethuel begat Rebekah; these eight did Milcah bear to Nahor, Abraham’s brother.
24 And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, also begat Tebah and Gaham and Thahash and Maachah.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 23

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 23

Sarah lived one hundred and twenty-seven years.  These were the years of the life of Sarah.
2 And Sarah died in Kiriath-arba; that is, Hebron, in the land of Canaan.  And Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.
3 Then Abraham rose from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying,
4 “I am a stranger and a sojourner with you.  Give me a grave site among you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”
5 And the sons of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him,
6 “Hear us, my lord, you are a mighty prince among us.  Bury your dead in the choicest of our graves; none of us will refuse you his grave, that you may bury your dead.”
7 So Abraham rose up and bowed down to the people of the land; the sons of Heth.
8 And he spoke with them, saying, “If it be your will that I should bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and entreat Ephron the son of Zohar for me,
9 that he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he owns, which is at the end of his field.  For as much money as it is worth, he shall give it to me as a possession, in your presence, for a burial site.”
10 Now Ephron was seated among the sons of Heth, and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the sons of Heth; all who went at the gate of his city, saying,
11 “No, my lord, hear me, the field I give to you, and I give the cave that is in it.  In the presence of the sons of my people I give it to you; bury your dead.”
12 And Abraham bowed down before the people of the land,
13 and he spoke to Ephron in the ears of the people of the land, saying, “If you will please hear me, I will give the price of the field, take it from me that I may bury my dead there.”
14 Then Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him,
15 “My lord, hear me, a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver, what is that between me and you? Bury therefore your dead.”
16 And Abraham heard Ephron, and Abraham weighed out for Ephron the silver, which he had named in the ears of the sons of Heth:  Four hundred shekels of silver; current with the merchants.
17 So the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre; the field and cave that was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, that were within its borders round about, were decreed
18 to Abraham for a possession in the presence of the sons of Heth; before all who went in at the gate of his city.
19 After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field at Machpelah, facing Mamre; that is Hebron, in the land of Canaan.
20 So the field, and the cave that is in it, were decreed to Abraham for a burying place by the sons of Heth.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 24

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 24

Abraham was old, advanced in age, and YEHOWAH had blessed Abraham in all things.
2 And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household, who ruled over all that he owned, “Please place your hand under my thigh,
3 and I will make you swear by YEHOWAH, the Elohim of heaven and the Elohim of earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell.
4 But you will go to my country, and to my relatives, and there take a wife for my son Isaac.”
5 And the servant said to him, “What if the woman is not willing to follow me to this land, should I take your son back to the land from where you came?”
6 Abraham said to him, “Beware that you do not take my son back there!
7 YEHOWAH, the Elohim of heaven, Who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my birth, and Who spoke to me, and Who swore to me, saying, ‘To your seed I will give this land,’ He will send His angel before you, and will take a wife for my son from there.
8 But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be clear from this my oath.  Only do not take my son back there.”
9 So the servant placed his hand under the thigh of Abraham his lord, and swore to him concerning the matter.
10 The servant then took ten camels from the camels of his lord, and departed with all manner of good things in hand from his lord; and he rose up and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor.
11 And he made the camels kneel down outside the city, by the well of water at the evening time; the time when the women go out to draw water.
12 And he said, “O YEHOWAH, Elohim of my lord Abraham, please bring me favor this day, and show loving-kindness to my lord Abraham.
13 Behold, I am standing by the fountain of water, and as the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water,
14 now let it come to pass that the girl to whom I say, ‘Please let down your pitcher so that I may drink,’ and who shall say, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels also’, may she be the one whom You have appointed for Your servant Isaac.  And by this shall I know that You have shown loving-kindness to my lord.”
15 Before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel, the son of Milcah, the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor, came out with her pitcher upon her shoulder.
16 And the girl was very beautiful.  A virgin; neither had any man known her.  And she went down to the fountain, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said, “Please let me drink a little water from your pitcher.”
18 And she said, “Drink, my lord”, and she hurried to lower her pitcher to her hand, and gave him a drink.
19 And when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will draw also for your camels until they have finished drinking.”
20 So she hastened to pour her pitcher into the trough, and ran back to the well to draw; and she drew for all his camels.
21 And the man was stunned, silently wondering whether YEHOWAH had made his journey prosperous or not.
22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing a half-shekel, and two bracelets of gold for her wrists, weighing ten shekels,
23 and said, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to lodge?”
24 She said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, whom she begat to Nahor.”
25 And she said to him, “We have enough of both straw and fodder, and room to lodge in.”
26 And the man bowed down his head and worshiped YEHOWAH.
27 And he said, “Blessed be YEHOWAH, Elohim of my lord Abraham, who has not forsaken my lord of His loving-kindness or His truth.  As for me, YEHOWAH has guided my way to the house of my lord’s brethren!”
28 And the girl ran and told these things to her mother’s household.
29 Now Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban, and Laban ran outside to the man at the well.
30 And it came to pass, when he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister’s arm, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, “This is what the man said to me,” he came out to the man, and behold, he was standing by the camels, by the well.
31 And he said, “Come in, blessed of YEHOWAH!  Why do you stand outside, for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels?”
32 And the man came in to the house, and Laban ungirded the camels, and gave straw and fodder to the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the feet of the men who were with him.
33 But when it was set for him to eat, he said, “I will not eat until I have told my errand.” And he said, “Speak on.”
34 And he said, “I am Abraham’s servant.
35 YEHOWAH has greatly blessed my lord, so that he has become great.  And He has given him flocks and herds, and silver and gold, and servants and handmaids, and camels and asses.
36 And Sarah, my lord’s wife, begat a son to my lord in her old age, and unto him he has given all that he has.
37 And my lord made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell.
38 But you shall go to my father’s house, and to my family, and from there take a wife for my son.’
39 And I said to my lord, ‘What if the woman will not follow me?’
40 And he said to me, ‘YEHOWAH, before whom I have walked, will send His angel with you to make your journey prosper, and you will take a wife for my son from my family, and from my father’s house.
41 Then you will be clear from my oath, when you come to my family.  And if they do not give her to you, you will be clear from my oath.’
42 And I came today to the fountain, and said, ‘O YEHOWAH, Elohim of my lord Abraham, if now You will make my journey on which I go prosper,
43 behold, I am standing by the fountain.  Let it come to pass that the maiden who comes out to draw, and to whom I say, “Please let me drink a little water from your pitcher”,
44 and who will say to me, “You drink, and I will draw for your camels also”, let her be the woman whom YEHOWAH has appointed for my lord’s son.’
45 Before I had ended speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her pitcher on her shoulder, and went down to the fountain and drew, and I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’
46 And she hastened to lower her pitcher, and said, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels also’.  So I drank, and she watered the camels also.
47 And I asked her, and said, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ And she said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah begat to him’.  And I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her arm,
48 and I bowed down and worshiped YEHOWAH, and blessed YEHOWAH, Elohim of my lord Abraham, Who led me in the right way to take the daughter of my lord’s brother for his son.
49 And now if you are going to deal kindly and truly with my lord, tell me.  And if not, let me know, that I may turn to the right hand or the left.”
50 Then Laban and Bethuel replied, “The matter comes from YEHOWAH!  We cannot speak to you bad or good.
51 Behold Rebekah before you, take her and go, and let her be your lord’s sons’ wife, as YEHOWAH has spoken.”
52 When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed himself to the ground before YEHOWAH.
53 And the servant brought forth things of silver, and things of gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah.  He also gave precious things to her brother and to her mother.
54 Then he and the men with him ate and drank and spent the night.  When they rose in the morning, he said, “Send me away to my lord.”
55 But her brother and her mother said, “Let the girl remain with us at least ten days. Afterward she may go.”
56 And he said to them, “Defer me not, seeing as YEHOWAH has prospered my way.  Send me away that I may go to my lord.”
57 And they said, “We will call the girl and inquire her wishes.”
58 Then they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” And she said, “I will go.”
59 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, with Abraham’s servant and his men.
60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, “You are our sister, may you become thousands of ten thousands, and may your seed possess the gate of those who hate them.”
61 Then Rebekah arose with her handmaid, and they rode on the camels and followed the man.  And the servant took Rebekah and went his way.
62 Now Isaac had just returned from going to Beer-lahai-roi, for he was dwelling in the south country.
63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening time, and he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, camels were coming.
64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes when she saw Isaac, and she got down from the camel,
65 and she said to the servant, “Who is that man walking in the field to meet us?” And the servant said, “He is my lord.”  Therefore she took her veil and covered herself.
66 And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done.
67 Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and he took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her.  And Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 25

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 25

And Abraham took another wife named Keturah.
2 She begat to him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah.
3 And Jokshan begat Sheba and Dedan.  And the sons of Dedan were, Asshurim, Letushim and Leummim.
4 The sons of Midian:  Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida and Eldaah.  All these were the sons of Keturah.
5 And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac,
6 but to the sons of his concubines, which Abraham had, he gave gifts while he was still living, and sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward; to the land of the east.
7 These are the days of the years of Abraham’s life, which he lived, one hundred and seventy-five years.
8 And Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age; an old man, satisfied.  And he was gathered to his people.
9 Then his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre;
10 the field that Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth.  There Abraham was buried with Sarah his wife.
11 And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that Elohim blessed his son Isaac, and Isaac dwelled by Beer-lahai-roi.
12 Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s handmaid, begat to Abraham;
13 and these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to the descent of their generations:  Nebajoth, the firstborn of Ishmael, and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam
14 and Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa;
15 Hadad, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah.
16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their villages, and by their castles.  Twelve princes according to their nations.
17 These are the years of the life of Ishmael, one hundred and thirty-seven years, and he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.
18 And they dwelled from Havilah to Shur, which faces Egypt as one goes toward Assyria. He died in the presence of all his brethren.
19 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son:  Abraham begat Isaac,
20 and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan-aram; the sister of Laban the Syrian, to be his wife.
21 And Isaac prayed to YEHOWAH for his wife, because she was barren, and YEHOWAH listened to him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
22 And the children struggled together within her, and she said, “Lo, what is this, and why am I thus?” And she went and inquired of YEHOWAH.
23 And YEHOWAH said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples will be separated from your bowels.  One nation will be stronger than the other, and the older shall serve the younger.”
24 When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25 Now the first came forth red all over, like a hairy garment, and they called his name Esau.
26 After this his brother came out, and his hand took hold of Esau’s heel, so his name was called Jacob.  And Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.
27 And the boys grew, and Esau became a skillful hunter; a man of the field, but Jacob was a gentle man, dwelling in tents.
28 Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29 And it came to pass that Jacob cooked a dish, and Esau came in from the field, and he was famished.
30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Please feed me with that red stuff there, for I am faint.” Therefore his name was called Edom.
31 But Jacob said, “Sell me this day your birthright.”
32 And Esau said, “Behold, I am at the point of death, what purpose then is a birthright to me?”
33 And Jacob said, “Swear to me this day!”  So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and the dish of lentils, and he ate and drank, and rose up, and went on his way.  Thus Esau despised his birthright.

