NAHUM:  CHAPTER 1

NAHUM:  CHAPTER 1

The burden of Nineveh:  The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
2 EL is jealous, and YEHOWAH is avenging; YEHOWAH is avenging and furious. YEHOWAH will take vengeance on His adversaries, and He reserves wrath for His enemies.
3 YEHOWAH is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked. YEHOWAH has His way in the whirlwind, and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet.
4 He rebukes the sea, and makes it dry, and He dries up all the rivers.  Bashan and Carmel languish; the blossoms of Lebanon languish.
5 The mountains quake before Him and the hills melt.  The earth is upheld by His presence; the world and all that dwell upon it.
6 Who can stand before His indignation, and who can abide in the fierceness of His anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are destroyed by Him.
7 YEHOWAH is good; a stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows those who trust in Him.
8 But with an overflowing flood He will make an utter end of the place, and darkness will pursue His enemies.
9 Whatever you imagine against YEHOWAH, He will make an utter end of it.  Affliction will not rise up a second time,
10 for while they are tangled together like thorns, and while they are drunken like drunkards, they shall be consumed as stubble fully dried.
11 There is one come out of you, that imagined evil against YEHOWAH; a wicked counselor,
12 and thus says YEHOWAH, “Though they are complete, and likewise many, even so, they will be cut off and pass away.  And though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no longer.
13 For now will I break his yoke from off you, and I will burst your bonds asunder.”
14 And YEHOWAH has given command concerning you,  “That your name will be sown no more.  Out of the house of your elohim will I cut off the graven image and the molten image, and I will make your grave, for you are vile.”
15 Behold upon the mountains the feet of those who bring good news; who proclaim peace! O Yehudah, keep your solemn feasts and pay your vows, for Belial will no more pass through you; he is utterly cut off.

NAHUM:  CHAPTER 2

The one that dashes in pieces has come up before your face.  Guard the fortress, watch the road, strengthen your loins and fortify your power mightily.
2 For YEHOWAH will restore the majesty of Jacob, like the majesty of Israel.  For the emptiers have emptied them out, and destroyed their vine-branches.
3 The shields of his mighty men are red; the valiant men are in scarlet.  The chariots are flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the cypress trees shall be terribly shaken.
4 The chariots shall rage in the streets, they shall jostle one against another in the streets.  They shall seem like torches, and they shall run like lightening.
5 He will recount his nobles; they will stumble in their walk; they shall make haste to the wall, but the defense will be prepared.
6 The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved.
7 It is established; she shall be led away captive, and she shall be carried away, and her handmaids shall lead her, with the voice of doves, beating on their breasts.
8 But Nineveh is of old, like a pool of water.  Yet they shall flee. “Stand, stand!” Shall be their cry, but none shall look back.
9 Take the spoil of silver; take the spoil of gold; for there is no end to the store and glory out of all the pleasant objects.
10 She is empty, and void, and waste, and the heart melts, and the knees knock together, and much pain is in all the loins, and the faces of them all gather blackness.
11 Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion’s cub, and nothing made them afraid?
12 The lion tore enough for its cubs, and strangles for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey and his dens with ravens.
13 “Behold, I am against you,” declares YEHOWAH of hosts. “And I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword will devour your young lions.  I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voices of your messengers will be heard no more.”

NAHUM:  CHAPTER 3

NAHUM:  CHAPTER 3

Woe to the bloody city.  It is full of lies and pillaging, and the prey never depart.
2 The crack of the whip, the noise of the rattling of wheels, and of the galloping horses and of the jumping chariots;
3 the horsemen lift up the bright sword and the glittering spear, and there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcasses; and there is never an end of their corpses.  They stumble over the corpses.
4 And this, because of the multitude of the idolatries of the well-favored whore; the mistress of witchcraft, that sells nations through her idolatry, and families through her witchcraft.
5 “Behold, I am against you,” says YEHOWAH of hosts, “And I will lift up your skirts over your face, and show the nations your nakedness, and the kingdoms your shame.
6 And I will cast abominable filth upon you, make you vile and set you up as a spectacle.
7 And it will come to pass that all who look upon you will flee from you, and say, ‘Nineveh is laid waste!  Who will bemoan her?’ Where will I seek comforters for you?”
8 Are you better than populous No, which was situated by the river, and had waters round about it, whose rampart was the sea, and whose wall was the sea?
9 Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and she was without limits.  Put and Lubim were her helpers.
10 Yet she was carried away; she went into captivity.  Her children also were dashed to pieces at the head of every street, and they cast lots for her honorable men.  And all her great men were bound in chains.
11 You also shall be drunk; you shall be hidden; you also shall seek strength because of the enemy.
12 All your strongholds shall be like fig trees with the first-ripe figs; when shaken, they fall into the mouth of the eater.
13 Behold, your people in the midst of you are women.  The gates of your land shall be wide open to your enemies.  The fire will devour your bars.
14 Draw your water for the siege; strengthen your strongholds.  Go into the clay and tread the mortar, and make strong the bricks of the kiln.
15 There shall the fire devour you, and the sword will cut you off; it will eat you up like the cankerworm.  Multiply yourself like the cankerworm, multiply yourself like the locust.
16 You have multiplied your merchants more than the stars of heaven, and the cankerworm spoils and flies away.
17 Your crowned ones are like the locusts, and your captains are like the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges on a cold day, but when the sun rises they flee away.  And the place where they are is not known.
18 Your shepherds are sleeping, O king of Assyria; your nobles shall dwell in the dust.  Your people are scattered upon the mountains, and there is no one to gather them.
19 There is no healing for your affliction; your wound is incurable.  All who hear the report of you will clap hands over you, for upon whom has not your evil passed continually?
