JOB:  CHAPTER 1

JOB:  CHAPTER 1

There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was perfect and upright; one that feared Elohim and turned from evil.
2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
3 His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female asses, and a very great household, so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
4 And his sons went and feasted in their houses, each one on his day, and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
5 When the days of feasting were completed, Job sent and sanctified them, rising early in the morning and offering burnt offerings according to the number of them all, for Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed Elohim in their hearts.”  Thus Job did continually.
6 Now there was a day when the sons of Elohim came to present themselves before YEHOWAH, and Satan came also among them.
7 And YEHOWAH said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Then Satan answered YEHOWAH and said, “From going to and fro upon the earth, and from walking up and down upon it.”
8 And YEHOWAH said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a perfect and upright man, fearing Elohim and turning away from evil?”
9 Then Satan answered YEHOWAH, and said, “Does Job fear Elohim for nothing?
10 Have You not made a hedge about him, and about his house and all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11 But put forth Your hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will curse You to Your face.”
12 And YEHOWAH said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power, only upon him do not put forth your hand.”  So Satan went forth from the presence of YEHOWAH.
13 And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,
14 and there came a messenger unto Job, and said, “The oxen were plowing and the asses feeding beside them,
15 and the Sabeans fell upon them and took them away, and they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
16 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, “The fire of Elohim fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
17 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, “The Chaldeans formed three bands and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away and slain the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
18 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,
19 and behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young ones, and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
20 Then Job rose up and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped,
21 and said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return there. YEHOWAH gave, and YEHOWAH has taken away.  Blessed be the Name of YEHOWAH.”
22 Through all this Job sinned not, nor did he charge Elohim foolishly.

JOB:  CHAPTER 2

JOB:  CHAPTER 2

Again there was a day when the sons of Elohim came to present themselves before YEHOWAH, and Satan came also among them to present himself before YEHOWAH.
2 And YEHOWAH said to Satan, “From where do you come?” And Satan answered YEHOWAH and said, “From going to and fro upon the earth, and from walking up and down upon it.”
3 And YEHOWAH said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a perfect and upright man, fearing Elohim and turning away from evil? And still he holds fast his integrity, although you moved Me against him, to destroy him without cause.”
4 Satan answered YEHOWAH and said, “Skin for skin, yes, all that a man has will he give for his life,
5 but put forth Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse You to Your face.”
6 And YEHOWAH said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand, only spare his life.”
7 So Satan went forth from the presence of YEHOWAH and struck Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto the crown of his head.
8 And he took a potsherd to scrape himself with, and he sat down among the ashes.
9 Then his wife said to him, “Do you still retain your integrity? Curse Elohim, and die!”
10 But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks.  What? Shall we receive good at the hand of Elohim, and not receive evil?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.
11 Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, they came each one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite, for they made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and comfort him.
12 When they lifted up their eyes from far off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice and wept; and they each one tore their robe, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.
13 And they sat down upon the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, and none spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.

JOB:  CHAPTER 3

JOB:  CHAPTER 3

After this Job opened his mouth and cursed his day of birth.
2 And Job spoke, and said,
3 “Let the day perish whereon I was born, and the night in which it was said, ‘There is a man conceived.’
4 Let that day be darkness; let not Eloah regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.
5 Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.
6 As for that night, let darkness seize it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year; let it not come into the number of the months.
7 Lo, let that night be desolate; let no joyful voice come therein.
8 Let them curse it who curse the day; who are prepared to rise up in mourning.
9 Let the stars of its twilight be dark; let it look for light but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day,
10 because it shut not the opening of my mother’s womb, nor hid sorrow from my eyes.
11 Why did I not die from the womb? Why did I not die when I came out of the belly?
12 Why did the knees meet me, or why the breasts, that I should suck?
13 For now should I have lain still and been quiet; I should have slept.  Then I would have been at rest
14 with kings and counselors of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves;
15 or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver.
16 Or like a hidden abortion, which is discarded; as infants that never saw light.
17 There the wicked cease from troubling, and there the weary are at rest.
18 There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor.
19 The small and the great are there, and the servant is free from his lord.
20 Why is light given to those who suffer, and life to the bitter of soul,
21 which longs for death, but it comes not; and dig for it more than for hidden treasures,
22 which rejoice greatly, and are glad, when they do find the grave?
23 Why is light given to a those whose way is hidden, and whom Eloah has hedged in?
24 For my sighings come before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.
25 For the thing I greatly fear has come upon me, and that which I was afraid has come unto me.
26 I was not in safety, neither had I rest; neither was I quiet, yet trouble came.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 4

JOB:  CHAPTER 4

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2 “If we attempt to commune with you, will you be grieved? But who can withhold from speaking?
3 Behold you have instructed many, and you have strengthened weak hands.
4 Your words have upheld those that were falling, and you have strengthened feeble knees.
5 But now it has come upon you, and you are faint; it touches you, and you are troubled.
6 Is not your fear your confidence and hope and the integrity of your ways?
7 Remember, please, whoever perished being innocent? Or where were the righteous cut off?
8 Even as I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow wickedness, reap the same.
9 By the breath of Eloah they perish, and by the breach of His nostrils they are consumed.
10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions are broken.
11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the stout lions and whelps are scattered.
12 Now a word was secretly brought to me, and my ear received an inkling of it.
13 In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falls upon mankind,
14 terror came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake.
15 Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up;
16 it stood still, but I could not discern the form of it; an image was before my eyes; there was silence, then I heard a voice,
17 ‘Shall mortal humanity be more pure than their Maker?
18 Behold, He put no trust in His servants, and His angels He charges with folly.
19 How much less those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust; who are crushed before the moth?
20 They are destroyed from morning to evening; they perish forever without any regard.
21 Does not the excellence within them go away, and die without wisdom.’”

JOB:  CHAPTER 5

JOB:  CHAPTER 5

“Call now, if there are any that will answer you; and to which of the saints will you turn?
2 For wrath kills the foolish, and jealousy slays the silly.
3 I have seen the foolish taking root, and I immediately curse their habitation.
4 Their children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate; neither is there any deliverer.
5 Their harvest is eaten by the hungry, even though they take if from the thorns, and the robber swallows up their substance.
6 For affliction does not come forth from the dust, nor does trouble spring from the ground,
7 for humans are born in trouble, and sparks fly upward.
8 But I would seek unto El, and unto Elohim would I commit my cause;
9 Who does great and unsearchable things; marvelous things without number.
10 Who gives rain upon the earth, and sends water upon the fields,
11 to set on high those who are low, that those who mourn may be exalted to safety.
12 He disappoints the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their undertaking.
13 He captures the wise by their own craftiness, and the counsel of the unsavory is exposed swiftly;
14 they meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope at midday as in the night.
15 But He saves the poor from the sword of their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.
16 So the poor have hope, and iniquity shuts its mouth.
17 Behold, happy are they whom Eloah corrects.  Therefore do not despise the discipline of the Almighty,
18 for He makes sore, and binds up; He wounds, and His hands make whole.
19 He will deliver you from six troubles.  Yes, even in seven no evil will touch you.
20 In famine He will redeem you from death, and in war from the power of the sword.
21 You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, and you will fear not the destruction when it comes.
22 At destruction and famine you will laugh; neither will you fear the beasts of the earth.
23 For you will be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field will be at peace with you.
24 You will know that your tent is at peace, and you will visit your habitation and not sin.
25 You will know also that your seed will be abundant, and your children as the grass of the earth.
26 You will come to your grave in a full age, like a stalk of corn is laid down in its season.
27 Lo this, we have searched it, and so it is.  Hear it, and know for yourself.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 6

JOB:  CHAPTER 6

But Job answered and said,
2 “Oh that my grief were thoroughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances altogether,
3 for then it would be heavier than the sand of the sea.  Therefore, I swallow my words!
4 For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison of them is absorbed by my spirit; the terrors of Eloah are set in array against me.
5 Does the wild ass bray when he has grass, or does the ox low over its fodder?
6 Can that which is unsavory be eaten without salt, or is there any taste in the white of an egg?
7 The things my soul refused to touch, are as my sorrowful food.
8 Oh that I might have my request, and that Eloah would grant what I long for.
9 Even that it would please Eloah to destroy me; that He would loosen His hand and cut me off!
10 Then should I yet have comfort; yes, I would harden myself in sorrow.  Let Him not spare, for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
11 What is my strength that I should tarry, and what is my end, that I should prolong my life?
12 Is my strength the strength of stones, or is my flesh brass?
13 Is not my help within me?  And is wisdom driven from me?
14 To those who are afflicted, mercy should come forth from their friends, so that they do not forsake the fear of the Almighty.
15 My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as a stream of brooks they flow away;
16 which are blackened because of ice, wherein the snow is hidden.
17 When they become warm they vanish; when it is hot they are consumed out of their place.
18 The paths of their way are turned around.  They go up into nothing and perish.
19 The roads of Tema awaited them; the caravans of Sheba looked for them.
20 They were ashamed, because they had hoped; they came there and were disappointed.
21 For now you are nothing; you have seen my dismay and are afraid.
22 Did I say, ‘Bring something to me?’ Or, ‘Give me a donation from your substance?’
23 Or, ‘Deliver me from the enemy’s hand?’ Or, ‘Redeem me from the hand of the mighty?’
24 Teach me, and I will hold my tongue, and make me understand where I have erred.
25 How forcible are right words, but what does your argument prove?
26 Do you intend to rebuke my words, or the speech of one that is desperate as wind?
27 Yes, you overwhelm the fatherless, and dig a pit for your friend.
28 Now therefore, be content and look upon me, for it should be evident to you if I lie.
29 Back away, I pray you, and let there be no iniquity; yes, back away, for my righteousness is in it.
30 Is there iniquity in my tongue? Cannot my taste discern perverse things?”