And there was famine in the land, besides the previous famine, which was in the days of Abraham.  And Isaac went to Gerar, to Abimelech king of the Philistines.
2 And YEHOWAH appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt.  Abide in the land of which I shall tell you.
3 Sojourn in this land and I will be with you and bless you, for to you and to your seed I will give all these lands, and I will confirm the oath which I swore to your father Abraham.
4 I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and will give your seed all these lands. And by your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed,
5 because Abraham obeyed Me and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes and My laws.”
6 So Isaac dwelled in Gerar.
7 And when the men of the place asked about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,” for he feared saying, “my wife”, “lest the men of the place kill me on account of Rebekah, for she is beautiful.”
8 And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out through a window, and saw, and behold, Isaac was caressing Rebekah his wife.
9 And Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, she surely is your wife!  Why then did you say, ‘She is my sister’?” And Isaac said to him, “Because I thought I might die on account of her.”
10 Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
11 So Abimelech charged all his people, saying, “He who touches this man, or his wife, shall surely be put to death.”
12 Now Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold.  And YEHOWAH blessed him,
13 and the man became great, and continued to grow until he became very great,
14 for he had possessions of flocks, and possessions of herds, and very many servants, and the Philistines envied him.
15 Therefore,  all the wells that his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines stopped by filling them with earth.
16 Then Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are much mightier than us.”
17 So Isaac departed from there and pitched his tents in the valley of Gerar, and dwelled there.
18 Then Isaac dug again the wells of water that had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham.  And he called them by the same names that his father had given them.
19 And Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found there a well of flowing water,
20 and the shepherds of Gerar fought with the shepherds of Isaac, saying, “The water is ours!”  So he named the well Esek, because they quarreled with him.
21 Then they dug another well, and they fought over it too, so he named it Sitnah.
22 He moved away from there and dug another well, and they did not fight over it, so he named it Rehoboth, for he said, “At last!  YEHOWAH has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.”
23 And he went up from there to Beersheba.
24 And YEHOWAH appeared to him the same night and said, “I am the Elohim of your father Abraham.  Fear not, for I am with you.  I will bless you, and multiply your seed, for the sake of My servant Abraham.”
25 So he built an altar there, and called upon the Name of YEHOWAH, and pitched his tent there, and there Isaac’s servants dug a well.
26 And Abimelech came to him from Gerar, with his friend Ahuzzath, and Phicol the commander of his army.
27 Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?”
28 And they said, “We see certainly that YEHOWAH is with you.  So we said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us, between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you,
29 that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good, and have sent you away in peace.  You are now the blessed of YEHOWAH.'”
30 Then he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.
31 And in the morning they rose up early and swore oaths, one to another, and Isaac sent them away and they departed from him in peace.
32 And it came to pass on the same day, that Isaac’s servants came in and told him regarding the well they had dug, and said to him, “We have found water.”
33 So he called it Shibah, therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.
34 When Esau was forty years old he married Judith the daughter of Beeryeh the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite,
35 and they were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 27

And it came to pass, when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, that he called his eldest son, Esau, and said to him, “My son.”  And he said to him, “Here I am.”
2 And he said, “Behold now, I am old, and know not the day of my death.
3 Therefore, please take your weapons; your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt for me some venison,
4 and prepare for me savory meat, such as I love.  And bring it to me that I may eat; so that my soul may bless you before I die.”
5 Now Rebekah heard what Isaac spoke to his son Esau, so when Esau went to the field to hunt for venison to bring,
6 Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying, “Behold, I heard your father speak to Esau your brother, saying,
7 ‘Bring me venison and prepare for me a savory dish, that I may eat, and bless you before YEHOWAH, before my death.’
8 Therefore, my son, listen to me as I command you:
9 Go now to the flock and bring me two good young goats from there, and I will prepare them as a savory dish for your father, such as he loves.
10 And you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, and that he may bless you before his death.”
11 And Jacob said to his mother Rebekah, “Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man and I am a smooth man.
12 What if my father feels me? Then I will seem as a deceiver in his sight, and I will bring a curse upon myself, and not a blessing.”
13 And his mother said to him, “Your curse be on me, my son, only obey my voice, and go, get them for me.”
14 So he went and got, and brought to his mother, and his mother made savory food, such as his father loved.
15 Then Rebekah took the best clothes of Esau her elder son, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son.
16 And she put the skins of the young goats on his hands, and on the smooth part of his neck,
17 and she gave the savory meat and the bread, which she had made, to her son Jacob.
18 Then he came to his father and said, “My father.”  And he said, “Here I am.  Who are you, my son?”
19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn.  I have done as you told me. Arise, please, sit and eat of my venison, that your soul may bless me.”
20 Isaac said to his son, “How have you found it so quickly, my son?” And he said, “Because YEHOWAH your Elohim brought it to me.”
21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.”
22 So Jacob came near to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”
23 And he did not discern him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands. So he blessed him,
24 and he said, “Are you really my son Esau?” And he said, “I am.”
25 So he said, “Come to me, and I will eat of my son’s venison, that my soul may bless you.”  And he brought it to him, and he ate, and he brought him wine and he drank.
26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come near now and kiss me, my son.”
27 So he came near and kissed him, and when he smelled the smell of his clothes, he blessed him and said, “See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field that YEHOWAH has blessed.
28 Therefore, Elohim give you of the dew of heaven, and of the fatness of the earth, and an abundance of wheat and new wine.
29 Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you.  Be lord of your brethren, and may your mother’s sons bow down to you.  Cursed be those who curse you, and blessed be those who bless you.”
30 And it came to pass, as soon as Isaac had ended blessing Jacob, and Jacob had scarcely gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting.
31 And he also made savory meat, and brought it to his father, and he said to his father, “Let my father rise and eat of his son’s venison, that you may bless me.”
32 And Isaac his father said to him, “Who are you?” And he said, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.”
33 Then Isaac trembled with a great trembling, and said, “Who was he then that hunted game and brought it to me, and I have eaten of all before you came, and blessed him?  Yes, and he shall be blessed!”
34 When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried out with a great and exceedingly bitter cry, and said to his father, “Bless me; me also, O my father!”
35 And he said, “Your brother came deceitfully, and has taken away your blessing.”
36 And he said, “Is he not rightly named Jacob, for he has supplanted me these two times? He took away my birthright, and behold, now he has taken away my blessing.” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”
37 And Isaac replied to Esau, “Behold, I have made him your lord, and all his brethren I have given to him as servants.  And with wheat and new wine I have sustained him. And what can I do now for you, my son?”
38 Esau said to his father, “Have you only one blessing, my father? Bless me; me also, O my father!” And Esau lifted his voice and wept.
39 And Isaac his father answered and said to him, “Behold, your dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above.
40 By your sword you shall live, and your brother you shall serve.  But it shall come to pass, when you have the dominion, that you will break his yoke from your neck.”
41 So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are near.  Then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
42 When the words of Esau, her elder son, were told to Rebekah, she sent and called her younger son Jacob, and said to him, “Behold, your brother Esau comforts himself, that he will kill you.
43 Therefore, my son, hear my voice, and rise up.  Flee to Laban my brother in Haran!
44 Abide with him a few days, until your brother’s fury subsides;
45 until your brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him.  Then I will send and get you from there.  Why should I be bereaved of you both in one day?”
46 And Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of life, because of the daughters of Heth.  If Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth, like these from the daughters of the land, what good will my life be to me?”

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 28

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 28

So Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said to him, “You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.
2 Rise up, go to Padan-aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father, and take for yourself from there a wife; from the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.
3 May El Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples,
4 and give you the blessing of Abraham; to you and to your seed with you, that you may possess the land of your sojournings, which Elohim gave to Abraham.”
5 Thus Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Padan-aram, to Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.
6 When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Padan-aram, to take for himself a wife from there, and that as he blessed him, he charged him, saying, “You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan,”
7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother, and had gone to Padan-aram,
8 and Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan did not please his father Isaac,
9 that Esau went to Ishmael, and took as a wife, besides the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebajoth.
10 And Jacob departed from Beersheba and went toward Haran.
11 And he came to a certain place and stopped for the night, because the sun had set. And he took a stone of that place, and put it as a pillow, and lay down in that place to sleep.
12 And he had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set-up on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and behold, the angels of Elohim were ascending and descending on it.
13 And behold, YEHOWAH stood above it and said, “I am YEHOWAH, the Elohim of your father Abraham, and the Elohim of Isaac.  The land on which you lie, I will give to you and to your seed.
14 Your seed will also be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south, and in you, and in your seed, shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land, for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.”
16 And Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely YEHOWAH is in this place, and I knew it not.”
17 And he was afraid and said, “How reverent is this place!  This is none other than the house of Elohim, and the gate of heaven.”
18 So Jacob rose up early in the morning and took the stone that he had put as his pillow, and set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it.
19 And he called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of that city was first named Luz.
20 And Jacob made a vow, saying, “If Elohim will be with me, and will keep me on this course that I go, and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear,
21 and I come again to my father’s house in safety, then YEHOWAH will be my Elohim,
22 and this stone that I have set up as a pillar, will be Elohim’s house.  And of all that You shall give me, I will surely give a tenth to You.”

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 29

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 29

And Jacob continued his journey, and came to the land of the sons of the east.
2 And he looked, and saw a well in the field, and behold, three flocks of sheep were lying there by it.  For out of that well they watered the flocks.  And a great stone was on the mouth of the well.
3 When all the flocks were gathered there, they rolled the stone from the mouth of the well and watered the sheep, and put the stone back in its place on the mouth of the well.
4 And Jacob said to them, “My brethren, where are you from?” And they said, “We are from Haran.”
5 He said to them, “Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?” And they said, “We know.”
6 And he said to them, “Is he well?” And they said, “He is well, and behold, Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep.”
7 He said, “Behold, it is still high day.  It is not time for the flocks to be gathered. Water the sheep, and go, pasture them.”
8 But they said, “We cannot until all the flocks are gathered, and they roll the stone from the mouth of the well, then we water the sheep.”
9 While he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she was a shepherdess.
10 And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of Laban, his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban, his mother’s brother, that Jacob went near and rolled the stone from the mouth of the well, and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother.
11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted his voice and wept.
12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was a brother of her father, and that he was Rebekah’s son.  And she ran and told her father.
13 So when Laban heard the report of Jacob, his sister’s son, he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house.  And he told Laban all these things.
14 Laban said to him, “Surely you are my bone and my flesh.”  And he stayed with him a month.
15 Then Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my brother, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?”
16 Laban had two daughters.  The name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.
17 The eyes of Leah were weak, but Rachel was beautiful of form and appearance.
18 And Jacob loved Rachel, so he said, “I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter.”
19 Laban said, “It is better that I give her to you than to give her to another man; dwell with me.”
20 So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they were in his eyes but a few days, because he loved her.
21 Then Jacob said to Laban “Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her.”
22 So Laban gathered together all the men of the place and made a feast.
23 And it came to pass that in the evening he took his daughter Leah, and brought her to him, and he went in unto her.
24 And Laban gave to Leah, Zilpah his servant, as a handmaid.
25 And it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah!  And he said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why then have you deceived me?”
26 But Laban said, “It is not done in our country to marry off the younger before the firstborn.
27 Fulfill the week with this one, and I will give you the other also, for the service that you shall serve with me; for another seven years.”
28 And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week, and he gave him his daughter Rachel as his wife.
29 Laban also gave his servant Bilhah to his daughter Rachel, as her handmaid.
30 So he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved Rachel more than Leah, and he served with Laban for another seven years.
31 When YEHOWAH saw that Leah was hated, He opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.
32 And Leah begat a son and named him Reuben, for she said, “Because YEHOWAH has seen my affliction, surely now my husband will love me.”
33 And she conceived again and begat a son and said, “Because YEHOWAH has heard that I am hated, He has therefore given me this also.”  So she named him Simeon.
34 She conceived again and begat a son and said, “Now this time my husband will cleave unto me, because I have borne him three sons.”  Therefore he was named Levi.
35 And she conceived again and begat a son and said, “This time I will praise YEHOWAH,” therefore she named him Yehudah.  Then she stopped bearing.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 30

