RUTH:  CHAPTER 1

RUTH:   CHAPTER 1

Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land.  And a certain man of Bethlehem in Yehudah went to sojourn in the land of Moab with his wife and his two sons.
2 And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife, Naomi; and the names of his two sons:  Mahlon and Chilion; Ephrathites of Bethlehem in Yehudah.  And they came into the land of Moab and continued there.
3 Then Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died, and she was left, and her two sons.
4 And they took to themselves wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth.  And they dwelled there about ten years.
5 Then Mahlon and Chilion also died; both of them, and the woman remained of her two children and her husband.
6 Then she rose up with her daughters-in-law, that she might return from the land of Moab; for she had heard in the land of Moab that YEHOWAH had visited His people in giving them bread.
7 Therefore she went from the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Yehudah.
8 And Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each to her mother’s house.  May YEHOWAH deal kindly with you as you have dealt with the dead and with me.
9 May YEHOWAH grant that you may find rest; each in the house of her husband.”  Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices and wept.
10 And they said to her, “Surely, we will return with you to your people.”
11 But Naomi said, “Turn back, my daughters.  Why should you go with me? Have I yet sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
12 Turn back, my daughters!  Go, for I am too old to have a husband.  If I said I have hope; if I should even have a husband tonight and also beget sons,
13 would you wait until they were grown? Would you stay for them from having husbands? No, my daughters, for I am very much more bitter than you, for the hand of YEHOWAH has gone forth against me.”
14 And they lifted up their voices and wept again, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth cleaved to her.
15 Then she said, “Behold, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and her elohim; return after your sister-in-law.”
16 And Ruth said, “Entreat me not to leave you or to turn back from following you, for where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge.  Your people shall be my people, and your Elohim, my Elohim.
17 Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried.  Thus may YEHOWAH do to me, and worse, if anything but death part you and me.”
18 And when she saw that she was steadfastly minded to go with her, she spoke no more to her.
19 So they two went until they came to Bethlehem.  And it came to pass when they had come to Bethlehem, all the city was stirred because of them, and the women said, “Is this Naomi?”
20 And she said to them, “Call me not Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.
21 I went out full, but YEHOWAH has brought me back empty.  Why do you call me Naomi, since YEHOWAH has witnessed against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?”
22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her; who returned from the land of Moab.  And they came to Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.

RUTH:  CHAPTER 2

RUTH:  CHAPTER 2

And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband; a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz.
2 And Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, “Let me, please, go to the field and glean among the ears of grain after one in whose sight I may find favor.”  And she said to her, “Go, my daughter.”
3 So she went, and she came and gleaned in the field after the reapers, and she chanced to come to the portion of the land belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech.
4 And behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem and said to the reapers, “May YEHOWAH be with you.”  And they said to him, “May YEHOWAH bless you.”
5 Then said Boaz to his servant that was set over the reapers, “Whose maiden is this?”
6 And the servant set over the reapers replied, “She is the young Moabite maiden who returned with Naomi from the land of Moab.
7 And she said, ‘I pray you, let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves.’  Thus she came and has continued from the morning even until now; she has been sitting in the house for a little while.”
8 Then said Boaz to Ruth, “Hear carefully, my daughter.  Go not to glean in another field, nor go from here, but remain here with my maidens.
9 Let your eyes be on the field that they reap, and go after them.  Indeed, I have commanded the servants not to touch you.  When you are thirsty, go to the water vessels and drink from what the servants draw.”
10 Then she fell on her face, bowing herself to the ground, and said to him, “Why have I found favor in your eyes, that you should have regard for me, since I am a foreigner?”
11 And Boaz answered and said to her, “It has fully been shown me, all that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, and how you have left your father and your mother, and the land of your birth, and came to a people that you did not previously know.
12 May YEHOWAH recompense your work, and a full reward be given you from YEHOWAH, the Elohim of Israel, under Whose wings you have come to trust.”
13 Then she said, “I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, for you have comforted me, and have spoken kindly to your handmaid, though I am not like one of your handmaids.”
14 And Boaz said to her at mealtime, “Come here, that you may eat of the bread and dip your morsel in the vinegar.”  And she sat beside the reapers; and he handed her roasted ears of grain, and she ate, and was satisfied, and left.
15 And when she rose to glean, Boaz commanded his servants, saying, “Let her glean even among the sheaves, and do not reproach her.
16 And let fall of the handfuls of the bundles on purpose, and leave it that she may glean, and do not rebuke her.”
17 And she gleaned in the field until evening.  Then she beat out what she had gleaned, and it was about an ephah of barley.
18 She took it up and came into the city, and her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned.  She also took out and gave to Naomi what she had reserved, after she was satisfied.
19 And her mother-in-law then said to her, “Where did you glean today and where did you work? May he who took notice of you be blessed.”  So she told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked and said, “The man’s name with whom I worked today is Boaz.”
20 Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May he be blessed of YEHOWAH who has not withdrawn his kindness to the living and to the dead.”  And Naomi said to her, “The man is our next of kin, and of those who have the right of our redemption.”
21 Then Ruth the Moabitess said, “He said unto me also, ‘You shall stay close to my servants until they have finished all my harvest.'”
22 And Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, “It is good, my daughter, that you go out with his handmaids, so that no accident fall upon you in another field.”
23 So she stayed close by the handmaids of Boaz in order to glean, until the end of the barley harvest and the wheat harvest.  And she dwelt with her mother-in-law.