JOB:  CHAPTER 7

JOB:  CHAPTER 7

“Is there not an appointed time for mankind upon the earth? Are not their days also like the days of a hireling?
2 As a servant desires the shade, and as a hireling looks for the reward of their work,
3 so am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearisome nights are appointed me.
4 When I lie down I say, ‘When shall I arise and the night be gone?’ But the night continues, and I am full of tossing to and fro until the dawning of the day.
5 My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dirt, and my skin has waves of boils and is loathsome.
6 My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and are spent without hope.
7 O remember that my life is breath, and my eyes will see good no more.
8 The eyes of those who have seen me will see me no more.   Your eyes will be on me, but I am not!
9 As a cloud is consumed and vanishes, those who go down to hell do not come up.
10 They return no more to their house, nor will their place know them anymore.
11 Therefore I will not refrain from speaking; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
12 Am I the sea, or a serpent, that You set a watch over me?
13 When I say, ‘My bed will comfort me; my couch will ease my complaint,’
14 then You scare me with dreams, and terrify me through visions,
15 so that my soul would choose strangling and death, rather than life.
16 I loathe it; I will not live forever.  Leave me alone, for my days are altogether vain.
17 What is mankind that You magnify them, and that You should set Your heart upon them?
18 And that You visit them every morning, and examine them every moment?
19 How long will You not depart from me, or let me alone until I swallow my spittle?
20 I have sinned, so what shall I do unto You, O Preserver of mankind? Why have You set me as a mark against You, so that I am a burden to myself?
21 And why do You not pardon my transgression, and take away my iniquity? For now I will sleep in the dust, and You will seek me at dawn, but I will not be.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 8

JOB:  CHAPTER 8

Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,
2 “How long will you say these things, and how long will the words of your mouth be like a mighty wind?
3 Does El pervert judgment? Or does the Almighty pervert what is right?
4 If your children have sinned against Him, and He has cast them away for their transgression;
5 if you would seek El in the morning, and make your supplication to the Almighty;
6 if you are pure and upright, surely now He would awake for you, and make the habitation of your righteousness prosper.
7 Though your beginning was small, yet your end will increase greatly.
8 Please inquire of former generations, and prepare yourself for the things discovered by their fathers,
9 for we are only of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days on earth are as a shadow.
10 Will they not teach you and tell you, and utter words out of their heart?
11 Can the rush grow up without a swamp? Can the marshy grass grow without water?
12 While it is yet green and not cut down, it withers before any other grass.
13 So are the paths of all who forget El, for the hypocrite’s hope will perish;
14 whose hope will be cut off, and whose trust is in a spider’s web.
15 They will lean upon their house, but it will not stand; they will hold fast to it, but it will not endure.
16 They are green before the sun, and their branches spread forth over their garden.
17 Their roots are wrapped around a heap, and they seize a house of stones.
18 If they are removed from their place, then it will deny them, saying, ‘I never saw you.’
19 Behold, this is the joy of His way, and out of the earth shall others grow.
20 Behold, El will not cast away the upright, nor will He help the evildoers.
21 Yet, He will fill your mouth with laughing, and your lips with rejoicing.
22 Those who hate you will be clothed with shame, and the tent of the wicked will be no more.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 9

JOB:  CHAPTER 9

Then Job answered and said,
2 “I know this is the truth, but how can anyone be righteous before El?
3 If one were inclined to contend with Him, they could not answer Him once in a thousand times.
4 He is wise in heart and mighty in strength; who has defied Him and prospered?
5 He removes the mountains, and they know not; He overturns them in His anger;
6 He shakes the earth out of its place, and its pillars tremble;
7 He commands the sun, and it rises not, and seals up the stars;
8 He alone spreads out the heavens, and treads upon the waves of the sea;
9 He makes Arcturus, Orion and the Pleiades, and the chambers of the south;
10 He does great things, beyond discovery or knowing, and wonders without number.
11 Lo, if He was to pass by me, I would not see Him; He passes beyond perception.
12 Behold, He takes away, and who can hinder Him? Who can say to Him, ‘What are You doing?’
13 Eloah will not withdraw His anger; the proud helpers stoop under Him.
14 How much less can I answer Him, and choose my words to reason with Him?
15 Who though I were righteous, I could not answer; I would seek the mercy of my judge.
16 If I called and He answered me, I could not believe that He had hearkened unto my voice.
17 For He overwhelms me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds without cause.
18 He will not allow me to get my breath, but fills me with bitterness.
19 If it is a question of power, lo, He is the strong!  And if it is a question of judgment, who can summon Him?
20 If I justify myself, my own mouth will condemn me; if I say I am perfect, He will prove me perverse.
21 Even if I were undefiled, I would not take note of my soul; I would despise my life.
22 It is all one, therefore I say, ‘He destroys the undefiled and the wicked.’
23 If the scourge kills suddenly, He laughs at the trial of the blameless.
24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; He covers the faces of its judges.  If not He, then who is it?
25 Now my days are swifter than a runner; they flee away, they see no good;
26 they pass on as swift ships; as the eagle hastens to the prey.
27 If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself,’
28 I am afraid of all my sorrows; I know that You will not hold me innocent.
29 If I am declared wicked, why then should I labor in vain?
30 If I should wash myself with snow water, and cleanse my hands with soap,
31 yet shall You plunge me into the pit, and my own clothes shall abhor me.
32 For He is not a man as am I, that I may answer Him; that we may come together in judgment.
33 Neither is there a judge between us that might lay his hand upon us both.
34 Let Him remove His rod from me, and let not His dread terrify me.
35 Then I would speak and not fear Him, but it is not so with me.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 10

JOB:  CHAPTER 10

“My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.
2 I will say to Eloah, ‘Do not condemn me; show me why You contend with me.
3 Is it good to You that You should oppress; that you should despise the work of Your hands, and to shine upon the counsel of the wicked?
4 Have You eyes of flesh? Or do You see as humans see?
5 Are Your days as the days of a mortal, or Your years as that of mankind,
6 that You should seek after my iniquity, and search after my sin?
7 You know that I am not wicked, yet there are none that can deliver out of Your hand.
8 Your hands have made me and fashioned me together round about, yet You would destroy me.
9 Remember, please, that You have made me as clay; and will You bring me unto dust again?
10 Have You not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese?
11 You have clothed me with skin and flesh, and fenced me with bones and sinews.
12 You have granted me life and mercy, and Your oversight has preserved my spirit.
13 And these things You have concealed in Your heart.  I know that this is with You:
14 If I sin, then You would mark me, and would not acquit me from my iniquity.
15 If I am wicked, woe to me!  And if I am righteous, I still will not lift up my head.  I am full of shame, therefore see my misery.
16 And it increases:  You hunt me as a fierce lion; and again You show You are too high for me.
17 You renew Your witnesses against me, and increase Your indignation upon me; change and hardship are against me.
18 Why then have You brought me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had perished, and no eye had seen me!
19 I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been carried from the womb to the grave.’
20 Are not my days few? Cease then, and let me alone, that I may have a little comfort
21 before I go.  I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;
22 a land of darkness, as darkness itself, and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.’”

JOB:  CHAPTER 11

JOB:  CHAPTER 11

Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,
2 “Should not the multitude of words be answered? And should a man full of talk be justified?
3 Shall your lies make people silent, and when you mock, shall none reproach?
4 For you have said, ‘My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in your eyes.’
5 But oh, that Eloah might speak, and open His lips against you,
6 and show you the secrets of wisdom; that is double to that which is!  Know therefore, that Eloah is exacting of you less than your iniquity.
7 Can you search out the depths of Eloah? Can you search out the extremes of the Almighty?
8 They are as high as the heavens; what can you do? Deeper than hell; what can you know?
9 The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.
10 If He passes by or shuts up, or calls an assembly, who can restrain Him?
11 For He knows the vanity of mankind, and He sees unrighteousness; will He not consider it?
12 Foolish people would be wise, even though humans are born like a wild ass’s colt.
13 If you would prepare your heart, and spread out your hand unto Him,
14 if iniquity is in your hand, put it far away, and let no wickedness dwell in your tents;
15 then, you may lift up your face without blemish, and you would be steadfast and not fear.
16 For you would forget your misery, and remember it as waters that pass away.
17 Your days would be clearer than noonday; darkness would be as the morning light.
18 And you would be secure, because there is hope, and you would look about and rest in safety.
19 And you would lie down and none would make you fear, and many would suit your favor.
20 But the eyes of the wicked will fail, and they will be not escape; and their hope is to breathe their last.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 12

JOB:  CHAPTER 12

And Job answered and said,
2 “No doubt then you are the people, and wisdom will die with you!
3 But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you.  And who does not know such things as these?
4 I am as one mocked by my friends, who called upon Eloah and He answered him; the just, upright man is a mocked.
5 He whose feet are ready to slip, is as a lamp of contempt for him that is at ease!
6 The tabernacles of oppressors prosper, and those who provoke El are secure; into whose hand Eloah brings abundantly.
7 But ask now the beasts, and let them teach you; and the fowls of the heavens, and they shall tell you;
8 or speak to the earth, and let it teach you; and let the fish of the sea declare to you;
9 who among all these does not know that the hand of YEHOWAH has done this?
10 In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind?
11 Does not the ear test words and the mouth taste His food?
12 With the aged is wisdom, and in length of days understanding.
13 With Him are wisdom and strength; to Him belong counsel and understanding.
14 Behold, He tears down, and it cannot be rebuilt; He shuts up a man, and there can be no loosening.
15 Behold, He withholds the waters, and they dry up; and He sends them out, and they overturn the earth.
16 With Him are strength and wisdom; the deceived and the deceiver are His.
17 He leads counselors away naked, and makes the judges fools.
18 He loosens the bond of kings, and binds their loins with a girdle.
19 He leads princes away naked, and overthrows the mighty.
20 He removes the speech of the steadfast, and takes away the understanding of the aged.
21 He pours contempt upon princes, and slackens the belt of the mighty.
22 He reveals deep things out of darkness, and brings to light the shadow of death.
23 He increases the nations, and destroys them; He enlarges the nations, then guides them.
24 He takes away the heart of the chiefs of the people of the earth, and makes them wander in the wilderness where there is no way.
25 They grope in dark without light, and He makes them stagger like a drunkard.