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 30

When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister, and she said unto Jacob, “Give me children, or else I die.”
2 And Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, “Am I in the place of Elohim, Who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?”
3 She, therefore said, “Here is my handmaid Bilhah, go in unto her that she may bear on my knees, that through her I too may have children.”
4 So she gave him Bilhah her handmaid as a wife, and Jacob went in unto her.
5 And Bilhah conceived and begat Jacob a son.
6 Then Rachel said, “Elohim has set straight my course, and has also heard my voice, and has given me a son.”  Therefore she called his name Dan.
7 And Rachel’s handmaid Bilhah conceived again and begat Jacob a second son.
8 And Rachel said, “With wrestling’s of Elohim have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed.” And she called his name Naphtali.
9 When Leah saw that she had stopped bearing, she took Zilpah her handmaid, and gave her to Jacob as a wife.
10 And Leah’s handmaid Zilpah begat Jacob a son.
11 Then Leah said, “A troop comes forth!”  So she named him Gad.
12 And Leah’s handmaid Zilpah begat Jacob a second son,
13 and Leah said, “Happy am I!  For women will call me happy.”  So she named him Asher.
14 Now Reuben went out in the time of the wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Leah.  Then Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”
15 But she said to her, “Is it a small matter for you to take my husband? And would you take my son’s mandrakes also?” So Rachel said, “Therefore he may lie with you tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes.”
16 When Jacob came in from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must come in to me, for I have surely hired you with my son’s mandrakes.”  So he lay with her that night.
17 And Elohim heard Leah, and she conceived and begat Jacob a fifth son,
18 and Leah said, “Elohim has given me my wage, because I gave my handmaid to my husband.”  So she named him Issachar.
19 And Leah conceived again and begat a sixth son to Jacob,
20 and Leah said, “Elohim has endowed me with a good dowry.  Now my husband will dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons.”  So she named him Zebulun.
21 Afterward she begat a daughter, and named her Dinah.
22 Then Elohim remembered Rachel, and Elohim heard her and opened her womb,
23 and she conceived and begat a son and said, “Elohim has taken away my reproach.”
24 And she named him Yehseph, saying, “May YEHOWAH add to me another son.”
25 And it came to pass, when Rachel had borne Yehseph, that Jacob said to Laban, “Send me away, that I may go to my own place and to my own country;
26 give my wives and my children, for whom I have served you, and let me go, for you know my service, which I have served you.”
27 But Laban said to him, “If now it pleases you, I have seen through experience that YEHOWAH has blessed me on account of you.”
28 And he said, “Name me your wages, and I will give it.”
29 But he said to him, “You know how I have served you, and how your livestock have fared with me,
30 for you had little before me, and it has increased to a multitude, and YEHOWAH has blessed you by every step I took.  But now, when shall I provide for my own household also?”
31 So he said, “What shall I give you?” And Jacob said, “You shall not give me anything.  If you will do this thing for me, I will again tend and keep your flock:
32 I will pass through your entire flock today, and remove from there every speckled and spotted sheep, and all the black one’s among the lambs, and the spotted and speckled among the goats, as my wages.
33 So shall my righteousness answer for me later, when you come concerning my wages. Every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats and black among the lambs, with me, will be considered stolen.”
34 Laban said, “Behold!  Let it be according to your word.”
35 So he removed that day the striped and spotted male goats, and all the speckled and spotted female goats; every one with white in it, and all the black ones among the sheep, and gave them into the care of his sons.
36 And he put three days’ journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob tended the rest of Laban’s flocks.
37 And Jacob took green rods of poplar, almond and chestnut trees, and peeled white stripes in them, making the white appear, which is in the rods.
38 And he set the rods that he had peeled in front of the flocks, in the troughs of the watering troughs where the flocks came to drink.  And they conceived when they came to drink.
39 So the flocks conceived by the rods, and the flocks brought forth striped, speckled, and spotted.
40 And Jacob separated the lambs, and made the flocks face toward the striped and all the black in the flock of Laban; and he kept his own herds separate, and did not put them with Laban’s flock.
41 And whenever the stronger of the flock conceived, Jacob would place the rods in the sight of the flock in the troughs, so that they might conceive by the rods,
42 but when the flock was feeble, he did not put in.  So the feebler were Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s.
43 And the man became exceedingly great, and had large flocks, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels and asses.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 31

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 31

And he heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, “Jacob has taken away all that was our father’s, and from what was our father’s, he has made all this glory.”
2 And Jacob saw the countenance of Laban, and behold, it was not toward him as formerly.
3 Then YEHOWAH said to Jacob, “Turn back to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you.”
4 And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to his flock in the field,
5 and said to them, “I see your father’s countenance, that it is not toward me as formerly, but the Elohim of my father has been with me.
6 You know that with all my strength I have served your father,
7 and your father has cheated me, and changed my wages ten times.  Elohim, however, did not permit him to do me harm.
8 If he said thus, ‘The speckled shall be your wages’, then all the flock brought forth speckled.  And if he said thus, ‘The striped shall be your wages’, then all the flock brought forth striped.
9 And Elohim has taken away your father’s livestock and given to me.
10 And it came to pass at that time, when the flock conceived, that I lifted up my eyes and saw in a dream, and behold, the mating rams were striped, speckled, and mottled.
11 And the angel of Elohim said to me in the dream, ‘Jacob,’ and I said, ‘Here I am,’
12 And He said, ‘Lift up now your eyes and see that all the rams that mount the flock are striped, speckled, and mottled, for I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you.
13 I am the El of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar; where you made a vow to Me.  Now rise up, leave this land, and return to the land of your birth.'”
14 And Rachel and Leah said to him, “Do we still have any portion or inheritance in our father’s house?
15 Are we not considered by him as foreigners? For he has sold us, and has also spent that money.
16 For all the wealth that Elohim has taken away from our father belongs to us and our children.  Now then, do whatever Elohim has said to you.”
17 Then Jacob rose up and set his children and his wives upon camels,
18 and he led away all his livestock and all his goods, which he had gathered; the livestock and goods that he had gathered in Padan-aram, to go to Isaac, his father, in the land of Canaan.
19 When Laban went to shear his flock, Rachel stole the idols that were her father’s.
20 And Jacob deceived Laban the Syrian, by not telling him that he was fleeing.
21 So he fled with all he had, and he arose and crossed the river, and set his face toward the hill country of Gilead.
22 And it was told Laban, on the third day, that Jacob had fled.
23 So he took his brethren with him, and chased after him; a seven days’ journey.  And he overtook him in the hill country of Gilead.
24 And Elohim came to Laban the Syrian in a dream of the night, and said to him, “Take heed that you do not speak to Jacob either good or bad.”
25 Then Laban overtook Jacob.  Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country, so Laban and his kinsmen pitched in the hill country of Gilead.
26 Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done that you have deceived me and carried away my daughters like captives of the sword?
27 Why did you flee away secretly and deceive me, and did not tell me so that I might have sent you away with joy, and with songs; with tambourine, and with harp,
28 and did not permit me to kiss my sons and my daughters? Now you have done foolishly.
29 It is in the power of my hand to do you harm, but the Elohim of your father spoke to me last night, saying, ‘Take heed to not speak either good or bad to Jacob.’
30 And now, because you long greatly for your father’s house, you need to be gone.  Why though, did you steal my elohim?”
31 And Jacob answered and said to Laban, “Because I was afraid, for I thought you would take your daughters from me by force.
32 With whomever you find your elohim, they shall not live.  In the presence of our brethren, point out what is yours among my belongings and take it for yourself.”  For Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them.
33 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent, and into Leah’s tent, and into the tent of the two handmaids, but he found nothing.  Then he went out of Leah’s tent and entered Rachel’s tent.
34 Now Rachel had taken the idols, and put them in a camel’s saddle, and she sat upon them.  And Laban searched the whole tent but found nothing.
35 And she said to her father, “Let it not anger my lord that I cannot rise before you, for the manner of women is upon me.”  So he searched but did not find the idols.
36 Then Jacob grew angry and rebuked Laban, and Jacob said to Laban, “What is my sin? What is my offense that you have hotly pursued me?
37 Though you have searched all my goods, what have you found of all your household goods? Place it here before my brethren and your brethren, that they may decide between us.
38 Twenty years have I been with you.  Your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten the rams of your flock.
39 I did not bring to you anything torn by beast; I bore the loss of it myself.  You required it of my hand, whether stolen by day or stolen by night.
40 Thus it was for me.  By day the heat consumed me, and the frost by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes.
41 Thus have I been twenty years in your house.  I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, and you changed my wages ten times.
42 Had not the Elohim of my father; the Elohim of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac been with me, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed.  Elohim has seen my affliction and the labor of my hands, and He rebuked you last night.”
43 Then Laban responded and said to Jacob, “The daughters are my daughters, and the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks, and all that you see is mine. But what can I do this day to these my daughters, or to their children whom they begot?
44 Now come, let us make a covenant, you and I, and let it be a witness between you and me.”
45 Then Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar.
46 And Jacob said to his brethren, “Gather stones”, so they took stones and made a heap, and they ate there by the heap.
47 Now Laban called it Jager-sahadatha, but Jacob called it Galeed.
48 And Laban said, “This heap is a witness between you and me this day.”  Therefore it was named Galeed,
49 and Mizpah, for he said, “May YEHOWAH watch between you and me when we are absent one from the other.
50 If you harm my daughters, or if you take wives besides my daughters, though no man is with us, see, Elohim is witness between you and me.”
51 Laban said to Jacob, “Behold this heap and behold the pillar that I have set between you and me.
52 This heap is a witness, and the pillar is a witness, that I will not pass by this heap to you, and you will not pass by this heap and this pillar to me, for harm.
53 The Elohim of Abraham and the Elohim of Nahor; the Elohim of their father, judge between us.”  So Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.
54 Then Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain, and called his brethren to eat food, and they ate the food and spent the night on the mountain.
55 And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them.  Then Laban departed and returned to his place.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 32

