ZEPHANIYEH:  CHAPTER 1

ZEPHANIYEH:  CHAPTER 1

The Word of YEHOWAH that came to Zephaniyeh son of Cushi, son of Gedaliyeh, son of Amariyeh, son of Hezekiyeh, in the days of Yosiyeh son of Amon, king of Yehudah:
2 “I will utterly take away everything from the face of the earth,” declares YEHOWAH.
3 “I will take away mankind and the animals; I will take away the birds of the air and the fish of the sea, and the stumbling blocks along with the wicked, and I will cut off mankind from the face of the earth,” declares YEHOWAH.
4 “I will also stretch out My hand upon Yehudah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the names of the Chemarims, with the priests,
5 and those who bow down on the housetops to the host of heaven, and those who bow down and swear to YEHOWAH, yet swear by the king,
6 and those who have turned back from following YEHOWAH, and those who have not sought YEHOWAH or inquired of Him.
7 Keep silent in the presence of Adonay YEHOWAH!  For the day of YEHOWAH is at hand!  For YEHOWAH has prepared a sacrifice; He has sanctified His guests,
8 and it will come to pass on the day of YEHOWAH’S sacrifice, that I will punish the princes; the king’s sons, and all who clothe themselves with foreign garments.
9 And on that day I will punish all who leap on the threshold, and fill the houses of their lord’s with violence and deceit.
10 On that day,” declares YEHOWAH, “There will be the sound of a cry from the fish gate, and howling from the second gate, and great affliction in the hills.
11 Howl, O inhabitants of Maktesh, for all the people of Canaan will be silenced; all who are laden with silver will be cut off.
12 And it will come to pass at that time that I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish all who are set on their lees, and who say in their hearts, ‘YEHOWAH will not do good or evil!’
13 Therefore, their wealth will become plunder and their houses desolate; they will build houses but not inhabit them, and plant vineyards but not drink the wine.
14 The great day of YEHOWAH is near; near and hastening quickly.  The voice of the day of YEHOWAH:  The mighty ones shall cry bitterly.
15 That day is a day of wrath; a day of distress and anguish; a day of devastation and desolation; a day of misery and misfortune; a day of clouds and darkness;
16 a day of trumpet and alarm against the fortified cities and the high towers.
17 I will afflict mankind, so they will walk like the blind, because they have sinned against YEHOWAH, and their blood will be poured out like dust and their flesh like dung.
18 Neither their silver nor their gold will deliver them on the day of YEHOWAH’S wrath, but the whole earth will be devoured by the fire of His jealousy, for He will make a speedy and terrifying end of all the inhabitants of the earth.

ZEPHANIYEH:  CHAPTER 2

ZEPHANIYEH:  CHAPTER 2

Gather yourselves together, yes, gather together, O nation not desired,
2 before the statute brings forth; before the day passes like the chaff; before the wrathful anger of YEHOWAH comes upon you; before the day of YEHOWAH’S anger comes upon you.
3 Seek YEHOWAH, all you humble of the earth, who have done His judgments; seek righteousness, seek humility.  Perhaps you will be hidden in the day of YEHOWAH’S anger.
4 For Gaza will be forsaken and Ashkelon a desolation; Ashdod will be driven out at noon and Ekron will be uprooted.
5 Woe to the inhabitants of the seacoast; the nation of the Cherethites!  The Word of YEHOWAH is against you, O Canaan, land of the Philistines.  I will even destroy you, so that there will be no inhabitant.
6 And the seacoast will be pastures, with cottages for shepherds and folds for flocks.
7 And the coast will be for the remnant of the house of Yehudah to pasture upon.  In the houses of Ashkelon they will lie down at evening, for YEHOWAH their Elohim will care for them and restore their prosperity.
8 I have heard the rebuke from Moab, and the reproach from the sons of Ammon, with which they have reproached My people, and magnified themselves against their borders.
9 Therefore, as I live,” declares YEHOWAH of hosts, the Elohim of Israel, “Surely Moab will be like Sodom, and the children of Ammon like Gomorrah; breeding nettles and salt pits, and perpetual desolation.  The remnant of My people will plunder them, and the remainder of My nation will inherit them.
10 This they will have instead of their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of YEHOWAH of hosts.
11 YEHOWAH will be terrible to them, for He will famish all the elohim of the earth, and all the land of the nations will bow down to Him; everyone from his own place.
12 You Ethiopian’s also, you will be slain by His sword,
13 and He will stretch out His hand against the north and destroy Assyria, and will make Nineveh a desolation; a place of drought like the wilderness.
14 Flocks will lie down in the midst of her, and the beasts of the nations; both the cormorant and the heron will lodge in the tops of her pillars, and will sing aloud in her windows.  Desolation will be on her thresholds, for He will lay bare her cedar work.
15 This is the joyous city that dwelled securely, and said in her heart, ‘I am, and there is no one equal to me!’  How she has become desolate; a resting place for beasts!  Everyone who passes by her will hiss and wave their hand.

ZEPHANIYEH:  CHAPTER 3

Woe to the rebellious, defiled and proud city!
2 She obeyed no voice; she accepted no instruction; she trusted not in YEHOWAH; she drew not near to Elohim.
3 Her rulers within her are roaring lions; her judges are as wolves at evening, leaving nothing for the morning;
4 her prophets are insignificant, treacherous men, and her priests have profaned the sanctuary; they have violently made bare the law.
5 The righteous YEHOWAH within her; He will do no iniquity.  Every morning He brings His justice to light.  He does not fail, but the unjust knows no shame.
6 I have cut off nations; their high towers are desolate.  I have made their streets waste, with no one passing by; their cities are destroyed, so that there is no one; so that there is no inhabitant.
7 I said, ‘Surely you will fear Me, and accept instruction,’ so that her dwelling would not be cut off, howsoever I shall punish them.  But they eagerly corrupted all their deeds.
8 Therefore, wait for Me,” says YEHOWAH, “For the day I rise up to the prey.  For I have determined to gather nations; to assemble kingdoms, to pour upon them My indignation; all My burning anger, for all the earth will be devoured by the fire of My jealousy.
9 For then I will give the people purified lips, that all of them may call upon the Name of YEHOWAH, to serve Him in one accord.
10 From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia My worshipers; the dispersed apple of My eye, will bring My offerings.
11 In that day you will not be ashamed of all your doings, by which you have offended Me, for at that time I will take away from your midst all that rejoice in their pride, and you will never again be prideful on My holy mountain.
12 And I will leave among you a humble and lean people, and they shall hope and trust in the Name of YEHOWAH.
13 The remnant of Israel will not do iniquity nor speak lies, nor will a deceitful tongue be found in their mouths, for they will feed and lie down and no one will make them afraid.
14 Sing for joy, O daughter of Zion!  Shout, O Israel!  Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem!
15 YEHOWAH has taken away your judgments; He has cast out your adversary.  The King of Israel, YEHOWAH, is in your midst; you will not see evil any more.
16 In that day it will be said to Jerusalem:  ‘Fear not, O Zion; let not your hands be weak.
17 YEHOWAH, your Elohim in your midst; is a victorious warrior.  He will rejoice over you with joy, and His judgments will be concealed in His love; He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.
18 ‘From you I will gather the grieving for the solemn assembly, and break the reproach that is a burden to them.’
19 Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflicts you, and heal all the lame.  I will gather the banished, and I will turn their shame into praise and renown throughout all the earth.
20 At that time I will come to you; even at the time when I assemble you together, and I will give you authority and praise among all the peoples of the earth; when I restore your fortunes before your eyes,” says YEHOWAH.