JOB:  CHAPTER 13

JOB:  CHAPTER 13

Lo, my eye has seen all this; my ear has heard and understood it.
2 What you know, so do I know.  I am not inferior to you.
3 But I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with El.
4 But you forge lies; you are all physicians of no value.
5 O that you would altogether hold your peace, and let that be your wisdom!
6 Hear now my reasoning, and listen to the pleadings of my lips:
7 Will you speak wickedly for El, and talk deceitfully for Him?
8 Will you be partial for Him? Will you contend for El?
9 Will it be well if He searches you out? Or as one soul mocks another, will you mock Him?
10 He will surely reprove you, if you do secretly show partiality.
11 Will not His Excellency frighten you? And will not the dread of Him fall upon you?
12 Your remembrances are like ashes; your bodies are like bodies of clay.
13 Hold your peace and leave me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what may.
14 Why should I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hands?
15 Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him.  But I will maintain my own ways before Him.
16 He also will be my salvation, for a hypocrite shall not come before Him.
17 Hear intelligently my speech and my declaration with your ears.
18 Behold now, I have prepared my cause; I know that I will be justified.
19 Who will contend with me? For now, if I hold my tongue, then I would die.
20 Only do not do two things to me, then I will not hide myself from You:
21 Withdraw Your hand far from me, and let not the dread of You terrify me.
22 Then call, and I will answer; or let me speak, and answer me.
23 How many are my iniquities and sins? Make known to me my transgression and my sin.
24 Why do You hide Your face and regard me as Your enemy?
25 Will You break a leaf driven to and fro? And will You pursue the dry stubble?
26 For You write bitter things against me, and make me possess the iniquities of my youth.
27 You put my feet in the stocks, and look narrowly unto all my paths; You set a print upon the heels of my feet,
28 while I, as a rotten thing, am decaying like a garment that is moth-eaten.

JOB:  CHAPTER 14

JOB:  CHAPTER 14

Humans, who are born of woman, are short-lived and full of trouble.
2 They come forth like a flower, and are cut down; they flee like a shadow, and continue not.
3 And You open Your eyes upon such a one, and bring me into judgment with You?
4 Who can bring forth a clean thing out of an unclean thing?  No one!
5 Since their days are determined, the number of their months is with You, and You have appointed their bounds, which they cannot pass.
6 Turn from them that they may rest, until they fulfill their days like a hireling.
7 For there is hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch of it will not cease.
8 Though its roots grow old in the ground, and its stump dies in the ground,
9 through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.
10 But people die and waste away.  Yes, humans die, and where are they?
11 As water recedes from the sea, and rivers dry up and die,
12 so mankind lies down and rises not.  Until the heavens are no more, they shall not awake nor be aroused out of their sleep.
13 Oh that You would hide me in the grave; that You would hide me until Your wrath turns back; that You would appoint me a set time, and remember me.
14 If a person dies, will they live again? All the days of my appointed time will I wait, until my change comes.
15 You will call, and I will answer You; You will have a desire for the work of Your hands.
16 For now You number my steps.  Do You not watch over my sin.
17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and You sew up my iniquity.
18 And as sure as the falling mountain comes to nothing, and the rock is removed from its place,
19 and water wears away the stones, and its torrents wash away the dust of the earth; so You destroy the hope of humanity.
20 You prevail forever against them, and they depart.  You change their countenance, and send them away.
21 Their children come to honor, and they know it not; and they are brought low, but they perceive it not.
22 But the flesh upon them shall have pain, and the soul within them will mourn.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 15

JOB:  CHAPTER 15

Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
2 “Should a wise man answer with vain knowledge, and fill himself with the east wind?
3 Should he argue with useless words, or with talk that is not profitable?
4 Indeed, you cast off reverence, and diminish prayer unto El,
5 for your mouth utters your iniquity, and you choose the language of the crafty.
6 Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; yes, your own lips testify against you.
7 Are you the first man to be born, or were you formed before the hills?
8 Have you heard the secrets of Eloah, and do you limit wisdom to yourself?
9 What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not in us?
10 With us are both the gray-haired and the aged; men much older than your father.
11 Are the consolations of El small with you, or is there any secret thing with you?
12 Why does your heart carry you away, and what do your eyes wink at,
13 that you turn your spirit against El, and allow such words to go out of your mouth?
14 What is mankind, that they should be pure, or those born of a woman, that they should be righteous?
15 Behold, He puts no trust in His saints, and the heavens are not pure in His sight.
16 How much more abominable and filthy then is humanity, which drinks iniquity like water?
17 I will show you, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare,
18 what wise men have been told from their fathers, and have not hidden,
19 unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them:
20 The wicked writhe with pain all their days, and the number of their years is hidden to the fearful.
21 An alarming sound is in their ears, and in prosperity the destroyer will come upon them.
22 They do not believe that they will return from the darkness, or that the sword awaits them.
23 They wander about for food, saying, ‘Where is it?’ For they know that the day of darkness is at hand.
24 Trouble and anguish terrify them, and they shall prevail against them as a king ready for battle,
25 for they stretch out their hand against El, and think they are strong against the Almighty,
26 and they run against His reproaches, with raised eyebrows as protection.
27 For they have covered their faces with fat, and gathered fat upon their flanks,
28 and they dwell in desolate cities; in houses which none tarry, which are destined to become ruins.
29 They will not become rich, nor will their wealth endure; nor shall they pervert the perfection that has come upon the earth.
30 They will not escape from darkness, for the flame will wither their branches, and by the breath of His mouth they will go away.
31 Let not the deceived trust in vanity, for vanity shall be their compensation.
32 All will be accomplished before their time, and their branch will not be green.
33 And He will shake off their unripe grapes like the vine, and will cast off their flowers like the olive tree,
34 for the assembly of the impious will be desolate, and fire will consume the tabernacle of bribery;
35 for they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and in their gut they prepare deception.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 16

JOB:  CHAPTER 16

Then Job answered and said,
2 “I have heard many such things; miserable comforters are you all.
3 Is there no limit to windy words? Or what irritates you that you answer?
4 I also could speak like you, if my soul were in your soul’s stead; I could heap up words against you, and shake my head at you,
5 but I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips would assuage your grief.
6 Though I speak, my grief is not assuaged, and though I hold back, what am I eased?
7 But now He has made me weary; You have made waste all my company.
8 You have filled me with wrinkles, which are a witness against me, and my leanness rising up against me witnesses to my face.
9 He who hates me tears me in His wrath; He gnashes upon me with His teeth; my enemy sharpens His eyes upon me.
10 They have gaped upon me with their mouth; they have struck me upon the cheek in rebuke; they have gathered themselves together against me.
11 El has delivered me to the unjust, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked.
12 I was at ease, but He shattered me; He has taken me by the neck, and shaken me to pieces, and He has set me up for His mark.
13 His archers encompass me round about; He splits my reins open, and does not spare; He pours out my gall upon the ground.
14 He breaks through me with breach upon breach; He runs upon me like a tyrant.
15 I have sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and defiled my horn in the dust.
16 My face is red with weeping, and the shadow of death is on my eyelids,
17 although there is no violence in my hands, and my prayer is pure.
18 O earth, do not cover my blood, and let my cry have no resting place.
19 Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high.
20 My friends scorn me, but my eyes weep tears unto Eloah.
21 O that one might plead for a man with Eloah, as a person pleads for their neighbor!
22 When a few years are come, then I shall go the way from where I shall not return.