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 32

And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of Elohim met him.
2 When Jacob saw them he said, “This is Elohim’s camp.”  So he named that place Mahanaim.
3 Then Jacob sent messengers before him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir; the country of Edom.
4 And he commanded them saying, “Thus you shall say to my lord Esau, ‘Thus says your servant Jacob, “I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now.
5 I have oxen and asses and flocks, and male and female servants, and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.”‘”
6 The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau, and he also is coming to meet you; and four hundred men are with him.”
7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed, and he divided the people who were with him, and the flocks and the herds and the camels, into two companies,
8 saying, “If Esau comes to the one company and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape.”
9 And Jacob said, “O Elohim of my father Abraham, and Elohim of my father Isaac, O YEHOWAH, Who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your family, and I will deal well with you,’
10 I am unworthy of all the loving-kindness, and of all the faithfulness that You have shown to Your servant, for with my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two companies.
11 Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother; from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, that he will come and strike me and the mothers with the children.
12 For You said, ‘I will surely deal well with you and make your seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.'”
13 So he remained there that night, and selected from what he had with him a present for his brother Esau:
14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
15 thirty milking camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female asses and ten male asses.
16 And he delivered them into the hands of his servants; every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Go on before me, and put a space between drove and drove.”
17 And he commanded the one in front, saying, “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘to whom do you belong, where are you going, and who do these animals in front of you belong?’
18 you shall say, ‘these are of your servant Jacob.  It is a present sent to my lord Esau.  And behold, he also is behind us.'”
19 He also commanded the second and the third, and all those who followed the droves, saying, “In this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him,
20 and you shall say, ‘Behold, your servant Jacob also is behind us,'” for he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, then afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”
21 So the present went on before him, while he himself remained that night in the camp.
22 And he rose up that same night, and took his two wives, and his two handmaids, and his eleven sons, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and he sent across whatever he had.
24 Then Jacob was left alone.  And a man wrestled with him until daylight.
25 When He saw that He had not prevailed against him, He touched the joint of his thigh; so the joint of Jacob’s thigh was dislocated while he wrestled with Him.
26 Then He said, “Let Me go, for daylight is breaking.”  But he said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me.”
27 And He asked, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.”
28 And He said, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel, for you have wrestled with Elohim, and with men, and have prevailed.”
29 Then Jacob asked and said, “Please tell me Your Name.”  But He said, “Why is it that you ask My Name?”  And He blessed him there.
30 So Jacob named the place Peniel, saying, “I have seen Elohim face to face, and my life has been preserved.”
31 And the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over Peniel, and he was limping on his thigh.
32 Therefore, the children of Israel do not eat the tendon of the hip that is over the joint of the thigh to this day, because He touched the joint of Jacob’s thigh in the tendon of the hip.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 33

Then Jacob lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, Esau was coming; and four hundred men.  So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two handmaids,
2 and he put the handmaids and their children in front, and Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Yehseph last.
3 But he passed on ahead of them and bowed down to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
4 Then Esau ran to meet him and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.
5 And he lifted his eyes and saw the women and the children, and said, “Who are these with you?” And he said, “The children whom Elohim has graciously given your servant.”
6 Then the handmaids came near with their children, and they bowed.
7 Leah likewise came near with her children, and they bowed, and afterward Yehoseph came near with Rachel, and they bowed.
8 And he said, “What do you mean by all these droves that I have met?” And he said, “To find favor in the sight of my lord.”
9 But Esau said, “I have an abundance, my brother.  Keep what you have for your own.”
10 Jacob said, “No, please, if now I have found favor in your sight, then take my present from my hand, for I see your face, as one sees the face of Elohim, and you have received me favorably.
11 Please take my gift, which has been brought to you, because Elohim has dealt graciously with me, and because I have plenty.”  Thus he urged him, and he took.
12 Then Esau said, “Let us take our journey and go, and I will go before you.”
13 But he said to him, “My lord knows that the children are weak and that the flocks and herds that are nursing are a concern to me.  And if they are driven hard one day, all the flocks will die.
14 Please let my lord pass over before his servant, and I will lead on gently at my leisure, according to the pace of the herds that are before me, and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my lord at Seir.”
15 Esau said, “Please let me leave with you some of the men who are with me,” but he said, “What need is there? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.”
16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.
17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built for himself a house and made booths for his herds.  Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.
18 Now Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan-aram, and dwelled before the city.
19 And he bought the piece of land where he had pitched his tent, from the hand of the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for one hundred pieces of money.
20 Then he erected there an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 34

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 34

Now Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she begat to Jacob, went out to visit the daughters of the land,
2 and when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the land, saw her, he took her and lay with her, and defiled her by force.
3 His soul cleaved to Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke caringly to her.
4 So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, “Get me this girl for a wife.”
5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter, but his sons were with his livestock in the field, so Jacob kept silent until they came.
6 And Hamor, the father of Shechem, went out to Jacob to speak with him.
7 Now the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard, and the men were grieved and very angry, because he had done a vile thing in Israel by ravaging Jacob’s daughter, which ought not to be done.
8 But Hamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem desires your daughter.  Please give her to him in marriage.
9 Make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.
10 Thus you shall live with us, and the land shall be before you.  Dwell and trade therein, and acquire possessions in it.”
11 Shechem also said to her father and to her brothers, “If I find favor in your sight, then I will give whatever you ask of to me.
12 Multiply greatly the dowry and gift, and I will give whatever you say to me, but give me the girl in marriage.”
13 But Jacob’s sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor with deceit, because he had defiled Dinah their sister,
14 for they said to them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a reproach to us.
15 Only in this will we consent to you:  If you will be as we, in that every male of you be circumcised.
16 Then will we give our daughters to you, and take your daughters for ourselves, and we will dwell with you and become one people.
17 But if you will not hear us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and depart.”
18 Now their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son.
19 And the young man delayed not to do the thing, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter.  Now he was more honorable than all in his father’s house.
20 And Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city, and spoke to the men of their city, saying,
21 “These men are friendly with us, therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein. Behold, the land is large enough for them.  Let us take their daughters in marriage, and give them our daughters.
22 Only in this will the men consent to us to dwell with us, to become one people: That every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.
23 Will not their livestock, their property, and all their animals be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.”
24 All who passed through the gate of the city listened to Hamor and to his son Shechem, and every male was circumcised; all who passed through the city gate.
25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword and came upon the city boldly, and killed every male.
26 They killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Shechem’s house, and went out.
27 And Jacob’s sons came upon the slain and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.
28 They took their flocks and their oxen and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,
29 and they carried away all their wealth, and all their children and their wives; even all within the houses.
30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me, by making me loathsome to the inhabitants of the land; to the Canaanites and the Perizzites.  And I, being few men in number, they will gather themselves against me, and attack me, and I will be destroyed; I and my household.”
31 But they said, “Should he treat our sister as a whore?”

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 35

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 35

Then Elohim said to Jacob, “Rise, go up to Bethel and dwell there, and make an altar to El, Who appeared to you when you fled from the face of your brother Esau.”
2 So Jacob said to his household, and to all who were with him, “Remove the foreign elohim that are among you, and purify yourselves, and change your clothes,
3 and let us rise and go up to Bethel, and I will make there an altar to El, Who answered me in the day of my distress, and has been with me wherever I have gone.”
4 So they gave to Jacob all the foreign elohim that they had, and the rings that were in their ears, and Jacob hid them under the oak that was near Shechem.
5 And as they journeyed, a great terror of Elohim was upon the cities around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.
6 So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan; he and all the people with him.
7 And he built there an altar, and called the place El-bethel, because Elohim had revealed Himself to him there when he fled from the face of his brother.
8 Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and was buried beneath Bethel, under an oak.  And the name of it was called Allon-bacuth.
9 Then Elohim appeared to Jacob again, when he came out from Padan-aram, and He blessed him.
10 And Elohim said to him, “Your name is Jacob.  You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name.”  Thus He called him Israel.
11 And Elohim said to him, “I am El Almighty.  Be fruitful and multiply.  A nation, and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come forth from your loins.
12 The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I give it to you, and I will give the land to your seed after you.”
13 Then Elohim went up from him in the place where He had talked with him,
14 and Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He had talked with him; a pillar of stone.  And on it he poured out a drink offering; he also poured oil on it.
15 And Jacob called the name of the place where Elohim had spoken with him, Bethel.
16 Then they journeyed from Bethel, and when there was yet some distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel labored in childbirth; and she suffered severe labor.
17 And when she was in hard labor the midwife said to her, “Fear not, for now you have this son also.”
18 And it came to pass, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-oni, but his father called him Benyehmin.
19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).
20 And Jacob set up a pillar over her grave; that is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day.
21 Then Israel journeyed on and pitched his tent on the other side of Migdal-eder.
22 And it came to pass while Israel was dwelling in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine, and Israel heard.  Now there were twelve sons of Jacob;
23 The sons of Leah:  Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, and Simeon and Levi and Yehudah and Issachar and Zebulun.
24 The sons of Rachel:  Yehseph and Benyehmin;
25 and the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s handmaid:  Dan and Naphtali;
26 and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid:  Gad and Asher.  These are the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Padan-aram.
27 And Jacob came to Isaac his father at Mamre, to the city of Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham sojourned; and Isaac.
28 And the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years.
29 And Isaac breathed his last and died, and was gathered unto his people, an old man full of days; and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 36

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 36

Now these are the generations of Esau (who is, Edom):
2 Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan; Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Oholibamah the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite,
3 and Bashemath, Ishmael’s daughter, the sister of Nebajoth.
4 And Adah begat Eliphaz to Esau, and Bashemath begat Reuel,
5 and Oholibamah begat Jeush and Jalam and Korah.  These are the sons of Esau who were born unto him in the land of Canaan.
6 Then Esau took his wives and his sons and his daughters, and all the people of his household, and his cattle and all his beasts, and all his goods that he had acquired in the land of Canaan, and went to a country away from his brother Jacob,
7 for their riches had become too great for them to dwell together; and the land wherein they sojourned could not sustain them, because of their livestock.
8 So Esau dwelled in the hill country of Seir.  Esau is Edom.
9 And these are the generations of Esau, the father of the Edomites, in the hill country of Seir.
10 These are the names of Esau’s sons:  Eliphaz the son of Esau’s wife Adah; Reuel the son of Esau’s wife Bashemath.
11 The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam and Kenaz.
12 And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz, Esau’s son, and she begat Amalek to Eliphaz. These are the sons of Adah, Esau’s wife.
13 These are the sons of Reuel:  Nahath and Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah.  These were the sons of Bashemath, Esau’s wife.
14 These were the sons of Esau’s wife Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon:  She begat unto Esau, Jeush and Jalam and Korah.
15 These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau.  The sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn of Esau, are chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Zepho, chief Kenaz,

18 These are the sons of Esau’s wife Oholibamah:  Chief Jeush, chief Jalam and chief Korah.  These are the chiefs of Esau’s wife Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah.
19 These are the sons of Esau (who is, Edom), and these are their chiefs.
20 These are the sons of Seir the Horite, the inhabitant of the land:  Lotan and Shobal and Zibeon and Anah,
21 and Dishon and Ezer and Dishan.  These are the chiefs descended from the Horites; the sons of Seir in the land of Edom.
22 The sons of Lotan were Hori and Homam, and Lotan’s sister was Timna.
23 These are the sons of Shobal:  Alvan and Manahath and Ebal, Shepho and Onam.
24 These are the sons of Zibeon:  Ajah and Anah – This is the Anah that found the warm springs in the wilderness, when he was pasturing the asses of his father Zibeon.
25 These are the children of Anah:  Dishon, and Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah.
26 These are the sons of Dishon:  Hemdan and Eshban and Ithran and Cheran.

