HABAKKUK:  CHAPTER 1

HABAKKUK:  CHAPTER 1

The burden, which Habakkuk the prophet did see:
2 O YEHOWAH, how long shall I cry, and You will not hear? I cry unto You, “Violence!”  Yet You do not save.
3 Why do You show me iniquity, and cause me to behold wickedness? Oppression and violence are before me, and there are those that raise up strife and contention.
4 Therefore the law is slack, and justice does never go forth.  The wicked encompass round about the just, therefore wrong judgments issue forth.
5 “Behold the nations; look, be amazed and marvel!  For I work a work in your days that you will not believe, even though it is foretold.
6 For, behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, which will march through the breadth of the earth, to possess dwelling places that are not theirs.
7 They are terrible and dreadful, and their justice and dignity proceed from themselves.
8 Their horses are swifter than leopards and fiercer than wolves in the evening, and their horsemen shall come in pride; and their horsemen shall come from afar.  They shall fly like an eagle that hastens to eat;
9 they shall all come for violence; they will sup up eastward, and they will gather captives like sand.
10 And they will mock kings, scorn rulers and laugh at every fortress, reducing it to dust as they capture it.
11 Then shall their spirit change and they will pass over and be found guilty; they whose strength is their eloah.”
12 Are You not from everlasting, O YEHOWAH, my Elohim, my Holy One? We shall not die!  You, O YEHOWAH, have ordained them for judgment, and You, O Mighty Rock, have established them for correction.
13 Your eyes are too pure to approve evil, and You cannot look upon iniquity.  Why then do You regard those that deal treacherously, and hold Your tongue when the wicked devour those more righteous than they,
14 and make men like the fish of the sea, and like the creeping things, without a ruler over them?
15 They take up all of them with the hook, and catch them in their net, and gather them in their drag.  Therefore they rejoice and are glad;
16 therefore they sacrifice to their net and burn incense to their drag, because by these things their portion is fat, and their food is plenteous.
17 Will they therefore empty their net, and not spare continually to slay the nations?”

HABAKKUK:  CHAPTER 2

HABAKKUK:  CHAPTER 2

I will stand my watch, and set myself upon the tower, and I will wait to see what He will say to me, and what I will answer when I am reproved.
2 And YEHOWAH answered me and said, “Write the vision, and engrave it on tablets, that the one who reads it may run,
3 for the vision is yet for the appointed time; it speaks to the end, and it will not fail. Though it tarries, wait for it, because it will surely come, and it will not be late.
4 Behold, the souls which are uplifted are not upright within them, but the righteous will live by faith!
5 Also, because they sin by wine, they are proud, and do not remain at home, but they enlarge their appetite as hell, and as death, cannot be satisfied.  So they gather unto themselves all nations and collect to themselves all peoples.
6 Shall not all these take up a parable against them, and a taunting proverb against them saying, ‘Woe to those who increase that which is not theirs.  How long? And who makes themselves rich by debt?
7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly, and those who cause you to fear awaken; and you will be as plunder unto them?
8 Thus, because you have plundered many nations, the remnant of the people will plunder you; because of the blood of mankind, and because of the violence of the land, of the city and of all that dwell therein.
9 Woe to those who covet evil gain to their house, so that they may put their nest on high; that they may be delivered from the power of evil.
10 You have devised shame for your house by cutting off many people, and have sinned against your soul,
11 for the stone shall cry out from the wall, and the timber shall answer it.
12 Woe to those who build a town with bloodshed, and establish a city by iniquity!
13 Behold, is it not from YEHOWAH of hosts that the people shall labor in the very fire, and the nations weary themselves in much vanity?
14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of YEHOWAH, as the waters cover the sea.
15 Woe to those who make their neighbors drink; who gather together with their bottle to make them drunk, so as to look upon their nakedness!
16 You will be filled with shame rather than glory.  Drink you also, and expose your nakedness; the cup of YEHOWAH’S right hand will turn to you, and intense disgrace will be your glory.
17 For the violence of Lebanon will cover you just as the spoil of its beasts made them afraid, because of the bloodshed of mankind, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.
18 What profit is the graven image that the maker of it has hewn; the molten image, a teacher of lies that the maker of their work trusts in, to make dumb idols?
19 Woe to those who say to wood, ‘Awake!’  To a dumb stone, ‘Arise, teach!’  Behold, they are overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.
20 But YEHOWAH is in His holy temple.  Let all the earth keep silent before Him.”

HABAKKUK:  CHAPTER 3

HABAKKUK:  CHAPTER 3

A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet; a poem:
2 “O YEHOWAH, I have heard You speak, and was afraid.  O YEHOWAH, revive Your work in the midst of the years; in the midst of the years make it known.  In wrath remember mercy.
3 Eloah comes from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran.  Selah!  His glory covers the heavens, and the earth is full of His praise.
4 His brightness is as the sunlight, with rays of light from His hands; and there was the hiding of His power.
5 Before Him goes pestilence, and burning coals go forth at His feet.
6 He stood and measured the earth; He looked and terrified the nations, and the everlasting mountains were scattered; the ancient hills were cast down.  His ways are everlasting!
7 I saw the tents of Ethiopia in affliction; the curtains of the land of Midian trembling.
8 Was YEHOWAH kindled with anger against the rivers, or was Your anger against the rivers, or Your wrath against the sea, that You rode on Your horses, and upon Your chariots of deliverance?
9 Your bow was made quite bare; Your staff of discipline was sworn.  Selah!  You divided the earth with rivers.
10 The mountains saw You and trembled; the flood of the waters passed by.  The deep uttered its voice, and lifted up its hands on high.
11 The sun and the moon stood still in their dwelling places, and departed at the light of Your arrows; at the brilliance of Your glittering spears.
12 In indignation You marched through the earth; in anger You threshed the nations.
13 You went forth for the deliverance of Your people; for the deliverance of Your anointed. You struck the head of the house of the wicked, and lay bare from the foundation to the neck.  Selah!
14 You did pierce with their own spears the rulers of the villages.  They came out as a whirlwind to scatter; their rejoicing was as to devour the poor in secret.
15 You tread upon the sea with Your horses; on the heap of great waters.
16 When I heard, my body trembled, and my lips quivered at the sound.  Decay entered into my bones, and I trembled in my place, that I might rest in the day of tribulation, when they come up unto the nations, and invade with their troops.
17 Though the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be on the vines; the labor of the olive should fail, and the fields should yield no food; though the flock should be cut off from the fold, and there be no cattle in the stalls,
18 yet I will be joyful in YEHOWAH; I will rejoice in the Elohim of my deliverance.
19 Adonay YEHOWAH is my strength, and He makes my feet like hinds’ feet, and makes me walk upon my high places.  On my stringed instruments.”