JOB:  CHAPTER 17

JOB:  CHAPTER 17

My breath is offensive; my days are extinct; the grave is ready for me.
2 There are mockers with me, and my eyes endure their provocation.
3 Lay down, now, and enter me into a contract with You; Who is there that will shake hands with me?
4 For You have hidden understanding from their heart, therefore will You not exalt them?
5 Those who speak flattery to their friends, even the eyes of their children shall fail.
6 But He has made me a byword of the people, and I am one at whom they spit.
7 My eye also is dim because of grief, and all my members are as a shadow.
8 The upright will be astonished at this, and the innocent will stir up themselves against the hypocrite.
9 The righteous also will hold to his way, and they who have clean hands shall be stronger and stronger.
10 But as for you all, do you return and come now; for I cannot find a wise man among you?
11 My days are past; my purposes are broken off; even the wishes of my heart.
12 They make night into day.  The light is short because of darkness.
13 If I wait, the grave is my home, and I will make my bed in the darkness.
14 If I call to the grave, ‘You are my father’; to the worm, ‘my mother and my sister’,
15 where then is my hope? And as for that hope, who regards it?
16 They will go down to the bars of the grave, and our rest together will be in the dust.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 18

JOB:  CHAPTER 18

Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said,
2 “How long till you make an end of words? Attend now that we may speak:
3 Why are we regarded as beasts, and reputed as vile in your sight?
4 You tear yourself in your anger; for your sake shall the earth be forsaken? Or shall the rock be moved from its place?
5 Indeed, the light of the wicked will be put out, and the flame of their fire will not shine.
6 The light will be dark in their tabernacle, and their candle will be put out with them.
7 The steps of their strength will be distressed, and their own counsel will cast them down.
8 For they are cast into the net by their own feet, and they walk upon snares.
9 Snares will take them by the heel, and the noose will prevail against them.
10 The snares are laid for them on the ground, and the traps for them are on the path.
11 Terrors shall frighten them on every side, and drive them at every step.
12 Their strength is hungry, and destruction is ready at their side,
13 and it will devour the strength of their skin, and the firstborn of death will devour their strength.
14 Their confidence will be torn out of their dwelling places, and they will be led to the king of terrors,
15 and it will dwell in his tabernacle, because none of it is theirs.  Brimstone will be scattered on their habitation.
16 Their roots will be dried up beneath, and their branch is cut off above.
17 Memory of them will perish from the earth, and they will have no name in the street.
18 They will be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.
19 They will not have son or nephew among the people, nor any remaining of their dwellings.
20 Those that come after them will be astonished at their day, as those that went before were in horror.
21 Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of those who do not know El.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 19

JOB:  CHAPTER 19

Then Job answered and said,
2 “How long will you torment my soul, and crush me with words?
3 These ten times you have insulted me, and you are not ashamed that you have wronged me?
4 And if indeed I have erred, my error remains with me.
5 If indeed you will magnify yourselves against me, and plead against my reproach,
6 know then that Eloah has overthrown me, and has encompassed me with His net.
7 Behold, I cry because of violence, but I am not heard; I cry aloud, but there is no judgment.
8 He has fenced up my way so that I cannot pass, and He has put darkness on my paths.
9 He has stripped my glory, and taken the crown from my head.
10 He has destroyed me on every side, and I am gone, and He has removed my hope like a tree.
11 He has also kindled His wrath against me, and counted me unto Him as an enemy.
12 His troops come together and raise up their way against me, and encamp round about my tabernacle.
13 He has put my brethren far from me, and my acquaintances are truly estranged from me.
14 My kinsfolk have failed, and my known friends have forgotten me.
15 Those who dwell in my house, and my maids, consider me a stranger.  I am a stranger in their sight.
16 I call to my servant, but he does not answer; I implore him with my mouth.
17 My breath is offensive to my wife, even though I entreated for the children’s sake of my own body.
18 Yes, young children despise me; I rise up and they speak against me.
19 All my closest friends abhor me, and those I love have turned against me.
20 My bone clings to my skin and my flesh, and I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth.
21 Have pity upon me!  Have pity upon me, O my friends, for the hand of Eloah has touched me.
22 Why do you persecute me as El, and are not satisfied with my flesh?
23 Oh that my words were written; Oh that they were inscribed in a book;
24 that they were engraved with an iron pen and lead in a rock forever!
25 For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that He will stand at the latter day upon the earth.
26 Even after the worms destroy my skin, yet in my flesh I will see Eloah,
27 Whom I will see for myself, and my eyes will behold, and not another.  My heart faints within me!
28 If you say, ‘Why do we persecute him, seeing as the root of the matter is found in him?’
29 Then be afraid of the sword for yourselves, for wrath brings the punishment of the sword, that you may know there is judgment.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 20

JOB:  CHAPTER 20

Then answered Zophar the Naamathite and said,
2 “Therefore do my thoughts cause me to answer, and for this I make haste.
3 I heard the rebuke of my reproach, and the spirit of my understanding makes me answer.
4 Do you not know this from of old, from the time humans were placed upon the earth,
5 that the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite is for a moment?
6 Though their excellency mounts to the heavens, and their heads reach to the clouds,
7 yet they will perish forever like their dung, and those who have seen them will say, ‘Where are they?’
8 They will fly away like a dream, and will not be found.  Yes, they will be chased away as a vision of the night.
9 The eye that saw them will see them no more, and their place will no more behold them.
10 Their children will seek to please the poor, and their hands will give back their wealth.
11 Their bones are full of the sins of their youth, which will lie down with them in the dust.
12 Though evil is sweet in their mouth, and though they hide it under their tongue,
13 though they spare it and forsake it not, but keep it still within their mouth,
14 yet their food in their stomach is turned to the gall of asps within them.
15 They swallow riches, but will vomit them up again.  El will cast them out of their belly.
16 They suck the poison of asps, and the viper’s tongue will slay them.
17 They will not see the streams, the rivers, the brooks flowing with honey and butter.
18 That which they labor for shall they restore, and shall not swallow it down.  According to their substance shall be the restitution, and they will not rejoice.
19 Because they have oppressed and forsaken the poor, and have seized houses which they have not built,
20 surely they will not know quietness in their belly, and they will not save that which they desire.
21 None of their meat will be left, therefore shall none of them look for their goods.
22 In the fullness of their sufficiency they will be distressed, and every hand of the wicked will be upon them.
23 When they fill their bellies, El will send the fury of His wrath upon them, and shall rain it upon them while they eat.
24 They may flee from the iron weapon, but the bow of brass will strike them through.
25 It is drawn and comes out of their body; even the glittering point from their gall. Terrors are upon them!
26 All darkness is hid in their secret places, and a fire not blown will consume them; it will go ill with those that are left in their tabernacles.
27 The heavens will reveal their iniquity, and the earth will rise up against them.
28 The increase of their house will depart, and their goods will flow away in the day of His wrath.
29 This is the portion of the wicked from Elohim, and the heritage appointed unto them by El.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 21

JOB:  CHAPTER 21

But Job answered and said,
2 “Hear with intelligence my speech, and let this be your consolation.
3 Bear with me that I may speak, then after I have spoken, you may mock.
4 As for me, is my complaint toward man? And if it were so, why should I not be impatient?
5 Look at me, and be astonished, and put your hand over your mouth.
6 Even when I remember I am afraid and trembling takes hold of my flesh.
7 Why do the wicked live, become old; and yes, are mighty in power?
8 Their seed is established with them, and their offspring are before their eyes,
9 Their houses are safe from fear; either is the rod of Eloah upon them.
10 Their bulls mate without fail; their cows calve and do not miscarry.
11 They send forth their little ones like the flock, and their children dance about.
12 They take the tambourine and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ.
13 They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.
14 They say unto El, ‘Depart from us, for we desire not the knowledge of Your ways!
15 What is the Almighty, that we should serve Him, and what profit would we have if we prayed unto Him?’
16 Lo, their goodness is not in their hand, and the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
17 How often is the light of the wicked put out, and how often does their destruction come upon them? Eloah distributes sorrows in His wrath!
18 They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carries away.
19 Eloah lays up iniquity for their children.  He repays them, and they will know it!
20 Their eyes will see their destruction, and they will drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
21 For what pleasure do they have in their house after them, when the number of their months is cut off?
22 Can anyone teach El knowledge, seeing He judges those on high?
23 One dies in the fullness of their strength, being wholly at ease and quiet;
24 with their breasts full of milk, and their bones moistened with marrow,
25 while another dies in the bitterness of their soul, and never eating with pleasure.
26 They will lie down alike in the dust, and the worms will cover them.
27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices that you wrongly imagine against me.
28 For you say, ‘Where is the house of the prince? And where are the dwelling places of the wicked?’
29 Have you not asked those that go by the way, and do you not know their answer,
30 that the wicked are reserved for the day of destruction? They will be led forth to the day of wrath.
31 Who will declare their way to their fact? And who will repay them for what they have done?
32 Yet will they be brought to the grave, and will remain in the tomb..
33 The clods of the valley will be sweet to them, and everyone will follow after them; as they are innumerable before them.
34 How then do you comfort me in vain, seeing in your answers there remains falsehood?”