29 These are the chiefs of the Horites:  Chief Lotan, chief Shobal, chief Zibeon, chief Anah,
30 chief Dishon, chief Ezer, chief Dishan.  These are the chiefs of the Horites, according to their various chiefs in the land of Seir.
31 Now these are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before a king reigned over the sons of Israel.
32 Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom, and the name of his city was Dinhabah.
33 And Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place.
34 And Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his stead.
35 And Husham died, and Hadad, the son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his stead.  And the name of his city was Avith.
36 And Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his stead.
37 And Samlah died, and Shaul of Rehoboth, by the river, reigned in his stead.
38 And Shaul died, and Baal-hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his stead.
39 And Baal-hanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his stead.  And the name of his city was Pau, and his wife’s name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, daughter of Mezahab.
40 And these are the names of the chiefs of Esau, according to their families and their countries; by their names:  Chief Timna, chief Alvah, chief Jetheth,
41 chief Oholibamah, chief Elah, chief Pinon,
42 chief Kenaz, chief Teman, chief Mibzar,
43 chief Magdiel, chief Iram.  These are the chiefs of Edom according to their dwelling places in the land of their possession.  This is Esau, the father of Edom.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 37

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 37

And Jacob dwelled in the land where his father had sojourned; in the land of Canaan.
2 These are the generations of Jacob:  Yehseph, being seventeen years of age, was feeding the flock with his brothers, and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah; his father’s wives.   And Yehseph brought to his father an evil report about them.
3 Now Israel loved Yehseph more than all his sons, because he was the son of his old age.  And he made him a coat of many colors.
4 And his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.
5 And Yehseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him even more.
6 He said to them, “Listen, please, to this dream that I dreamed:
7 Behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and lo, my sheaf rose up and also stood upright; and behold, your sheaves, surrounding it, bowing down to my sheaf.”
8 Then his brothers said to him, “Will you indeed be king over us? Or will you really have dominion over us?” And they hated him yet more for his dreams and for his words.
9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told his brothers, and said, “Lo, I have had yet another dream:  Behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”
10 And he told his father and his brothers, and his father rebuked him saying, “What is this dream you have had? Shall I and your mother, and your brothers, indeed, come to bow down ourselves to you to the ground?”
11 And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying.
12 Then his brothers went to pasture their father’s flock in Shechem.
13 And Israel said to Yehseph, “Do not your brothers pasture in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them.” And he said to him, “Here I am.”
14 Then he said to him, “Go now, please, and see about the welfare of your brothers, and the welfare of the flock, and bring word back to me.”  So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
15 And a man found him, for behold, he was wandering in a field.  And the man asked him, “What do you seek?”
16 And he said, “I seek my brothers.  Please tell me where they are pasturing.”
17 Then the man said, “They have departed from here, and I heard it said, ‘Let us go to Dothan.'”  So Yehseph went after his brothers, and found them at Dothan.
18 When they saw him far off, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him, to put him to death.
19 And they said to one another, “Behold, this dreamer who comes!
20 Come now, therefore, and let us kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, ‘An evil beast devoured him.’  Then let us see what will become of his dreams!”
21 But Reuben heard and delivered him out of their hands, and said, “Let us not kill him.”
22 Reuben further said to them, “Shed no blood.  Cast him into this pit, which is in the wilderness, but do not lay hands on him”; that he might deliver him out of their hands, to bring him back to his father.
23 And it came to pass, when Yehseph came to his brothers, that they stripped Yehseph of the coat of many colors that was on him,
24 and they took him and cast him into the pit.  And the pit was empty; without any water.
25 And they sat down to eat food.  And they lifted their eyes and looked, and behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites from Gilead, with their camels bearing spices and balm and myrrh, going down to Egypt.
26 And Yehudah said to his brothers, “What profit is it to kill our brother and conceal his blood?
27 Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hands be upon him, for he is our brother; our flesh.”  And his brothers listened.
28 Then some Midianite merchants passed by, so they pulled and lifted Yehseph out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty silver pieces, and they brought Yehseph to Egypt.
29 Now Reuben returned to the pit, and behold, Yehseph was not in the pit, so he tore his garments.
30 And he returned to his brothers and said, “The boy is not; and I, where shall I go?”
31 And they took Yehseph’s coat, and killed a male goat and dipped the coat in its blood,
32 and they sent the coat of many colors and brought it to their father and said, “We found this.  Please determine whether it is your son’s coat or not.”
33 And he examined it and said, “It is my son’s coat.  An evil beast has devoured him; Yehseph has without doubt been torn to pieces!”
34 And Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth on his loins, and mourned for his son many days.
35 And all his sons, and all his daughters, rose to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted.  And he said, “Surely I will go down to the grave in mourning for my son.” Thus his father wept for him.
36 And the Midianites sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, Pharaoh’s officer, and captain of the guard.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 38

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 38

And it came to pass at that time, that Yehudah went down from his brothers and visited a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.
2 And Yehudah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shua, and he took her and went in to her.
3 And she conceived and begat a son, and his name was called Er.
4 And she conceived again and begat a son, and named him Onan.
5 And she yet again conceived and begat a son, and called his named Shelah.  And he was at Chezib when she begat him.
6 And Yehudah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.
7 But Er, Yehudah’s firstborn, was evil in the sight of YEHOWAH, so YEHOWAH killed him.
8 Then Yehudah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and fulfill to her the duty of a husbands brother, and raise up seed to your brother.”
9 But Onan knew that the seed would not be his, so when he went in to his brother’s wife, he spilled on the ground in order not to give seed to his brother.
10 But what he did was grievous in the eye of YEHOWAH, so He killed him also.
11 Then Yehudah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow in your father’s house until my son Shelah is grown”, for he thought that he too may die like his brothers. So Tamar went and dwelled in her father’s house.
12 Now after much time the daughter of Shua, Yehudah’s wife, died, and Yehudah was comforted and went up to his sheep shearers at Timnah; he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
13 And it was told to Tamar, “Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”
14 So she took off her widow’s garments and concealed herself with a veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the entry of Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah, for she saw that Shelah had grown up, and she had not been given to him as a wife.
15 When Yehudah saw her, he thought her a whore, for she had covered her face.
16 And he turned aside to her by the road, and said, “Come now, please, and let me come in to you”, for he knew not that she was his daughter-in-law.  And she said, “What will you give me, that you may come unto me?”
17 And he said, therefore, “I will send you a young she-goat from the flock.”  She said, “Will you give a pledge until you send it?”
18 He said, “What pledge shall I give you?” And she said, “Your signet ring, your bracelet and the staff that is in your hand.”  So he gave to her and went in to her, and she conceived by him.
19 And she rose and departed, and removed her veil, and put on the garments of a widow.
20 When Yehudah sent the young she-goat by his friend the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand, he found her not.
21 And he asked the men of her place, saying, “Where is the whore who was by the road at Enaim?” But they said, “There has been no whore here.”
22 So he returned to Yehudah, and said, “I did not find her.  And furthermore, the men of the place said, ‘There has been no whore here.'”
23 Then Yehudah said, “Let her take them, otherwise I will become shamed.  After all, I sent this young she-goat, but you did not find her.”
24 And it came to pass, about three months later, that it was told to Yehudah, saying, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has played the whore, and behold, she is also with child by whoredom.”  Then Yehudah said, “Bring her out and let her be burned!”
25 When she was brought forth she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “I am with child by the man to whom these belong.” And she said, “Please examine and see whose signet ring and bracelet and staff are these?”
26 And Yehudah, discerning, said “She is more righteous than I, because I did not give her to my son Shelah.”  And he knew her again no more.
27 And it came to pass at the time of delivery, that behold, twins were in her womb.
28 And it came to pass, when she bore, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “This came out first.”
29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that behold, his brother came out. Then she said, “What a breach you have made for yourself!”  So he was named Perez.
30 And afterward his brother came out, who had the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was called Zerah.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 39

And Yehseph had been taken down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh; the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there.
2 And YEHOWAH was with Yehseph, so he became a prosperous man.  And he was in the house of his lord, the Egyptian.
3 And his lord saw that YEHOWAH was with him, and that YEHOWAH made all he did to prosper in his hand.
4 So Yehseph found favor in his sight, and became his attendant, and made him overseer over his house.  And all that he had he put in his charge.
5 And it came to pass, from the time he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he owned, YEHOWAH blessed the Egyptian’s house on account of Yehseph.  And YEHOWAH’S blessing was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field.
6 And he left everything in Yehseph’s hand, and with him, he did not worry himself with anything except the food that he ate.  Now Yehseph was handsome in form and appearance,
7 and it came to pass after these things, that his lord’s wife cast her eyes upon Yehseph, and she said, “Lie down with me.”
8 But he refused, and said to his lord’s wife, “Behold, with me, my lord does not worry himself with anything in the house, and he has placed all that he owns in my hand.
9 There is none greater in this house than I, and he has not withheld anything from me, but you, because you are his wife.  How then could I do this great evil, and sin against Elohim?”
10 And it came to pass as she spoke to Yehseph day by day, and he did not listen to her, to lie down beside her or be with her,
11 that on a certain day, when he went into the house to do business, and none of the men of the house were there in the house,
12 that she caught him by his garment and said, “Lie down with me!”  But he left his garment in her hand and fled; and went outside.
13 And when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and had fled outside,
14 she called to the men of her house and said to them, “See, he has brought in a Hebrew to us, to make sport of us.  He came in to me, to lie down with me, and I screamed.
15 And when he heard that I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment with me, and fled, and went outside.”
16 And she laid his garment beside her until his lord came home.
17 And she spoke to him according to these words, “The Hebrew servant, whom you brought to us, came in to me, to make sport of me.
18 But as I raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment with me and fled outside.”
19 When his lord heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, “This is what your servant did to me,” his wrath was kindled.
20 And Yehseph’s lord took him and put him into the prison-house, where the king’s prisoners were kept; and he was there in the prison-house.
21 But YEHOWAH was with Yehseph, and extended loving-kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison-house.
22 And the keeper of the prison-house committed to Yehseph’s hand all the prisoners in the prison-house, so that whatever was done there, he did.
23 And the keeper of the prison-house did not look upon anything under his hand, because YEHOWAH was with him.  And whatever he did, YEHOWAH made it prosper.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 40

And it came to pass after these things, the cup-bearer of the king of Egypt, and the baker, offended their lord, the king of Egypt.
2 And Pharaoh was outraged with his two officers; the chief cup-bearer, and the chief baker.
3 So he imprisoned them in the house of the captain of the guard; in the prison-house, the place where Yehseph was imprisoned.
4 And the captain of the guard appointed Yehseph to them, and he served them, and they remained guarded for some time.
5 And the cup-bearer and the baker for the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison-house, each dreamed a dream, both of them in one night; each his dream, and each according to the interpretation of his dream.
6 And when Yehseph came to them in the morning and saw them, behold, they were sad.
7 And he asked Pharaoh’s officials, who were imprisoned with him in his lord’s house, “Why are your faces so sad today?”
8 Then they said to him, “We have dreamed a dream and there is no interpreter of it.” And Yehoseph said to them, “Interpretations belong to Elohim!  Tell me, please.”
9 So the chief cup-bearer told his dream to Yehseph, and said to him, “In my dream, behold, a vine before me.
10 And on the vine, three branches.  And it budded, and blossomed, and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes.
11 And Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.”
12 And Yehseph said to him, “This is the interpretation of it:  The three branches are three days.
13 Yet in three more days, Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your office, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup into his hand according to your former manner; when you were his cup-bearer.
14 Only remember me when it goes well with you, and please do me a kindness, and make mention of me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this house.
15 For I was indeed carried away from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing that they should have put me into the dungeon.”
16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Yehseph, “I also was in my dream, and behold, three baskets of white bread on my head.
17 And in the uppermost basket was all manner of baked food for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head.”
18 And Yehseph answered and said, “This is the interpretation of it:  The three baskets are three days.
19 Yet in three more days Pharaoh will lift up your head from off you, and will hang you on a tree, and the birds will eat your flesh from off you.”
20 And it came to pass on the third day, Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants.  And he lifted up the head of the chief cup-bearer, and the head of the chief baker among his servants.
21 And he restored the chief cup-bearer to his office, and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand,
22 but he hanged the chief baker, just as Yehseph had interpreted to them.
23 Yet the chief cup-bearer did not remember Yehseph, but forgot him.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 41