RUTH:  CHAPTER 3

RUTH:  CHAPTER 3

And Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, “My daughter, shall I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you?
2 Now is not Boaz our kindred, with whose maidens you were? Behold, he winnows barley tonight at the threshing floor.
3 Wash yourself therefore, and anoint yourself, and put on your clothes, and go down to the threshing floor.  Do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.
4 And it shall be, when he lies down, that you shall mark the place where he lies, and you shall go and uncover his feet and lay yourself down; then he will tell you what you shall do.”
5 And she said to her, “All that you say I will do.”
6 So she went down to the threshing floor and did according to all that her mother-in-law commanded.
7 And when Boaz had eaten and drank, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain; and she came secretly, and uncovered his feet and lay herself down.
8 And it came to pass at midnight that the man was startled and bent forward, and behold, a woman was lying at his feet.
9 And he said, “Who are you?” And she answered, “I am Ruth your handmaid.  So spread your covering over your handmaid, for you are kinsman with right of redemption.”
10 And he said, “Blessed be you of YEHOWAH, my daughter!  You have shown more kindness in the latter end than at the first, by not going after young men, whether poor or rich.
11 And now, my daughter, fear not, for I will do to you whatever you ask; for all my people in the city know that you are a woman of virtue.
12 Now it is true, I am a redeeming kinsman, however, there is one kinsman closer than I.
13 Spend the night, and it shall be in the morning, if he will redeem you, well, let him redeem you.  But if he will not redeem you, then I will redeem you; as YEHOWAH lives.  Lie down until morning.”
14 So she lay at his feet until morning and rose before one could recognize another, and he said, “Let it not be known that a woman came to the threshing floor.”
15 Again he said, “Bring the veil that is on you and hold it.” And when she held it, he laid six measures of barley on it for her.  Then she went into the city.
16 And when she came to her mother-in-law, she said, “How did it go, my daughter?” And she told her all that the man had done to her.
17 And she said, “These six measures of barley he gave to me, for he said to me, ‘Go not empty to your mother-in-law.'”
18 Then she said, “Sit still, my daughter, until you know how the matter will fall, for the man will not rest until he has settled it this day.”

RUTH:  CHAPTER 4

RUTH:  CHAPTER 4

Now Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there, and behold, he with the right of redemption was passing by, so he said, “Turn aside, friend, sit down here.”  And he turned aside and sat down.
2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.”  So they sat down.
3 Then he said to him with the right of redemption, “Naomi, who has come back from the land of Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our brother Elimelech.
4 So I thought to advertise to you, saying, ‘Buy before those who are sitting here, and before the elders of my people.  If you will redeem it, redeem it, but if not, tell me that I may know, for there is none to redeem it but you, and I am after you.'” And he said, “I will redeem it.”
5 Then Boaz said, “On the day you redeem the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also redeem Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the deceased, in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance.”
6 And the closest kinsman said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar my own inheritance.  Redeem my right for yourself, for I cannot redeem it.”
7 Now this, in former times in Israel, concerning the redemption and concerning the exchange:  To confirm any matter, a man removed his sandal and gave it to his neighbor, and this was the testimony in Israel.
8 So when the closest kinsman said to Boaz, “Buy it for you,” he removed his sandal.
9 Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have redeemed all that belonged to Elimelech, and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon, from the hand of Naomi.
10 Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess; the widow of Mahlon, I have redeemed to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, so that the name of the dead will not be cut off from his brethren, or from the gate of his place; you are witnesses this day.”
11 And all the people who were in the court, and the elders, said, “We are witnesses.  May YEHOWAH make the woman who is coming into your house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel; and may you achieve wealth in Ephratah and become famous in Bethlehem.
12 And may your house be like the house of Perez whom Tamar begot unto Yehudah; of the seed that YEHOWAH will give you of this young woman.”
13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife, and he went in to her.  And YEHOWAH gave her conception, and she gave birth to a son.
14 And the women said to Naomi, “Blessed is YEHOWAH Who has not left you without a kinsman this day, and may his name become famous in Israel.
15 May he also be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, and is better to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.”
16 And Naomi took the child and laid him in her lap, and became his nurse.
17 And the women; her neighbors, gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi!”  So they named him Obed.  He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
18 Now these are the generations of Perez:  Perez begat Hezron,
19 and Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab,
20 and Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon,
21 and Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed,
22 and Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.