JOB:  CHAPTER 22

JOB:  CHAPTER 22

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered, and said,
2 “Can a man be profitable unto El, as they that are wise may be profitable unto themselves?
3 Is there any pleasure to the Almighty if you are righteous, or profit to Him if you make your ways perfect?
4 Will He reprove you out of fear, or will He enter into judgment with you?
5 Is not your wickedness great, and your iniquities without end?
6 For you have taken pledges from your brethren without cause, and stripped them naked.
7 You have not given water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry.
8 But the earth belongs to the mighty; yet honorable people dwell in it.
9 You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
10 Therefore snares are round about you, and sudden dread troubles you,
11 or darkness, that you cannot see; and an abundance of water covers you.
12 Is not Eloah in the height of heaven? And behold the height of the stars; how high they are!
13 And you say, ‘What does El know? Can He judge through the darkness?
14 Clouds are a hiding place to Him, so that He cannot see; and He walks in the circuit of heaven.’
15 Have you marked the old way, which the wicked have walked;
16 who were cut down before their time, whose foundations were overflowed with a flood?
17 They said to El, ‘Depart from us!’ And ‘What can the Almighty do to us?’
18 Yet He filled their houses with good things, but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
19 The righteous see it and are glad, and the innocent mock them,
20 saying, ‘Where our substance is not cut down, yet the remnant of them the fire consumes.’
21 Acquaint yourself now with Him, and be at peace.  Thereby good will come to you.
22 Please receive the law from His mouth, and lay up His words in your heart.
23 If you return to the Almighty, you will be built up, but you must put away iniquity far from your tents.
24 Then will you lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.
25 Yes, the Almighty will be your gold, and you will have an abundance of silver,
26 for then you will have your delight in the Almighty, and will lift up your face unto Eloah.
27 You will make your prayer unto Him, and He will hear you, and you will pay your vows.
28 You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you, and the light will shine upon your ways.
29 When mankind is cast down, you will say, ‘Be lifted up’, and He will save the humble person.
30 He will deliver the island of the innocent, and it will be delivered by the pureness of your hands.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 23

JOB:  CHAPTER 23

Then Job answered and said,
2 “Even today my complaint is bitter; my hand is heavy in my groaning.
3 Oh that I knew where I might find Him; that I might even come to His seat!
4 I would order my cause before Him, and fill my mouth with arguments.
5 I would know the words that He would answer me, and understand what He would say to me.
6 Would He plead against me with great power? No, He would consider me.
7 There the upright might reason with Him, and I would be delivered forever from my judge.
8 Behold, I go forward but He is not there, and backward, but I cannot perceive Him;
9 on the left hand, where He works, I cannot behold Him, and He hides Himself on the right hand, that I cannot see Him.
10 But He knows the way I take; when He has tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
11 My foot has held to His path; His ways have I kept, and not declined.
12 Neither have I departed from the command of His lips; I have esteemed the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.
13 But He is of one mind, and who can turn Him? And what His soul desires, even that He does.
14 For He performs what is appointed for me, and many such things are with Him.
15 Therefore, I would tremble in His presence; when I consider, I stand in awe of Him,
16 for El makes my heart soft, and the Almighty amazes me,
17 because I was not cut off before the darkness, nor has He covered the darkness over my face.

JOB:  CHAPTER 24

JOB:  CHAPTER 24

Why, seeing that times are not hidden from the Almighty, do they that know Him not see His days?
2 Some remove the landmarks; they spoil the flocks and eat.
3 They drive away the ass of the fatherless; they take the widow’s ox for a pledge.
4 They push the needy out of the way; the poor of the earth hide themselves altogether.
5 Behold, as wild asses in the desert, they go forth to their work, rising early for the prey. The wilderness yields food for them and for their children.
6 They reap their corn in the field, and they gather the vineyard of the wicked.
7 They cause the naked to lie all night without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold.
8 They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rocks for want of a shelter.
9 They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge from the poor.
10 They cause the poor to go about naked without clothing, and they take away the sheaves from the hungry.
11 They make oil within their walls, treading their wind presses, yet they thirst.
12 People groan from the city, and the souls of the wounded cry out, yet Eloah does not lay folly to them.
13 They are of those who rebel against the light; they know not the ways of it, nor do they abide in its paths.
14 The murderer arises with the light, killing the poor and needy, and the night is as a thief.
15 The eye of the adulterer also waits for the twilight, saying, ‘No eye will see me.’  And they disguise their face.
16 In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime.  They do not know the light,
17 for the morning is to them even as the shadow of death; for they are familiar with the terrors of the shadow of death.
18 They are swift as the waters; their portion is cursed on the earth.  They do not regard the way of the vineyards.
19 Drought and heat consume the snow waters, just as the grave does those who have sinned.
20 The womb will forget them; the worm will feed sweetly upon them; they will be remembered no more, and wickedness will be broken like a tree.
21 They treat the barren women who do not bear with evil, and they do no good for the widow.
22 They drag off the valiant with their power, and they rise up, but none are sure of life.
23 Even though all is given them in safety, upon which they rest, His eyes are still upon their ways.
24 They are exalted for a little while, then they are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way, as are all others, and are cut off as the tops of the ears of corn.
25 And if it is not so, who can prove me a liar, and make my speech worth nothing?”

JOB:  CHAPTER 25

JOB:  CHAPTER 25

Then Bildad the Shuhite answered, saying,
2 “Dominion and fear are with Him.  He makes peace in His high places.
3 Is there any number to His armies? And upon whom does His light not rise?
4 How then can anyone be justified with El? Or how can they be clean who are born of woman?
5 Behold, even the moon shines not; yes, even the stars are not pure in His sight;
6 how much less humanity, that maggot, and the children of men, that worm!”

JOB:  CHAPTER 26

JOB:  CHAPTER 26

But Job answered and said,
2 “How have you helped those who are without power, or saved the arm with no strength?
3 How have you counseled those without wisdom, or how have you abundantly declared something as it is?
4 To whom have you uttered words, and whose soul came from you?
5 The dead writhe under the waters, with their inhabitants.
6 Hell is naked before Him, and Hades has no covering.
7 He stretched out the north over the empty place, and hung the earth on nothing.
8 He binds up the waters in His clouds, and the cloud is not torn under them.
9 He holds back the face of His throne, and spreads His cloud above it.
10 He has encompassed the waters with boundaries, until the day and the night come together.
11 The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at His rebuke.
12 He divided the sea with His power, and by His understanding He strikes through pride.
13 By His Spirit He brightens the heavens; His hands have pierced the fleeing serpent.
14 Lo, these are the fringes of His ways.  And how little is heard of Him? But who can understand the thunder of His power?

JOB:  CHAPTER 27

JOB:  CHAPTER 27

Moreover Job continued his discourse, and said,
2 As El lives, Who has taken away my judgment; and the Almighty, Who has embittered my soul,
3 for while my breath is in me, and The Spirit from Eloah is in my nostrils,
4 my lips will not speak evil, nor will my tongue utter deceit.
5 Far be it that I should justify you; till I die I will not put away my integrity from me.
6 I hold fast my righteousness, and will not let it go.  My heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.
7 Let my enemy be as the wicked, and those that rise up against me as the unrighteous,
8 for what is the hope of the hypocrite, though they have gained, when Eloah removes their soul?
9 Will El hear their cry when distress comes upon them?
10 Will they take delight in the Almighty? Will they call on Eloah at all times?
11 I will teach you by the hand of El; what is with the Almighty I will not conceal.
12 Behold, all of you have seen it, why then are you acting foolishly?
13 This is the portion of the wicked from El, and the inheritance that oppressors receive from the Almighty:
14 Though their children are many, they are destined for the sword, and their seed will not be satisfied with bread.
15 Those that remain of them will be buried in death, and their spouses will not weep.
16 Though they pile up silver like dust, and prepare garments as plentiful as the clay;
17 they may prepare, but the just will wear it, and the innocent will divide the silver.
18 They build their houses as a moth, or like a lair that the watchman has made.
19 The rich will lie down, but they will not be gathered; they open their eyes, and they are no more!
20 Terrors overtake them like a flood; a tempest steals them away in the night.
21 The east wind will carry them away, and they will be gone; like a storm, it will hurl them out of their place.
22 It will come upon them unsparingly, though they will hasten to flee from its power.
23 Grief will overpower them, and scorn will overtake them where they stand.

JOB:  CHAPTER 28

JOB:  CHAPTER 28

Surely there is a vein for silver, and a place where they refine gold.
2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is smeltered out of stone.
3 He sets an end to darkness, and seeks out all perfection; weighing the darkness and the shadow of death.
4 His shafts open far from the fearful, who are oblivious of His comings.  They are dried up; they are removed far from humanity.
5 As for the earth, from it comes food, while underneath it is turned up as fire.
6 The stones of it are the place of sapphires, and it has dust of gold.
7 There is a path that no fowl knows, and which the vulture’s eye has not seen.
8 Proud beasts have not trodden it, nor have the fierce lion passed over it.
9 He puts forth His hand upon the rock, and He overturns the mountains by the roots.
10 He hews out rivers through the rocks, and His eye sees everything precious.
11 He stops the rivers from overflowing, and whatever is hidden, He brings to the light.
12 But where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?
13 Humanity knows not the value of it, nor is it found in the land of the living.
14 The deep says, ‘It is not in me’, and the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’
15 It cannot be purchased with gold, neither can silver be weighed for the price of it.
16 It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with precious onyx, or sapphire.
17 Gold or crystal cannot equal it, nor can it be exchanged for vessels of fine gold.
18 No mention can be made of coral or pearls, for the price of wisdom is even above rubies.
19 The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it, nor can it be valued in pure gold.
20 Where then does wisdom come from? And where is the place of understanding?
21 Seeing as it is hidden from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowl of the air.
22 Hades and death say, ‘With our ears we have heard of it.’
23 Elohim understands the way of it, and He knows its place,
24 for He looks to the ends of the earth, and sees everything under the heavens.
25 When He made the weight of the wind, and meted out the waters by measure,
26 when He made the laws for the rain, and the path for the lightening of the thunder,
27 then He saw it and declared it; He established it and searched it out,
28 and to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of Adonay is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.’”