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 41

And it came to pass, at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh had a dream, and behold, he was standing by the river.
2 And lo, there came up out of the river seven cows; beautiful and fat, and they grazed in the meadow.
3 And behold, seven other cows came up after them from the river; ugly and lean-fleshed, and they stood by the other cows on the bank of the river.
4 And the ugly and lean-fleshed cows ate up the seven beautiful and fat cows.  So Pharaoh awoke.
5 He fell asleep and dreamed the second time, and behold, seven ears of corn came up on a single stalk; plump and good.
6 Then behold, seven ears; thin and scorched by the east wind, sprouted up after them.
7 And the thin ears ate up the seven plump and good ears.  And Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream.
8 In the morning his spirit was troubled, so he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men therein.  And Pharaoh told them his dreams, but none could interpret them to Pharaoh.
9 Then spoke the chief cup-bearer to Pharaoh, saying, “I remember my offenses this day!
10 Pharaoh was outraged with his servants, and he imprisoned me in the house of the captain of the guard; me and the chief baker.
11 And we dreamed dreams on the same night, he and I; each of us dreamed according to the interpretation of his dream.
12 And there was with us a Hebrew youth; a servant of the captain of the guard, and we told to him, and he interpreted our dreams for us.  To each he interpreted according to his dream.
13 And it came to pass, just as he interpreted for us, so it happened.  He restored me in my office, but he hanged him.”
14 Then Pharaoh sent and called for Yehseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon.  And when he had shaved and changed his clothes, he came unto Pharaoh.
15 And Pharaoh said to Yehseph, “I have dreamed a dream, but no one can interpret it.  I have heard it said of you, that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.”
16 And Yehseph answered Pharaoh, saying, “It is not in me.  Elohim will give Pharaoh a complete answer.”
17 And Pharaoh said to Yehseph, “In my dream, behold, I was standing on the bank of the river;
18 and behold, seven cows, beautiful and fat came up out of the river, and they grazed in the meadow.
19 And behold, seven other cows came up after them; weak and very ugly and lean-fleshed, such as I had never seen be so bad in all the land of Egypt.
20 And the lean-fleshed and ugly cows ate up the first seven fat cows.
21 Yet when they had eaten them up, it could not be perceived that they had eaten them up, for they were just as ugly as before.  Then I awoke.
22 And I saw in my dream, behold, seven ears of corn, plump and good, came up on a single stalk.
23 And lo, seven ears, withered, thin and scorched by the east wind, sprouted up after them.
24 And the thin ears ate up the seven good ears.  And I told it to the magicians, but there was none to explain it to me.”
25 And Yehseph said to Pharaoh, “The dreams of Pharaoh are one.  Elohim has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do.
26 The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good ears are seven years.  The dreams are one.
27 And the seven lean-fleshed and ugly cows, that came up after them, are seven years, and the seven thin ears, scorched by the east wind, shall be seven years of famine.
28 It is as I have said to Pharaoh, Elohim has shown to Pharaoh what He is about to do.
29 Behold, there come seven years of great abundance in all the land of Egypt,
30 and there will come after them seven years of famine, and all the abundance will be forgotten in the land of Egypt, and the famine will consume the land.
31 And the abundance will not be remembered in the land, because of the famine, for it will be very severe.
32 As for the repeating of the dream to Pharaoh twice, it means that Elohim has determined the matter, and Elohim will quickly bring it to pass.
33 Now, therefore, let Pharaoh look for a man, discerning and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt.
34 Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint overseers over the land, and let him tax a fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven years of abundance.
35 And let them gather all the food of the good years that are coming, and store up the grain under the hand of Pharaoh, for food in the cities, and let them guard it.
36 And that food shall become a store for the land, for the seven years of famine, which will occur in the land of Egypt; that the land not perish through the famine.”
37 And the matter was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants.
38 And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find one as this; a man in whom is The Spirit of Elohim?”
39 And Pharaoh said to Yehseph, “For as much as Elohim has made all this known to you, there is none so discerning and wise as you.
40 You shall be over my house, and according to your command all my people shall do. Only in the throne will I will be greater than you.”
41 And Pharaoh said unto Yehseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.”
42 Then Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it on Yehseph’s hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen, and put a gold necklace around his neck.
43 And he made him to ride in his second chariot, and they proclaimed before him, “Bow the knee!” And he set him over all the land of Egypt.
44 And Pharaoh said unto Yehseph, “I am Pharaoh, yet without you shall no man raise his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.”
45 And Pharaoh named Yehseph, Zaphenath-paneah, and he gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potipherah, priest of On, as his wife.  And Yehseph went out over all the land of Egypt.
46 And Yehseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh, king of Egypt.  And Yehseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and passed through all the land of Egypt.
47 And in the seven years of plenty the land brought forth by handfuls.
48 And he gathered all the food for the seven years, which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities; he placed in every city the food from around that city.
49 Thus Yehseph gathered grain as the sand of the sea; in great abundance, until he stopped measuring, for it was beyond measure.
50 And unto Yehseph were born two sons, before the year of famine came, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potipherah priest of On, begat to him.
51 Yehseph named the firstborn Manasseh, “For, Elohim has made me forget all my sorrow and all my father’s household.”
52 And he named the second Ephraim, “For, Elohim has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”
53 And when the seven years of plenty, which had been in the land of Egypt, came to an end,
54 and the seven years of famine began to come, according as Yehseph had said, then there was famine in all the lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was food.
55 And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried out to Pharaoh for food, and Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, “Go to Yehseph; what he says to you, do.”
56 When the famine was over all the face of the earth, Yehseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine was severe in the land of Egypt.
57 And all the earth came to Egypt to buy grain from Yehseph, because the famine was severe in all the earth.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 42

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 42

Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, “Why do you look, one upon another?”
2 And he said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt.  Go down there and buy for us from that place, so that we may live and not die.”
3 Then ten brothers of Yehseph went down to buy grain from Egypt.
4 But Benyehmin, Yehseph’s brother, Jacob did not send with his brothers, for he said, “Lest harm befall him.”
5 So the sons of Israel came to buy grain among those who also came, for the famine was also in the land of Canaan.
6 And Yehseph governed the land; and it was he who sold to all the people of the land. And Yehseph’s brothers came and bowed down to him, with faces to the ground.
7 When Yehseph saw his brothers he recognized them, but he estranged himself from them and spoke severely to them.  And he said to them, “From where have you come?” And they said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.”
8 But Yehseph recognized his brothers, although they recognized him not.
9 And Yehseph remembered the dreams he had about them, and said to them, “You are spies come to look at the nakedness of our land.”
10 But they said to him, “No, my lord, your servants have come to buy food.
11 We are all one man’s sons; honestly, your servants are not spies.”
12 Yet he said to them, “No, but you have come to look at the nakedness of our land!”
13 And they said, “Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man, in the land of Canaan.  And behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.”
14 Yehseph said to them, “It is as I said, you are spies.
15 By this you will be tested:  By the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go out from this place unless your youngest brother comes here!
16 Send one of you that he may bring your brother, while you remain in bonds, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you.  And if not, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies.”
17 So he imprisoned them all together for three days.
18 And Yehseph said to them on the third day, “Do this and live, for I fear Elohim:
19 If you are honest men, let one of your brothers remain in bonds in your prison, but go you, carry grain for the famine of your households,
20 and bring your youngest brother to me, so your words may be verified, and you will not die.”  And they did so.
21 Then they said to one another, “We are indeed guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the anguish of his soul when he entreated our mercy.  Yet we would not listen, therefore this distress has come upon us.”
22 Reuben answered them, saying, “Did I not tell you, ‘Do not sin against the boy’; and you would not listen? Now behold, his blood also is required.”
23 And they knew not that Yehseph understood, for there was an interpreter between them.
24 And he turned away from them and wept, but returning to them he spoke to them, and took Simeon from them, and bound him before their eyes.
25 Then Yehseph commanded that their sacks be filled with grain, and that every man’s money be restored to his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey.  And thus it was done.
26 So they loaded their asses with their grain and departed from there.
27 And as one opened his sack, at the inn, to give fodder to the asses, he saw his money. And behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.
28 And he said to his brothers, “My money has been returned, and behold, it is even in my sack.”  And with hearts racing, they, trembling, one to one another, said, “What is this that Elohim has done to us?”
29 And they came unto Jacob their father, in the land of Canaan, and told him all that had happened to them, saying,
30 “The man, the lord of the land, spoke severely with us, and took us for spies of the country.
31 But we said to him, ‘Honestly, we are not spies.
32 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.’
33 And the man, the lord of the land, said unto us, ‘by this I will know the truth:  Leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for the famine of your households, and go.
34 But bring your youngest brother to me, that I may know that you are not spies, but true. And I will give your brother to you, and you may trade in the land.'”
35 And it came to pass, as they emptied their sacks, that behold, every man’s bundle of money in his sack.  And when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were fearful.
36 And Jacob their father said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children! Yehseph is not, and Simeon is not; and you would take Benyehmin?  All these things are against me.”
37 And Reuben spoke to his father, saying, “Slay my two sons, if I do not bring him back to you.  Give him into my hand, and I will bring him back to you.”
38 But he said, “My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left.  If harm befalls him on the journey you are taking, then you will bring my gray hair down to the grave in sorrow.”

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 43

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 43

And the famine was severe in the land.
2 And it came to pass, when they had finished eating the grain that they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, “Go back and buy us a little food.”
3 And Yehudah spoke to him, saying, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.’
4 If you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.
5 But if you do not send, we will not go down, for the man said to us, ‘You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.'”
6 Then Israel said, “Why did you deal so ill with me, by telling the man whether you had yet a brother?”
7 And they said, “The man inquired straightly about our family, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Have you a brother?’ And we told him according to the manner of his words.  Could we know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down’?”
8 Yehudah said to his father Israel, “Send the lad with me and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die; both we and you and our little ones.
9 I will be surety for him.  Of my hand you shall require him.  If I bring him not unto you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame.
10 For had we not delayed, surely by now we could have returned twice.”
11 And their father Israel said to them, “If so, then do this:  Take some of the best fruit of the land in your sacks, and carry down to the man as a gift:  A little balm, and a little honey, spices and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds.
12 And take other money in your hand, and the money that was returned to you in the mouth of your sacks.  Maybe it was an error.
13 Take your brother also, and rise, return to the man,
14 and may El Almighty give you mercy before the man, so that he will release to you your other brother and Benyehmin.  And if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.”
15 And the men took the gift, and they took double money in their hand, and Benyehmin, and they rose up and went down to Egypt, and stood before Yehseph.
16 And when Yehseph saw Benyehmin with them, he said to his steward, “Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal and make ready, for the men shall eat with me at noon.”
17 And the man did as Yehseph said, and brought the men to Yehseph’s house.
18 And the men were fearful, because they were brought to Yehseph’s house.  And they said, “Because of the money that was returned in our sacks the first time, we are being brought in, that he may seek occasion against us and fall upon us, and take us as servants, with our asses.”
19 So they came near to Yehseph’s steward, and spoke to him at the entrance of the house,
20 and said, “Oh, my lord, we indeed came down the first time to buy food,
21 and it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and behold, each man’s money was in the mouth of his sack; our money in full weight.  And we have brought it back in our hand.
22 And we have brought down other money in our hand to buy food.  We do not know who put our money in our sacks.”
23 He said, “Peace to you!  Fear not.  Your Elohim, and the Elohim of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks.  I had your money!”  And he brought Simeon out to them.
24 And the man brought the men into Yehseph’s house and gave them water, and they washed their feet, and he gave fodder to their asses.
25 So they made ready the gift for Yehseph’s coming at noon, for they heard that they were to eat a meal there.
26 And when Yehseph came home, they brought him the gift that was in their hand, and bowed to the ground before him.
27 And he asked them of their welfare, and said, “Is your father well; the old man of whom you spoke? Is he yet alive?”
28 They said, “Your servant our father is well.  He is still alive.” And they bowed down their heads in homage.
29 And he lifted his eyes and saw his brother Benyehmin, his mother’s son, and he said, “Is this your younger brother, of whom you spoke to me?” And he said, “May Elohim be gracious to you, my son.”
30 And Yehseph hurried away, for his compassion burned for his brother, and he sought to weep; and entered his chamber and wept there.
31 Then he washed his face and came out, and restraining himself, he and said, “Serve the meal.”
32 And they served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians could not eat with the Hebrews, for that is abominable to the Egyptians.
33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth, and the men marveled, one at the other.
34 And he took gifts to them from before him, but Benyehmin’s gift was five times as much as any of theirs.  So they drank and were merry with him.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 44

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 44

And he commanded his steward, saying, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in the mouth of his sack.
2 And put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, and his grain-money.”  And he did as Yehseph said.
3 At dawn the men were sent away; they with their asses.
4 And they had gone out of the city, not far off, when Yehseph said to his steward, “Up, follow after the men.  And when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you returned evil for good?
5 Is not this the one from which my lord drinks, and which he indeed uses for divination? You have done evil in doing this.'”
6 And he overtook them and spoke these words to them.
7 And they said to him, “Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing.
8 Behold, the money we found in the mouth of our sacks we have brought back to you from the land of Canaan.  How then should we steal silver or gold from your lord’s house?
9 With whomever of your servants it is found, let him die, and we also will be my lord’s servants.”
10 So he said, “Now let it also be according to your words.  He with whom it is found shall be my servant, but you shall be innocent.”
11 And they quickly laid down each man’s sack to the ground, and each man opened his sack.
12 And he searched, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest, and the cup was found in Benyehmin’s sack.
13 Then they tore their clothes, and when each man loaded his ass, they returned to the city.
14 And Yehudah and his brothers came to Yehseph’s house, for he was still there, and they fell before him to the ground.
15 And Yehseph said to them, “What is this deed that you have done? Do you not know that such a man as I can certainly divine?”
16 And Yehudah said, “What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we clear ourselves? Elohim has found out the iniquity of your servants.  Behold, we are my lord’s slaves, both we and the one in whose possession the cup has been found.”
17 But he said, “Far be it from me to do this.  The man in whose possession the cup has been found, he shall be my servant, but as for you, go up in peace to your father.”
18 Then Yehudah came near unto him, and said, “Oh my lord, may your servant please speak a word in my lord’s ears, and do not be angry with your servant, for you are as Pharaoh.
19 My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father or a brother?’
20 We said to my lord, ‘we have an aged father, and a little child born unto him in his old age.  Now his brother is dead, so he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.’
21 And you said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me that I may set my eyes on him.’
22 But we said to my lord, ‘The lad cannot leave his father, for if he should leave, his father would die.’
23 And you said to your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’
24 And it came to pass when we went up to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.
25 And our father said, ‘Go back, buy us a little food.’
26 But we said, ‘we cannot go down.  If our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down, for we cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’
27 And your servant my father said to us, ‘you know that my wife bore me two sons,
28 and the one went out from me, and I said, “Surely he is torn in pieces,” and I have not seen him since.
29 If you take this one also from me, and harm befalls him, you will bring my gray hair down to the grave in sorrow.’
30 Now, therefore, when I come to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us, since his life is bound up in the lad’s life,
31 it will come to pass, when he sees that the lad is not, that he will die.  Thus your servants will bring the gray hair of your servant our father down to his grave in sorrow.
32 For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, ‘If I do not bring him to you, then let me bear the blame before my father forever.’
33 Now, therefore, please let your servant remain in bondage to my lord, instead of the lad, and let the lad go up with his brothers.
34 For how shall I go up to my father if the lad is not with me – for fear that I will see the evil that would overtake my father?”

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 45

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 45

Then Yehseph could not restrain himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried-out, “Cause every man to go out from me.”  So there was no man with him when Yehseph made himself known to his brothers.
2 And he wept aloud, and the Egyptians heard; and the household of Pharaoh heard.
3 And Yehseph said to his brothers, “I am Yehseph!  Is my father still alive?” But his brothers could not answer him, for they trembled inwardly in his presence.
4 And Yehseph said to his brothers, “Please come near to me.”  And they came near.  And he said, “I am Yehseph your brother, whom you sold into Egypt.
5 Now, therefore, be not grieved or angry with yourselves, that you sold me here, for Elohim sent me before you to preserve life.
6 For these two years famine has been in the land, and yet five more years will be, in which there is neither plowing nor harvesting.
7 Elohim sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.
8 Therefore, it was not you who sent me here, but Elohim.  And He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his household, and ruler over all the land of Egypt.
9 Quickly, go up to my father, and say to him, ‘Thus says your son Yehseph, “Elohim has made me lord of all Egypt.  Come down to me, tarry not.
10 And you shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me; you and your children, and your children’s children, and your flocks and your herds, and all that you have.
11 And there I will also sustain you, for there are yet five years of famine, unless you and your household and all that you have become impoverished.”‘
12 Behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benyehmin, that it is my mouth that speaks to you.
13 And you shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and all that you have seen.  And you must quickly bring my father down here.”
14 And he fell on his brother Benyehmin’s neck and wept, and Benyehmin wept on his neck.
15 Moreover, he kissed all his brothers and wept on them, and after that his brothers talked with him.
16 And when the report was heard in Pharaoh’s house, that Yehseph’s brothers had come, it pleased Pharaoh very much; and his servants.
17 And Pharaoh told Yehseph, “Say to your brothers, ‘Do this:  Load your beasts and go to the land of Canaan,
18 and bring your father, and your households, and come to me.  And I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you will eat the fat of the land.’
19 Now you are ordered, ‘Do this, take wagons from the land of Egypt for your little ones and for your wives, and bring your father and come.
20 And regard not your things, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.'”
21 And the sons of Israel did so.  And Yehseph gave them wagons according to the command of Pharaoh, and gave them provisions for the journey.
22 To each of them he gave a change of clothes, but to Benyehmin he gave three hundred pieces silver, and five changes of clothes.
23 And to his father he sent this:  Ten he-asses loaded with the good things of Egypt, and ten she-asses loaded with grain and bread and food for his father on the journey.
24 So he sent his brothers away, and they departed, and he said to them, “Do not quarrel on the way.”
25 And they went up from Egypt, and came to the land of Canaan; to their father Jacob.
26 And they told him, saying, “Yehseph is still alive, and indeed, he is ruler over all the land of Egypt.”  But Jacob’s heart fainted, for he did not believe them.
27 But when they told him all the words that Yehseph had spoken to them, and when he saw the wagons that Yehseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of their father Jacob revived.
28 And Israel said, “It is enough!  Yehseph my son is yet alive.  I will go and see him before I die.”

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 46

GENESIS : CHAPTER 46

So Israel journeyed forth with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the Elohim of his father Isaac.
2 And Elohim spoke to Israel in visions of the night and said, “Jacob, Jacob.” And he said, “Here I am.”
3 And He said, “I am El, the Elohim of your father.  Fear not to go down into Egypt, for there I will make you a great nation.
4 I will go down with you into Egypt, and I will also surely bring you up.  And Yehseph shall put his hand upon your eyes.”
5 And Jacob rose up from Beersheba, and the sons of Israel carried their father, and their little ones, and their wives in the wagons that Pharaoh had sent to carry him.
6 They took their livestock and their goods, which they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and came to Egypt; Jacob and all his seed with him:
7 His sons and his sons’ sons with him, his daughters and his sons’ daughters; and all his seed he brought with him to Egypt.
8 And these are the names of the sons of Israel, Jacob and his sons, who went to Egypt:  Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn –
9 and the sons of Reuben:  Hanoch and Phallu and Hezron and Carmi.
10 Simeon – and the sons of Simeon:  Jemuel and Jamin and Ohad and Jachin and Zohar and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman.
11 Levi – and the sons of Levi:  Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
12 Yehudah – and the sons of Yehudah:  Er and Onan and Shelah and Perez and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan).  And the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
13 Issachar – and the sons of Issachar:  Tola and Phuvah and Job and Shimron.
14 Zebulun – and the sons of Zebulun:  Sered and Elon and Jahleel.
15 These are the sons of Leah, whom she begat to Jacob in Padan-aram, with his daughter Dinah; all his sons and his daughters were thirty-three.
16 Gad – and the sons of Gad:  Ziphion and Haggi, Shuni and Ezbon, Eryeh and Arodi and Areli.
17 Asher – and the sons of Asher:  Imnah and Isvah and Jishvi and Beriah, and their sister Serah.  And the sons of Beriah:  Heber and Malchiel.
18 These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah; and she begat to Jacob these sixteen souls.
19 The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel:  Yehseph and Benyehmin.
20 And unto Yehseph in the land of Egypt were begot Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potipherah, priest of On, begat to him.
21 Benyehmin – and the sons of Benyehmin:  Bela and Becher and Ashbel, Gera and Naaman, Ehi and Rosh, Muppim and Huppim and Ard.
22 These are the sons of Rachel, who were begot unto Jacob; fourteen souls in all.
23 Dan – and the son of Dan:  Hushim.
24 Naphtali – and the sons of Naphtali:  Jahzeel and Guni and Jezer and Shillem.
25 These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel, and she begat these unto Jacob; seven souls in all.
26 All the souls that came with Jacob to Egypt; who came out of his loins, not including Jacob’s sons’ wives, sixty-six souls in all,
27 and the sons of Yehseph, who were begot to him in Egypt were two.  All the souls of the house of Jacob, who came to Egypt, seventy.
28 Now he sent Yehudah before him to Yehseph, to point the way to Goshen, and they came into the land of Goshen.
29 And Yehseph prepared his chariot and went up to Goshen to meet Israel his father, and presented himself to him, and he fell on his neck and wept on his neck a long while.
30 Then Israel said to Yehseph, “Now let me die, since I have seen your face; since you are still alive.”
31 And Yehseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and tell Pharaoh, and will say to him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me.
32 And the men are shepherds, for they have been stewards of livestock, and they have brought their flocks and their herds, and all that they have.’
33 And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh calls you and says, ‘What is your occupation?’
34 you shall say, ‘Your servants have been stewards of livestock from our youth even until now; both we and our fathers,’ that you may dwell in the land of Goshen.  For every shepherd is abominable to the Egyptians.”