JOB:  CHAPTER 29

JOB:  CHAPTER 29

Moreover Job continued his parable, and said,
2 “Oh that I were as in months past; as in the days when Eloah preserved me,
3 when His lamp shone upon my head, and when by His light I walked through darkness;
4 as I was in the days of my youth, when the counsel of Eloah was upon my tabernacle;
5 when the Almighty was yet with me, and my children were about me;
6 when my steps were bathed in butter, and the rock poured out for me rivers of oil;
7 when I went out to the gate of the city, and I took my seat in the street;
8 when the young men saw me and hid, and the aged rose up, and stood;
9 the princes stopped talking, and put their hands on their mouths;
10 the nobles held their peace, and their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouth.
11 For when the ear heard, it blessed me, and when the eye saw, it gave witness of me,
12 because I delivered the poor who cried out, and the fatherless, and those who had no help.
13 The blessing of the one ready to perish came upon me, and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.
14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my judgment was like a robe and a diadem.
15 I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame;
16 I was a father to the poor, and I searched out the cause that I did not know.
17 And I broke the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil from their teeth.
18 Then I said, ‘I will die in my nest, and I will multiply my days as the sand.
19 My root is spread out to the waters, and dew lies all night on my branch.
20 My glory is fresh within me, and my bow is renewed in my hand.’
21 Unto me they gave ear, and waited, and kept silent at my counsel.
22 After my words they did not speak again, and my speech dropped on them.
23 And they waited for me as for the rain, and opened their mouth wide, as for the latter rain.
24 If I laughed on them, they believed it not, and the light of my countenance they did not cast down.
25 I chose out their way, and sat as chief, and dwelt as a king in the army; as one who comforts the mourners.

JOB:  CHAPTER 30

JOB:  CHAPTER 30

But now those younger than I scorn me; whose fathers I disdained to put with the dogs of my flock.
2 Yes, what might the strength of their hands profit me, whom old age has broken?
3 Want and hunger are solitary, fleeing into the wilderness at night, desolate and in ruin;
4 who pluck mallows by the bushes, and whose food is the juniper root.
5 They were driven from our midst; they shout against them as against a thief,
6 to dwell in cliffs of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks.
7 Among the bushes they bray; under the nettles they gather together.
8 Children of fools, yes, children of base men, they are more vile than the earth.
9 And now I am their song; yes, I am their byword.
10 They abhor me, and flee far from me, and they refrain not from spitting in my face;
11 because He has loosed my cord and afflicted me, they have also let loose the bridle before me.
12 Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.
13 They mar my path; they set forward my calamity; I have no helper.
14 They come upon me as through a wide breach; in the desolation they rolled themselves upon me.
15 Terrors are turned upon me; they pursue my soul as the wind, and my deliverance has passed away as a cloud.
16 And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.
17 In the night season my bones are pierced within me, and my pains take no rest.
18 By a great force is my garment changed; it binds me about as the collar of my coat.
19 He has cast me into the mire, and I have become like dust and ashes.
20 I cry unto You, but You do not hear me; I stand up, and You regard me not.
21 You have become cruel to me; with Your strong hand You oppose Yourself against me.
22 You lift me up to the wind and cause me to ride, and You dissolve my substance
23 For I know that You will bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.
24 Yet He will not stretch out His hand to the grave, although they cry in His destruction.
25 Did I not weep for those that were in trouble? Was not my soul grieved for the poor?
26 When I looked for good, then evil came; when I waited for light, there came darkness.
27 My bowels boiled, and rested not.  The days of affliction prevented me.
28 I went mourning without the sun; I stood up and cried in the assembly.
29 I am a brother to serpents, and a companion to owls.
30 My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat.
31 My harp also is turned to mourning, and my organ into the voice of those that weep.

JOB:  CHAPTER 31

JOB:  CHAPTER 31

I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I look upon a virgin?
2 And what portion of Eloah is from above, and what inheritance is of the Almighty from on high?
3 Is it not destruction to the wicked, and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?
4 Does He not see my ways, and count all my steps?
5 If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot has hastened to deceit,
6 let me be weighed in an even balance, that Eloah may know my integrity.
7 If my step has turned from the way, and my heart followed my eyes, and if any blot has cleaved to my hands,
8 then let me sow and another eat; yes, let my children be uprooted.
9 If my heart has been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door,
10 then let my wife grind for another, and let others kneel down over her,
11 for this is a heinous crime; yes, it is an iniquity to be punished by judges.
12 For it is a fire that consumes to Hades, and would uproot all my increase.
13 If I have despised the cause of my servants, when they condemned me,
14 what then could I do when El rises up? And when He visits, what will I answer Him?
15 Did not He Who made me in the womb make them? And did not the same One fashion us in the womb?
16 If I have kept the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,
17 or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless orphan has not eaten of it
18 (But from my youth they grew up with me, as with a father, and I have guided them from their mother’s womb);
19 if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;
20 if their loins have not blessed me, and if they were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
21 if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate,
22 then let my shoulder fall from the socket, and my arm be broken in the bone,
23 for calamity from El is a terror to me, and by reason of His highness I could not endure.
24 If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the find gold, “You are my confidence”;
25 if I have rejoiced, because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;
26 if I have beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness,
27 and my heart became secretly enticed, or my mouth has kissed my hand;
28 that also is an iniquity to be punished by the judge, for I would have denied El above.
29 If I rejoiced at the destruction of those that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found them,
30 (Or if I allowed my mouth to sin by wishing a curse on their soul);
31 if those of my tabernacle said not, “Oh that we had of their flesh!” Then we could not be satisfied.
32 The stranger has not lodged outside, for I have opened my doors to the traveler.
33 Have I covered my transgressions like Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom,
34 because I feared the great multitude, or the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silent, and did not go out of doors?
35 Oh, that one would hear me! Behold, my desire is that the Almighty would answer me, and that my adversary had written in a book.
36 Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it to myself as a crown.
37 I would declare unto Him the number of my steps; as a prince I would go near unto Him.
38 If the land cries out against me, or the furrows of it likewise complain;
39 if I have eaten its fruit without money, or have caused the owners of it to lose their lives,
40 let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley.”  The words of Job are ended.

JOB:  CHAPTER 32

JOB:  CHAPTER 32

So the three men ceased answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.
2 Then was kindled the wrath of Elyehu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram.  Against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself before Elohim.
3 Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they found no answer, and had yet condemned Job..
4 Now Elyehu had waited until Job had spoken, because they were his elders.
5 So when Elyehu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of the three men, then his wrath was kindled,
6 and Elyehu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, “I am young, and you are very old, therefore I was afraid and did not tell you my opinion.
7 I said, ‘Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom,’
8 but it is The Spirit in the Person, and the inspiration of the Almighty that gives them understanding.
9 The great are not always wise; neither do the aged understand judgment.’
10 So I say, ‘Hear me, for I too will tell my opinion.’
11 Behold, I waited for your words; I gave ear to your reasons, while you searched out what to say.
12 Yes, I paid close attention to you, and behold, none of you rebuked Job, or answered his words;
13 unless you should say, ‘We have found out wisdom; El thrusts him down, not mankind.’
14 Now he has not arranged his words against me, nor will I reply to him with your speeches.
15 They are dismayed, they answer no more; they stopped speaking.
16 I waited, and they spoke not, but remained still and answered no more.
17 So I said, ‘I too will answer my part; I also will tell my opinion.’
18 For I am full of words; The Spirit within me constrains me.
19 Behold, my belly is like unvented wine, it is ready to burst like new wineskins.
20 I will speak, that I may be refreshed.  I will open my lips and answer.
21 Let me not, I pray, be partial to any person, nor let me give flattering answers to anyone,
22 For I do not know how to flatter, or else my Maker would soon take me away.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 33

JOB:  CHAPTER 33

“Therefore, Job, please hear my speech, and hear all my words.
2 Behold now I open my mouth; my tongue speaks in my mouth.
3 My words shall be the uprightness of my heart, and my lips will speak knowledge with clarity.
4 The Spirit of El has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
5 If you can answer me, set your words in order and take your stand before me.
6 Behold, I come in El’s stead, and I also am formed out of the clay.
7 Behold, my terror shall not make you afraid, nor shall my hand be heavy upon you.
8 Surely you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of your words, saying,
9 ‘I am clean, without transgression; I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me.
10 Behold, He finds occasions against me; He counts me as His enemy;
11 He puts my feet in the stocks; He marks all my paths.’
12 Behold, in this you are not just! I will tell you that Eloah is greater than any mortal.
13 Why do you strive against Him? He does not give an account of any of His doings.
14 El speaks once, or twice, yet no one perceives it.
15 In a dream; a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon mankind, in slumbering in their beds,
16 then He opens the ears of some of them, and seals their instruction,
17 that He may turn some aside from their purpose, and hide pride from them.
18 He keeps back their soul from the pit, and their life from perishing by the sword.
19 They are also chastened with pain upon their beds, and with ever increasing pain among their bones,
20 so that their life abhors bread, and their soul desirable food.
21 Their flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen, and their bones that were not seen, stick out.
22 Yes, their soul draws near to the grave and their life to the destroyer.
23 If there is an angel with them, an interpreter; one among a thousand, to show unto mankind their uprightness,
24 then he is gracious unto them, and says, ‘Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom;
25 let his flesh become fresher than a child’s, and let him return to the days of his youth’.
26 Then he will pray to Eloah, and He will be favorable unto him, that he will see His face with joy, for He will render unto man His righteousness.
27 And he will sing to mankind and say, ‘I have sinned and perverted what is right, and it profited me not;
28 He has delivered my soul from going to the pit, and my life shall see the light.’
29 Lo, El works all these things oftentimes with mankind,
30 to bring back their soul from the pit, that they may be enlightened with the light of life.
31 Mark well, O Job, listen to me; hold your peace, and I will speak.
32 If you have anything to say, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify you.
33 If not, listen to me; hold your peace, and I will teach you wisdom.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 34