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 47

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 47

Then Yehseph went in and told Pharaoh, and said, “My father and my brothers and their flocks and their herds and all that they have, have come out of the land of Canaan.  And behold, they are in the land of Goshen.”
2 And he took from among his brothers, five men, and presented them to Pharaoh.
3 And Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your occupation?” So they said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are shepherds; both we and our fathers.”
4 Moreover, they said to Pharaoh, “We have come to sojourn in the land, for your servants have no pasture for the flocks, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now, therefore, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.”
5 And Pharaoh said to Yehseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you.
6 The land of Egypt is before you.  In the best of the land settle your father and your brothers; let them dwell in the land of Goshen.  And if you know any able men among them, then make them stewards of my livestock.”
7 Then Yehseph brought his father Jacob, and presented him to Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.
8 And Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How many years have you lived?”
9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my sojourning are one hundred and thirty years; few and unpleasant have been the years of my life.  Nor do they attain to the days of the years of the life of my fathers, in the days of their sojourning.”
10 And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from his presence.
11 So Yehseph settled his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt; in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.
12 And Yehseph provided his father, and his brothers, and all his father’s household with food, according to their families.
13 Now there was no food in all the land, because the famine was very severe, so that the land of Egypt, and the land of Canaan, languished because of the famine.
14 And Yehseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, for the grain that they bought.  And Yehseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house.
15 When the money was spent in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Yehseph and said, “Give us food, for why should we die in your presence? For the money is gone.”
16 And Yehseph said, “Give up your livestock, and I will give you for your livestock, since the money is gone.”
17 So they brought their livestock to Yehseph, and Yehseph gave them food in exchange for the horses, and the flocks, and the herds, and the asses, and he fed them with food in exchange for all their livestock that year.
18 When that year was ended, they came to him the second year and said to him, “We will not hide from my lord that the money is spent, and the livestock are my lord ‘s. There is nothing left before my lord except our bodies and our lands.
19 Why should we die before your eyes; both we, and our land? Buy us and our land for food, and we, and our land, will be servants unto Pharaoh.  So give us seed, that we may live and not die, and that the land may not be desolate.”
20 So Yehseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for every Egyptian sold his field, because the famine prevailed over them.  So the land became Pharaoh’s.
21 And as for the people, he removed them to the cities, from one end of Egypt’s border to the other end.
22 Only the land of the priests he did not buy, for the priests had a portion from Pharaoh, and they lived off the portion that Pharaoh gave them.  So they did not sell their land.
23 And Yehseph said to the people, “Behold, I have bought you this day, and your land, for Pharaoh.  Behold, here is seed for you, that you may sow the land.
24 And it shall come to pass, in the increase, that you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four-fifths shall be your own for seed of the field, and for your food, and for those of your households, and as food for your little ones.”
25 And they said, “You have saved our lives! Let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.”
26 And Yehseph made it a law over the land of Egypt to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part.  Only the land of the priests did not become Pharaoh’s.
27 And Israel dwelled in the land of Egypt; in the land of Goshen, and they had possessions in it, and were fruitful and multiplied exceedingly.
28 Jacob dwelled in the land of Egypt seventeen years, so the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were one hundred and forty-seven years.
29 And when the time for Israel to die drew near, he called his son Yehseph and said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please place your hand under my thigh, and deal with me in kindness and truth.  Please do not bury me in Egypt,
30 but when I lie down with my fathers, you shall carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burying place.” And he said, “I will do according to your word.”
31 And he said, “Swear to me.”  So he swore to him, and Israel bowed at the head of the bed.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 48

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 48

And it came to pass after these things that Yehseph was told, “Behold, your father is sick.”  So he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.
2 When Jacob was was told, “Behold, your son Yehseph has come to you,” Israel gathered his strength and sat up in the bed.
3 And Jacob said to Yehseph, “El Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me,
4 and He said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make you a company of peoples, and will give this land to your seed after you, for an everlasting possession.’
5 Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt, before I came to you in Egypt, are mine.  Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as are Reuben and Simeon.
6 But your offspring, begotten after them, shall be yours; they shall be called by the names of their brothers in their inheritance.
7 As for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan, on the journey, when there was yet some distance to go to Ephrath.  And I buried her there on the way to Ephrath – that is, Bethlehem.”
8 And when Israel saw Yehseph’s sons, he said, “Who are these?”
9 Yehseph said to his father, “They are the sons, whom Elohim has given me here.” And he said, “Bring them to me, please, that I may bless them.”
10 Now the eyes of Israel were dim from age; he could not see.  Then he brought them near to him, and he kissed them and embraced them.
11 And Israel said to Yehseph, “I had not thought to see your face, and behold, Elohim has let me see your children as well.”
12 Then Yehseph took them from his knees, and bowed his face to the ground.
13 And Yehseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand toward Israel’s left, and Manasseh in his left hand toward Israel’s right, and brought them close to him.
14 But Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands wisely, although Manasseh was the firstborn.
15 And he blessed Yehseph, and said, “The Elohim before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the Elohim Who has shepherded me all my life to this day,
16 the Angel who has redeemed me from all evil; bless the lads.  And may my name live on in them, and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”
17 When Yehseph saw that his father laid his right hand on Ephraim’s head, it grieved him, and he took up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head.
18 And Yehseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn.  Place your right hand on his head.”
19 But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know.  He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great, but truly, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his seed will become a multitude of nations.”
20 And he blessed them that day, saying, “In you shall Israel bless, saying, ‘May Elohim make you like Ephraim and Manasseh!'”  Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh.
21 Then Israel said to Yehseph, “Behold, I am about to die, but Elohim will be with you, and bring you back unto the land of your fathers.
22 I give you one portion above your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and my bow.”

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 49

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 49

And Jacob called unto his sons and said; “Gather yourselves together that I may tell you what will befall you in the days yet future.
2 Gather together and hear, O sons of Jacob, and listen to Israel your father:
3 Reuben, you are my firstborn; my might and the beginning of my strength; abundant in dignity and abundant in power,
4 and uncontrolled as water.  You shall not be abundant, because you went up to your father’s bed and defiled yourself.  He went up to my bed!
5 Simeon and Levi are brothers; instruments of violence are their swords.
6 My soul, enter not into their council, nor my honor be united with their assembly, for in their anger they slew men, and by their own will they dug up a wall.
7 Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath, for it is cruel.  I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.
8 Yehudah, your brothers shall praise you.  Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies, and your father’s sons shall bow down to you.
9 Yehudah is a lion’s whelp.  From the prey, my son, you have gone up.  He bows down, he lies down as a lion, and as a lion, who dares rouse him up?
10 The scepter will not depart from Yehudah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until Shiloh comes, and unto Him will be the obedience of the peoples.
11 He ties his foal to the vine, and his ass’s colt to the choice vine.  He washes his garments in wine, and his robes in the blood of grapes.
12 His eyes are dull from wine, and his teeth white from milk.
13 Zebulun will dwell at the seashore, and be a haven for ships, and his flank will be toward Sidon.
14 Issachar is a bony ass, crouching between two burdens.
15 When he saw that a resting place was good, and that the land was pleasant, he bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant to tribute.
16 Dan will judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel.
17 Dan will be a serpent in the way; a horned adder on the path that bites the horse’s heels, so that his rider falls backward.
18 I wait for Your salvation, O YEHOWAH!
19 As for Gad, an army will overcome him, but he will overcome in the end.
20 As for Asher, his food will be rich, and he will yield royal dainties.
21 Naphtali is a doe let loose; he gives beautiful words.
22 Yehseph is a fruitful bough, a fruitful bough by a fountain, whose branches run over a wall.
23 The archers bitterly attacked him, and shot at and hated him,
24 but his bow remained firm, and his arms are strong.  From the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob (from there is the Shepherd; the Stone of Israel),
25 from the El of your father Who helps you, and by the Almighty Who blesses you with blessings of heaven above; blessings of the deep that lies beneath; blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
26 The blessings of your father exceed the blessings of my ancestors up to the utmost bounds of the everlasting hills.  They shall be on the head of Yehseph, and on the crown of the head of the one separated from his brothers.
27 Benyehmin shall raven as a wolf.  In the morning he will devour the prey, and at night he will divide the spoil.”
28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them.  He blessed them; every one according to his blessing, he blessed them.
29 And he commanded them, saying, “I am about to be gathered to my people.  Bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite;
30 in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, that is before Mamre; in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field from Ephron the Hittite for a burying place.
31 There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah.
32 The purchase of the field, and the cave that is in it, was from the sons of Heth.”
33 And when Jacob made an end to commanding his sons, he gathered his feet into the bed and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people.

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 50

GENESIS:  CHAPTER 50

And Yehseph fell on his father’s face, and wept over him and kissed him.
2 And Yehseph commanded his servants, the physicians, to embalm his father.  So the physicians embalmed Israel.
3 And forty days were fulfilled for him, for such is the period required for embalming.  And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.
4 And when the days of mourning for him were past, Yehseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please speak to Pharaoh, saying,
5 ‘My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I die! In my grave, which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father.  Then I will return.'”
6 And Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, according as he made you swear.”
7 And Yehseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh; the elders of his household, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,
8 and all the household of Yehseph, and his brothers, and his father’s household.  Only they left their little ones, and their flocks and their herds, in the land of Goshen.
9 There also went up with him both chariots and horsemen; and it was a very great company.
10 And when they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they mourned there with a very great and sorrowful lamentation.  And he observed seven days of mourning for his father.
11 Now when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning for the Egyptians.” Therefore it was named Abel-Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.
12 Thus his sons did for him, according as he had commanded them,
13 for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham had bought, along with the field, for a burying place from Ephron the Hittite.
14 And after he had buried his father, Yehseph returned to Egypt; he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
15 And when Yehseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Yehseph hates us, and returns unto us all the wrong that we did to him!”
16 So they sent a messenger to Yehseph, saying, “Your father commanded before he died, saying,
17 ‘Thus you shall say to Yehseph, “Please forgive, I beg you, the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did evil unto you.”‘ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the Elohim of your father.”  And Yehseph wept when they spoke to him.
18 And his brothers also came and fell down before his face and said, “Behold, we are your servants.”
19 But Yehseph said to them, “Fear not, for am I in Elohim’s place?
20 As for you, you meant evil against me.  But Elohim meant it for good, in order to accomplish, as is this day; to save many people alive.
21 Now therefore, fear not.  I will provide for you and your little ones.”  And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.
22 Now Yehseph dwelled in Egypt; he and his father’s household, and Yehseph lived one hundred and ten years.
23 And Yehseph saw Ephraim’s children to the third generation.  Also the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Yehseph’s knees.
24 Yehseph said to his brothers, “I die, but Elohim will surely visit you, and bring you up from this land, to the land that He swore unto Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”
25 And Yehseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, “Elohim will surely visit you, and you shall carry my bones up from here.”
26 And Yehseph died at the age of one hundred and ten years; and they embalmed him, and placed him in a coffin in Egypt.