JOB:  CHAPTER 34

Furthermore Elyehu answered and said,
2 “Hear my words, you wise men, and give ear unto me, you who know,
3 for the ear tests words, just as the mouth tastes food.
4 Let us discuss judgment, and let us know among ourselves what is good.
5 For Job has said, ‘I am righteous, and El has taken away my judgment.
6 Should I lie against my right? My wound is incurable, yet I am without transgression.’
7 What man is like Job, who drinks up derision like water;
8 who goes in company with the workers of iniquity, and walks with wicked men?
9 For he has said, ‘It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with Elohim.’
10 Therefore, listen to me, you men of understanding:  Far be it from El to do wickedness, and from the Almighty to do unjustly,
11 for He pays according to the work of each person, and makes them find it according to their way.
12 Surely, El will not act wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert justice.
13 Who has given Him authority over the earth? Or who has disposed the whole world?
14 If He set His heart upon mankind, and gathers unto Himself His Spirit and His breath,
15 all flesh would perish altogether, and humanity would return to dust.
16 If you have understanding, hear this; hear the voice of my words.
17 Shall one who hates justice govern? And will you condemn Him that is most just?
18 Shall we say to a king, ‘You are wicked?’ Or to princes, ‘You are guilty?’
19 How much less to Him that regards no person of rank or wealth, more than the poor? For they all are the work of His hands?
20 In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and the mighty shall be taken away without hand,
21 for His eyes are upon the ways of a mankind, and He sees all their steps.
22 There is neither darkness nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves,
23 for He will not lay upon anyone more than is right; that they should enter into judgment with El.
24 He will break in pieces mighty men without number, and set others in their place.
25 Therefore He knows their works, and He overturns them in the night, so that they are destroyed.
26 He strikes them like the wicked in open sight,
27 because they turned back from Him, and would not consider any of His ways;
28 so that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto Him, and He hears the cry of the afflicted.
29 When He gives rest, who can disturb? And when He hides His face, who then can behold Him? And that is in regard to both nation and man,
30 so that the hypocrite reigns not, unless the people be ensnared.
31 For has anyone said unto El, ‘I have borne chastisement; I will not offend anymore;
32 teach me what I do not see, and if I have done iniquity, I will do it no more’?
33 Shall He recompense according to your mind; whether you choose or whether you refuse?  Not I! Therefore declare what you know;
34 let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man hear me.
35 Job has spoken without knowledge, and his words are without wisdom.
36 My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end, because he answers like wicked men.
37 For he adds rebellion to his sin; he claps his hands among us and multiplies his words against El.’”

JOB:  CHAPTER 35

JOB:  CHAPTER 35

Elyehu spoke moreover and said,
2 “Do you think this is right, that you said, ‘My righteousness is more than El’s?
3 For you said, ‘What advantage will it be to You?’ and, ‘What profit will I have, if I be cleansed from my sin?’
4 I will answer you, and your companions with you:
5 Look at the heavens and see; behold the clouds that are higher than you.
6 If you sin, what do you accomplish against Him? And if your transgressions are multiplied, what do you do to Him?
7 If you are righteous, what do you give to Him? Or what does He receive from your hand?
8 Your wickedness may hurt one such as you, and your righteousness may profit the children of man,
9 for it is because of the multitude of oppressions that they cry out; and they cry out because of the arm of the mighty.
10 But no one says, ‘Where is Eloah my Maker, Who gives songs in the night;
11 Who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth, and makes us wiser than the fowls of heaven?’
12 There they cry out, but none gives answer, because of the pride of evil men.
13 Surely El will not hear vanity; neither will the Almighty regard it.
14 Although you say that you will not see Him, judgment is before Him, therefore you must trust Him.
15 But now, because He has not visited in His wrath, he knows not his great degeneracy;
16 therefore Job opens his mouth in vain, and he multiplies words without knowledge.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 36

JOB:  CHAPTER 36

Elyehu proceeded, and said,
2 “Wait for me a little, and I will show you that I have yet more to say on Eloah’s behalf.
3 I will fetch my knowledge from afar, and I will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.
4 For truly my words are not false; He who is perfect in knowledge is with you.
5 Behold, El is mighty, but does not despise any; He is mighty in strength and understanding.
6 He does not preserve the life of the wicked, but gives justice to the poor.
7 He does not withdraw His eyes from the righteous, but with kings on the throne He has seated them forever, and they are exalted.
8 And if they are bound in fetters, and are caught in the cords of affliction,
9 then He shows them their work, and their transgressions, that they have confirmed.
10 He also opens their ear to instruction, and commands that they return from iniquity.
11 If they obey and serve Him, they will end their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.
12 But if they obey not, they will perish by the sword, and they will die without knowledge.
13 But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath; they do not cry when He binds them.
14 They die in youth, and their life is among the unclean.
15 He delivers the poor in their affliction, and opens their ears in oppression.
16 Even so would He have removed you out of the mouth of distress, and placed you in a broad place, with no constraint, and that which should be set on your table was full of fatness.
17 But you have fulfilled the judgment of the wicked; judgment and justice take hold of you.
18 Because there is wrath, beware lest He take you away with His stroke, for then a great ransom cannot deliver you.
19 Will He esteem your riches? No, not gold, nor all the forces of strength.
20 Desire not the night, when people ascend from their place.
21 Take heed, and regard not iniquity, for this have you chosen rather than affliction.
22 Behold, El exalts by His power; who is a teacher like Him?
23 Who has appointed Him His way, and who can say, ‘You have worked iniquity’?
24 Remember that you should exalt His work, which people behold.
25 Everyone may see it, and humanity will see it from afar off.
26 Behold, El is great, and we know Him not; neither can the number of His years be searched.
27 For He makes small the drops of water.  They pour down according to the mist of it,
28 which the clouds do distil and drop abundantly upon mankind.
29 Also, can anyone understand the spreading of the clouds, or the noise of His pavilion?
30 Behold, He spreads His light upon it, and covers the bottom of the sea.
31 For by these He judges peoples; He gives food in abundance.
32 With clouds He covers the light, and commands it to shine between the clouds that come.
33 And the noise of it shows His presence; the cattle also, concerning what is to come.

JOB:  CHAPTER 37

JOB:  CHAPTER 37

At this also my heart trembles, and is moved out of its place.
2 Listen closely to the thunder of His voice, and the sound that goes out from His mouth.
3 He directs it under the whole heaven, and His lightning unto the ends of the earth.
4 After it, a voice roars; He thunders with the voice of His Excellency, and He will not restrain them when His voice is heard.
5 El thunders with His voice marvelously; doing great things which we cannot comprehend.
6 For He says to the snow, ‘Fall upon the earth;’ likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of His strength.
7 He seals the hand of all mankind, that everyone may know His work.
8 Then the beast go into dens, and remain in their places.
9 Out of the south comes the whirlwind, and cold out of the north.
10 By the breath of El frost is given, and the breadth of the waters is straightened.
11 Also by watering He overburdens the thick cloud; He scatters the lightening of His clouds.
12 And it is turned round about by His guidance, that they may do whatsoever He commands them upon the face of the inhabited world.
13 He causes it to come, whether for correction, of for His land, or for His mercy.
14 Hear this, O Job, be still, and consider the wondrous works of El.
15 Do you know how Eloah places them, and makes the lightning of His cloud to shine?
16 Do you know the balancing of the clouds, or the wondrous works of Him Who is perfect in knowledge?
17 How are your garments warmed, when He quiets the earth with the south wind?
18 Have you, with Him, spread out the sky, which is strong and as a molten mirror?
19 Teach us what we shall say to Him, for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness.
20 Shall it be told Him that I speak? If anyone speaks, surely they will be swallowed up.
21 But now mankind does not see the bright light, which is in the clouds, because the wind passes and cleans them.
22 Fair weather comes from the north.  With Eloah comes awesome majesty.
23 The Almighty, we cannot find Him out; He is excellent in power, and in judgment.  And in an abundance of justice, He will not harm.
24 Therefore mankind fears Him.  He regards not any who are wise of heart.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 38

JOB:  CHAPTER 38

Then YEHOWAH answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,
2 “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Now gird up your loins like a man, for I will inquire of you, and you answer Me!
4 Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare it, if you have understanding.
5 Who has laid the measurements of it, if you know? Or who stretched the line upon it?
6 Upon what are the foundations of it fastened? Or who laid the cornerstone of it,
7 when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of Elohim shouted for joy?
8 Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, as if it has issued out of the womb,
9 when I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band,
10 and broke up for it My decreed places, and set bars and doors,
11 and said, ‘Here shall you come, but no further; and here shall your proud waves stay’?
12 Have you commanded the morning in your life; or caused the dawn to know its place,
13 that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and the wicked might be shaken out of it?
14 It is turned like clay to the seal, and they stand as a garment.
15 And from the wicked their light is withheld, and the uplifted arm is broken.
16 Have you entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the examination of the deep?
17 Have the gates of death been opened to you, or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death?
18 Have you understood the breadth of the earth? Declare if you know all this.
19 Where is the way to the dwelling of light? And darkness, where is the place of it,
20 that you may take it to its boundary, and that you may know the path to its house?
21 You know, because you were born then, and the number of your days is great.
22 Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,
23 which I have reserved for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war?
24 By what way is the light parted, which scatters the east wind upon the earth?
25 Who has divided a channel for the deluge, or a way for the lightening of thunder
26 to cause it to rain upon the earth, where there is no human; on the desert wherein mankind is not,
27 to satisfy the desolate and waste ground, and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
28 Has the rain a father? Or who has begotten the drops of dew?
29 Out of whose womb has come the ice? And who has begotten the frost of heaven?
30 The waters are hidden as in a stone, and the surface of the deep is frozen.
31 Can you bind the influence of Pleiades, or loose the cords of Orion?
32 Can you bring forth Mazzaroth in its season, or can you guide the Great Bear with its children?
33 Do you know the ordinances of heaven? Or can you set the dominion of it over the earth?
34 Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, so that an abundance of water will cover you?
35 Can you send lightning that they may go, and say to you, ‘Here we are’?
36 Who has put wisdom in the innermost thoughts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?
37 Who can number the clouds in wisdom? Or who can stay the pitchers of heaven,
38 when the dust grows hard, and the clods stick together?
39 Can you hunt the prey for the lion, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions
40 when they crouch in their dens, and lie in the lair in wait?
41 Who provides food for the raven when its young cry to El, and wander about for lack of food?

JOB:  CHAPTER 39

JOB:  CHAPTER 39

Do you know the time when the wild goats of the rock give birth? Or can you mark when the deer calve?
2 Can you number the months they fulfill, or do you know the time they give birth?
3 They bow themselves down; they bring forth their young, and they put away their pain.
4 Their young ones become plump, they grow with grain; they go forth, and return not unto them.
5 Who has sent out the wild ass free? Or who loosed the bonds of the wild ass,
6 whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land its dwellings?
7 It scorns the tumult of the city; neither regards it the crying of the driver.
8 The range of the mountains is its pasture, and it searches after every green thing.
9 Will the wild bull willingly serve you, or abide by your crib?
10 Can you bind the wild bull in a furrow with ropes, or will it harrow the valleys after you?
11 Will you trust it because its strength is great? Or will you leave your labor to it?
12 Will you have faith in it, that it will return your grain, and gather the grain into your barn?
13 The joyous wings of the ostrich flap, along with its feathers and plumage,
14 while she leaves her eggs in the earth, and warms them in the dust.
15 She forgets that a foot may crush them, or that a wild beast may break them;
16 she is hardened against her young, as though they were not hers.  Her labor is in vain; without concern,
17 because Eloah has deprived her of wisdom, neither has He imparted to her understanding.
18 When she lifts herself on high, she scorns the horse and its rider.
19 Have you given the horse its strength? Have you clothed its neck with a quivering mane?
20 Do you make it leap like the grasshopper? Its majestic snort is terrible!
21 It paws in the valley, and rejoices in its strength; it goes out to meet the armed warriors;
22 it mocks fear and is not dismayed, and it does not turn back from the sword.
23 The quiver rattles against it, along with the glittering spear and shield.
24 It races over the ground with fierceness and rage, stopping not at the sound of the trumpet.
25 It says among the trumpet blasts, ‘Aha’, as it smells the battle afar off, with the thunder of the captains, and the clamor.
26 Does the hawk fly by your wisdom, and stretch its wings toward the south?
27 Does the eagle mount up at your command, and make its nest on high?
28 It dwells and abides on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, a strong place.
29 From there it seeks the prey, and its eyes behold afar off.
30 And its young ones also suck up blood, and where the slain are, there is it.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 40

JOB:  CHAPTER 40

Moreover YEHOWAH answered Job and said,
2 “Shall the one that contends with the Almighty instruct Him? Let the one that reproves Eloah answer it?”
3 Then Job answered YEHOWAH and said,
4 “Behold, I am vile.  What shall I answer You? I will lay my hand upon my mouth.
5 Once have I spoken, but I will not answer You twice; I will proceed no further.”
6 Then YEHOWAH answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,
7 “Gird up your loins now like a man; I will inquire of you, and you advise Me.
8 Will you even disannul My judgment? Will you condemn Me, that you may be righteous?
9 Have you an arm like El? Or can you thunder with a voice like Him?
10 Deck yourself now with majesty and excellency, and array yourself with glory and beauty.
11 Cast abroad the rage of your wrath, and behold everyone that is proud, and abase them.
12 Look on everyone who is proud, and humble them, and tread down the wicked in their place.
13 Hide them in the dust together, and bind their faces in secret.
14 Then I will also confess to you that your own right hand can save you.
15 Behold now, behemoth, which I made as well as you; it eats grass like a bull.
16 Behold now, the strength in its loins, and the power in the cords of its belly.
17 It moves its tail like a cedar, and the sinews of his stones are knit together.
18 Its bones are as strong pieces of brass; its ribs are like bars of iron.
19 This is the first of the ways of El, and He that made it can make His sword approach it.
20 Surely the mountains bring it forth food, where all the beasts of the field play.
21 It lies under the shade trees, in the cover of the reeds and the swamp.
22 The shade trees cover it with their shadow; the willows of the brook encompass it round about.
23 Behold, it drinks up a river and hastens not.  It trusts that it can draw up the Jordan into its mouth.
24 It observes with its eyes; and its nose pierces through snares.

JOB:  CHAPTER 41

JOB:  CHAPTER 41

Can you draw out leviathan with a fishhook, or its tongue with a cord that you let down?
2 Can you put a rope into its nose, or bore into its jaw with a thorn?
3 Will it make many supplications to you, or will it speak soft words to you?
4 Will it make a covenant with you, and will you take it for a servant forever?
5 Will you play with it as with a bird, or will you bind it for your maidens?
6 Will your companions make a banquet of it? Will they divide it among the merchants?
7 Can you fill its skin with barbed irons, or its head with fishing spears?
8 Lay your hand on it; remember the battle, do no more!
9 Behold, the hope of it is in vain; shall not one be cast down even at the sight of it?
10 No one is so fierce that they dare to arouse it.  Who then is able to stand before Me?
11 Who has given to Me that I should repay them? Whatsoever is under the whole heaven is Mine.
12 I will not keep silence concerning its parts, or its power, or its beautiful proportions.
13 Who can uncover its outer garment? Who can come within its double jaw?
14 Who can open the jaws of its face? Its teeth are a terror round about;
15 its scales are its pride, shut up as with a tight seal.
16 One is so near to another that no air can come between them.
17 They are joined one to another; they stick together, so that they cannot be separated.
18 By sneezing it brings forth light, and its eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.
19 Out of its mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap forth.
20 Out of its nostrils smoke goes forth, as from a seething pot or caldron.
21 Its breath kindles coals, and a flame goes forth from its mouth.
22 In its neck lodges strength, and sorrow leaps before it.
23 The flaps of its flesh are joined together; they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved.
24 Its heart is as firm as a stone, even as hard as a piece of lower millstone.
25 When it raises itself up, the mighty fear; because of affliction they purify themselves.
26 The sword of those that take hold of it cannot succeed; nor the dart, nor the harpoon.
27 It regards iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood.
28 The arrow cannot make it flee; slung stones are turned into stubble by it.
29 Clubs are regarded as stubble; it laughs at the shaking of the spears.
30 Sharp stones are its underbelly, and it makes its bed from a threshing sledge upon the mire.
31 It makes the deep boil like a pot, and makes the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 It makes a path to shine behind it; one would think the deep to be gray-haired.
33 Upon earth there is nothing like it; one made without fear.
34 It looks upon all things high, and is a king over all the children of pride.”

JOB:  CHAPTER 42

JOB:  CHAPTER 42

Then Job answered YEHOWAH and said,
2 “I know that You can do all things, and that no thought can be withheld from You.
3 Who is there that can hide counsel without knowledge? Therefore I have declared that which I did not understand; things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.
4 Hear, please, and I will speak; I will inquire of You, and You instruct me.
5 I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You!
6 Therefore I melt away, and repent in dust and ashes.”
7 And it was so that after YEHOWAH had spoken these words to Job that YEHOWAH said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is kindled against you and against your two friends, because you have not spoken of Me what is right, as has My servant Job.
8 Therefore, take for yourselves seven bulls and seven rams, and go to My servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering, and My servant Job will pray for you.  For I will accept him, lest I deal with you according to your folly; in that you have not spoken of Me that which is right, like My servant Job.”
9 So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as YEHOWAH commanded them, and YEHOWAH accepted Job.
10 And YEHOWAH restored the prosperity of Job when he prayed for his friends.  And YEHOWAH gave Job twice as much as he had before.
11 Then came all his brothers, and all his sisters, and all that had been of his acquaintance before, and they ate bread with him in his house, and they consoled him, and comforted him, over all the evil that YEHOWAH had brought upon him.  Each one also gave him a piece of money, and each one a ring of gold.
12 And YEHOWAH blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning, and he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and one thousand yoke of oxen, and one thousand female asses.
13 He also had seven sons and three daughters.
14 And he called the name of the first, Jemimah; and the second Keziah, and the third Keren-happuch.
15 And in all the land were no women found as fair as the daughters of Job, and their father gave them inheritance among their brothers.
16 After this lived Job one hundred forty years, and he saw his children, and his children’s children; even unto four generations.
17 And Job died, old and full of days.
